U.S. smartphone market sees sluggish growth as India-made phones surge: Report

The Hindu10 hours ago
The United States smartphone market grew just 1% in the second quarter as vendors front-loaded device inventories amid tariff concerns, while supply chain negotiations between China and the United States boosted shipments of Indian-made phones, research firm Canalys said on Monday.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
The imposition of U.S. tariffs has prompted smartphone makers to reorganize their supply chains to avoid higher import costs and protect their margins.
China, a major hub for electronics manufacturing, has been targeted by significant tariffs, pushing hardware makers to explore other Asian countries to maintain low production costs.
CONTEXT
In response to tariffs, Apple earlier this year sought to make most of its iPhones sold in the United States at factories in India.
However, the move drew criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened additional tariffs on the Cupertino-based company if it did not produce domestically.
KEY QUOTES
"India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple's accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China," said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Canalys.
"The market only grew 1% despite vendors front-loading inventory, indicating tepid demand in an increasingly pressured economic environment and a widening gap between sell-in and sell-through," said Runar Bjorhovde, Senior Analyst at Canalys.
BY THE NUMBERS
The share of U.S. smartphone shipments assembled in China fell from 61% in the second quarter of 2024 to 25% in the second quarter of 2025.
India picked up most of the decline, with Indian-made smartphone volume growing 240% year-on-year.
iPhone shipments declined by 11% while Samsung shipments grew 38% in the second quarter.

Decathlon targets India sourcing worth $3 billion by 2030

Decathlon, a French sports retailer brand, on Tuesday (July 29, 2025), said it has a strategic target to scale its local sourcing from India to $3 billion by 2030. Currently, India accounts for 8% of Decathlon's global sourcing quantities, with a goal to scale this to 15% by 2030, according to the company. This growth would be driven by a focused push in high-potential categories such as footwear, fitness equipment, and technical textiles — designed to meet the evolving demands of both Indian consumers and global markets, said Decathlon whose operations turned 25 years in India. Addressing a media conference, Sankar Chatterjee, chief executive officer, Decathlon India, said, over the last 25 years, Decathlon's production journey in India has been the backbone of the brand's success in the country. Over 70% of the quantities sold by Decathlon in India in 2025 will be made in India. This figure is expected to rise to 90% by 2030, reinforcing the brand's focus on its local sourcing strategy. The brand's local production ecosystem includes a Design Centre, which is supported by 113 manufacturing sites, 83 suppliers, and 7 production offices across India. 'Today, we're able to offer a diverse and growing portfolio of categories, made in India that meet the evolving needs of Indian sport users,'' he said, adding, as the brand continued to strengthen its footprint across offline and omni-channel platforms, production excellence remained at the heart of Decathlon's strategy. As part of its growth journey, Decathlon was working to create more than 3,00,000 new direct and indirect jobs in the country across its production ecosystem. The brand would also deepen its focus on culturally rooted sports like yoga and cricket, with the latter entirely conceptualised and manufactured in India. Decathlon currently operates 132 stores across 55 cities in India and it plans to expand its retail footprint to over 90 cities by 2030.

Three held in ₹44 lakh cyber fraud case

Three persons were arrested by the cyber crime wing of the Hyderabad police for defrauding a city-based person of over ₹44 lakh by posing as trading advisors from a fictitious firm named 'Aveshta Study Group-W'. The accused were identified as Milind Manohar Narkar, 34, a private employee from Santacruz, Mumbai; Ranak Jagadish Patel, 31, a businessman from Bhiwandi, Thane; and Salik Imtiyaz Ahmed Siddiqui, 25, a private employee from Mumbra, Thane. All three were working in tandem with a cyber fraudster operating out of Dubai. According to investigators, the trio contacted the victim in June 2025 on phone, claiming to be professional trading advisors offering high return investment opportunities. Lured by the promise of substantial profits, the victim was persuaded to transfer funds into several bank accounts controlled by the accused. When the victim later attempted to withdraw the 'profits', he was asked to first pay a 20% 'service charge' on the returns. Believing the promise that both the profits and the original investment would be returned following this payment, the victim complied. In total, he was cheated of ₹44,04,753. During the investigation, it emerged that Milind Narkar was actively assisting the Dubai-based kingpin by converting fraudulently acquired funds into cryptocurrency. He also played a key role in sourcing and operating mule accounts, and was found to be accommodating account holders at various hotels in Mumbai. His network extended across seven other States in India where he allegedly facilitated the conversion of illicit gains into digital currency. The Hyderabad police seized three mobile phones from the accused. All three are believed to be working on commission for the overseas fraudster, by providing access to and managing local bank accounts used in the scam. Following the case, the Hyderabad police issued a public advisory warning citizens to be wary of suspicious investment schemes promising unusually high returns. Authorities have noted that scammers often pose as representatives of well-known firms and use forged documents, including fake SEBI certifications, to build credibility. Such fraudsters commonly advertise via platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and often share fake profit screenshots to gain victims' trust. Citizens have been urged to verify investment schemes thoroughly before parting with their money and to avoid making hasty financial decisions based on promises of quick returns. Victims of cyber fraud are advised to immediately dial 1930 or visit: for assistance.
