Here's why James Hagens is declining in the NHL Draft as Matthew Schaefer moves up

What was once the clear top prospect of the 2025 NHL Draft, James Hagens' stock has dropped—and the New York Islanders are faced with a franchise-altering decision. Following an MVP performance at the 2024 U18 World Championship and a prohibitive USHL season, he was a strong favorite to be taken No.
1 overall. Then why is he no longer at the top of most draft boards?
Concerns about James Hagens' NHL game change

For all his bloodlines and offensive skill, NHL scouts have started to wonder how James Hagens' game will translate to the next level. He's a bit undersized at barely 5-foot-11 and lacks a physical component. Scouts have noted stretches of his NCAA season where he vanished in even-strength play, failing to get inside versus more physical defenders and landing with a less-than-expected goal total.
James Hagens, born-and-raised Long Islander and lifelong Isles supporter, would be the sentimental choice. Comparisons to Tavares are unavoidable. But sentiment won't win playoff series — and currently, scouts overwhelmingly think defenseman Matthew Schaefer is the best player in the class.
Matthew Schaefer, a 6-foot-2 blueliner with exceptional skating and excellent two-way skills, is considered a potential top-pairing NHL blueliner of the future.

Even in struggling with injuries this year, he dictated games on the back end with a physicality and composure Hagens has not yet matched.
'Schaefer is the only truly special player in this draft,' a scout told The Athletic. 'Other than maybe Misa, Schaefer is in a tier of his own.'
The Islanders seem not to be in rebuild mode or fighting for survival anymore. With a new arena, playoff seasoning, and sound ownership, they can't miss on a franchise defenseman like Schaefer.
'They'd be going way off the board in the eyes of most teams if they took Hagens,' said one NHL scout.

The bottom line
James Hagens is still one of the best-scoring players in this class. But for a top-six team drafting first overall — especially one that has true playoff hopes — the selection has to be made with an eye toward constructing a championship core. That choice, according to almost everyone in scouting, is Matthew Schaefer.

Virat Kohli's No. 18 Jersey Set To Be 'Retired' As No Player Wants 'Burden'
Last Updated: Virat Kohli's number 18 jersey is set to be 'unofficially retired' from Indian cricket because no new player is likely to take the 'burden' of his legacy number. News18 Hours after pacer Mukesh Kumar's wearing of a Number-18 kit for India 'A' against England Lions caused an uproar on social media, a new report has claimed that no player is likely to take up the number — immortalised by the recently retired Virat Kohli — in Tests 'in the near future'. According to news agency PTI, Mukesh has not officially taken up the number and just wore it for the unofficial Test, while if he's called up to the senior squad that'll play five Tests against England, his jersey number will be 49 — the one he has been wearing since his debut. The report added that just like Sachin Tendulkar's jersey No. 10 and MS Dhoni's No. 7, 'it was unlikely' that any player would be open to taking the 'burden' of the legacy number. 'Mukesh wore No. 18 during the opening 'Test' match versus Lions. But when it comes to India A squad, there are no fixed numbers as jerseys don't have names. Anyone can pick any random number. The jersey numbers are only sacrosanct for international games," the news agency quoted a senior BCCI official as saying. The report claimed that the two new members of the squad, B Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, will also not wear the number 18 jersey. In Indian cricket, there is no official tradition for retiring specific jersey numbers, nor is there any such rule mentioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC). But both Tendulkar and Dhoni's numbers haven't been worn since their retirements, except for one instance when Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur wore the 10 and was abused, forced to change it again. Kohli announced his Test retirement on May 12 via an Instagram post, saying that although the decision was difficult, he felt the time was right to call of the 14-year-long journey. India's five-Test series against England will be the first since then and several options — new captain Shubman Gill, debutant-call-up Sai Sudharsan and returnee Karun Nair have been touted as options to take his number four position. In the India 'A' game, where Gill and Sudharsan didn't play, Nair scored a double ton to strengthen his chances while Mukesh picked up three wickets. First Published: June 02, 2025, 21:23 IST

Virat Kohli to play BBL? Cricket Australia CEO opens up on possibilities
Virat Kohli doesn't play in overseas T20 leagues. While several Indian women cricketers - including Jemimah Rodrigues, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Shikha Pandey, and Harmanpreet Kaur - have featured in the Women's BBL, their male counterparts have been absent due to restrictions imposed by the BCCI. Under current rules, Indian male cricketers are prohibited from playing in overseas T20 leagues unless they have retired from all forms of Indian cricket. Greenberg believes that the inclusion of high-profile players like Kohli would significantly boost both attendance and viewership ratings for the BBL. Also Read: Virat Kohli to play in BBL? Sydney Sixers make big announcement on April 1 'We would love to welcome some Indian players to the BBL. That would be fantastic. That's certainly some conversations that we will continue to have with the BCCI. I mean, I would love to see, Virat Kohli playing in the BBL this year. That would certainly create some interest in crowds and ratings, I'm sure. But at the moment, that's not happening, but we do have our ambitions to do those types of things,' Greenberg said in a virtual media interaction by Cricket Australia. Greenberg also highlighted the growing influence of Indian companies in global cricket, noting their acquisition of teams in The Hundred - specifically the Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles, and Manchester Originals. 'As you're seeing all over the world, T20 leagues are going down a lot of the private investment, opportunities. We're seeing that in England recently with the Hundred. A number of the IPL franchises are now taking ownership stakes in the Hundred. So we've got to again, it goes to the same message I've been talking about. We've got to continue to evolve and innovate the way we run our business here in Australia and making sure that we have an open mind to new things,' Greenberg added. Representing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohli is currently set to play in the IPL 2025 final on Tuesday, June 3 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Priyansh to Sudharsan: Top five finds in Indian Premier League 2025
The 73-day-long journey of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will come to an end today, with one of the two finalists—Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) or Punjab Kings (PBKS)—walking away with their maiden IPL trophy. While the 18th edition of India's franchise-based cricket league is all set to create history in terms of team success, this edition of the event also saw multiple young stars rising to fame with their extraordinary cricketing skills and consistent display of form, earning them the title of IPL 2025 break-out stars. From Sai Sudharsan's orthodox cricket to Ayush Mhatre's aggressive approach, to Vaibhav's record-breaking debut season at just 14 years of age, IPL 2025 has witnessed it all. So before we finally find out which team will lift their maiden IPL trophy today, let's take a look at some breakout stars of the season who proved that the future of cricket is in safe hands. Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans) Sai Sudharsan has been a sensational performer for Gujarat Titans this IPL and is all but set to win the Orange Cap this season. Over 15 matches, he has amassed 759 runs at a commanding average of 54.21. His highest score is an unbeaten 108, reflecting his ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when needed. Sai's strike rate of 156.17 shows he balances patience with aggression effectively. His tally includes 88 fours and 21 sixes, showing his capability to find the boundary consistently. Although Sai has been part of GT for a couple of seasons before this reason, IPL 2025 is the true season where he proved his capabilities to the full extent. Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals) Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history with his debut at just 14 years of age, making him the youngest player to play in the IPL. On top of that, he also scored a 35-ball century this season vs GT, which is the second-fastest overall and the fastest by an Indian batter in tournament history. In terms of numbers, he played 7 matches this season and amassed 252 runs at a solid average of 36.00. His highest score is 101. Vaibhav's strike rate stands at an impressive 206.55, underlining his aggressive batting style. Ayush Mhatre (Chennai Super Kings) Ayush Mhatre was a mid-season signing by CSK as a replacement for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, but he made a strong impression and was a bright spark for Chennai Super Kings in the limited appearances he made. He played 7 matches and accumulated 240 runs. He has maintained a healthy batting average of 34.29 and a strike rate of 188.97, reflecting his ability to score quickly. Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings) Priyansh Arya has emerged as a key player for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. Over 16 matches, he has scored 451 runs, averaging 28.19. His highest score of 103 demonstrates his capacity to play long innings. With a strike rate of 183.33, Priyansh has been effective in maintaining a brisk scoring rate. He also has a knack for finding the boundary, smashing 51 fours and 25 sixes, contributing heavily to PBKS's batting strength throughout the season. He, along with his opening partner Prabhsimran Singh, played a big role in securing a final spot for PBKS for the first time in 11 seasons. Vipraj Nigam (Delhi Capitals) Vipraj Nigam has been an intriguing all-round option for Delhi Capitals. Although Delhi failed to qualify for the playoffs, Vipraj's name will still be considered in the list of one of the best players of IPL 2025. He played 14 matches, bowled 39 overs and picked up 18 wickets with best bowling figures of 2/18. His economy rate of 9.12 complements his bowling strike rate of 21.27, showcasing his efficiency in restricting runs and taking timely wickets. With the bat, Vipraj has scored 142 runs at an average of 20.29, hitting 15 fours and 8 sixes, highlighting his ability to contribute crucial lower-order runs.
