Moscow warns of 'titanic efforts' to disrupt Putin-Trump meeting

MOSCOW: Certain countries will make 'titanic efforts' to disrupt the meeting U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin for August 15, Russia's investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev said on Saturday. Trump had said earlier that Russia and Ukraine were close to a ceasefire deal that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year conflict. The contents of the deal have yet to be announced, but it could require Ukraine to surrender significant territory - an outcome many European nations oppose. Dmitriev accused unnamed countries of seeking to prolong the war. 'Undoubtedly, a number of countries interested in continuing the conflict will make titanic efforts to disrupt the planned meeting between President Putin and President Trump,' he said in a post in his Telegram account, specifying that by efforts he meant 'provocations and disinformation'. Dmitriev did not specify which countries he was referring to or what kind of 'provocations' they might undertake. The Kremlin earlier confirmed the summit. The two leaders will 'focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis,' Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said, adding: 'This will evidently be a challenging process, but we will engage in it actively and energetically.' - REUTERS

Published on: Saturday, August 09, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 09, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Masidi operating an excavator during the Kunak New Township groundbreaking ceremony. KUNAK: The development of the Kunak New Township is set to drive local economic transformation and reshape the district's industrial landscape, said Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Masidi said the multi-phase project, estimated to take five to 15 years to complete, reflects strong investor confidence and aligns with the State's Sabah Maju Jaya strategic plan. The development comprises three key components: commercial, residential and light industrial zones. Advertisement 'I'm confident this new township will become a nucleus for economic activity in Kunak and create more opportunities for the district to move forward, like other new towns in Sabah,' he told reporters. Located near the Pan Borneo Highway and Jalan Kunak Spur, the township is also expected to enhance tourism and support local products, potentially reaching markets beyond the district. Masidi noted the strong commitment from local leaders and urged all agencies and stakeholders to play their part in realising the vision for Kunak as a strategic growth hub. He also commended the area's natural beauty, highlighting his visit to the increasingly popular Tasik Impian, surrounded by virgin forest in Mostyn. Advertisement Amazing Synergy Realty Sdn Bhd Director, Chia Seong Pow, said the 107-acre development will offer a holistic township concept with zones for transit and commerce including shop lots, a hypermarket, hotel, cinema, modern bus terminal and petrol station. The residential area will include 288 terrace homes in two phases and 83 residential lots with community facilities, while 37 industrial lots will cater to light and medium industries, fostering local employment and entrepreneurship. Also present were Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif, Kunak District Officer Majaran Osman and District Council CEO Mohd Nazri Pintal. 'This is a golden opportunity. Kunak sits strategically between Tawau, Semporna and Lahad Datu – making it ideal for long-term development,' Masidi added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM122 million Sandakan jetty 80pc ready

Published on: Saturday, August 09, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 09, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Ahmad Maslan (left) inspecting jetty construction at Mawilla 2. SANDAKAN: The Federal Works Ministry (KKR) continues to strengthen its role in supporting national defence, particularly in the eastern region of Sabah, through the construction of the Mawilla 2 Jetty Project, which has now reached 80 per cent physical completion. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan conducted a working visit to the project site on Monday to personally inspect the progress of the jetty construction, which involves a total cost of RM122.99 million. Advertisement The project is being implemented using the Design and Build method and is expected to be completed by December this year. 'The scope of the project includes the construction of two concrete jetties measuring 300 metres and 75 metres, respectively, two concrete pontoons, a Bosun house, a Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) building, as well as basic amenities such as toilets and water tanks, all built in accordance with current standards. 'Kekal Mewah Sdn Bhd has been appointed as the main contractor, while the project is being managed by the Special Project Team 2 (PPK2) of the Public Works Department (JKR) as the monitoring agency,' he said at a press conference here. For the record, the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Sandakan, which has been operational since 1994, is now known as the Eastern Fleet Command Headquarters 2 (Mawilla 2), serving as the operational base for 964 RMN officers and personnel. Advertisement It also houses various types of operational and defence vessels. The construction of the new jetty aims to provide berthing facilities equipped with electricity supply, fuel, clean water and telecommunications systems, in addition to ensuring a higher level of security for RMN ships and foreign military vessels docking there. In line with the aspirations of the Madani Government, the Ministry hopes this facility will be fully utilised by RMN personnel in their mission to defend the sovereignty and security of the nation. Ahmad also called on JKR and the main contractor to continue working closely together to ensure that the project is completed on time, maintaining the planned quality and cost. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
