Time of India7 days ago
Pune: A 20-year-old BBA student's attempt to steal petrol from a motorcycle and use a lighter to check the fuel he had spilled in the process triggered a fire at the entrance of a commercial building in Wadgaon Sheri, putting the lives of at least 200 people at risk and damaging six two-wheelers.
The Pune fire brigade rescued the people from Shrushti complex around 1am on Monday. No one was injured, Chandannagar police said. There was a religious function on the third floor of the building. Around 200 people were asleep on the third floor when the fire broke out.
Later on Monday, the Chandannagar police arrested the student, a resident of Sanjay Park in Vimannagar, for setting the two-wheelers on fire.

"The student had gone to Wadgaon Sheri to meet a friend on his scooter.
While returning home, his scooter ran out of fuel. He halted near the commercial building around 12.30am and saw two-wheelers parked at the entrance of the building," said senior inspector Seema Dhakane of the Chandannagar police.
"He decided to steal fuel from one of the parked two-wheelers. Though he managed to open the fuel pipe of one motorcycle and started stealing the petrol, he spilled some of it. As the area did not have lights, the student lit his lighter to see the petrol," Dhakane said.

"As soon as he ignited the lighter, the petrol caught fire, and the flames reached the fuel tank of the motorcycle. Following this, the flames engulfed all the two-wheelers parked near the motorcycle," he said.
Four fire tenders reached the spot and doused the flames, but some plastic and wooden material kept in the windows of the building caught fire.
Fire station officer Vijay Bhilare said: "Six two-wheelers parked at the entrance of the building were gutted.
Thick, black smoke emanating from the fire spread across the building floors, blocking all entry and exit points. The people stuck in the building made frantic calls for help."
Fire officers Nitin Temgire and Sanjay Jadhav, along with their team members, carried out the rescue operations.
Bhilare told TOI: "The windows of the building started melting because of the intense heat of the fire. We broke the window glass panes and rescued the people using ropes and ladders. Some people were brought down using the staircase."

Youth arrested for trying to murder schoolboy near Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The Sulur police in Coimbatore district on Monday arrested a youth on charges of attempting to murder a schoolboy when the minor refused his homosexual advances. The arrested youth has been identified as M Vasanthakumar, 23, of RR Kulam at Palladam in Tirupur district. He is a butcher. Vasanthakumar attempted to kill a 14-year-old boy, who was studying in Class VIII at a govt school and staying at a govt hostel at Samalapuram near Palladam in Tirupur district. The youth took the boy to a TASMAC outlet where he bought liquor and then to a dilapidated building at Kadampadi where he consumed it. He forced the boy to drink liquor. "The youth showed pornographic videos to the boy and attempted homosexual activities with him. When the minor objected, the youth took a stone and struck on the back of the boy's head. The boy fell unconscious. ‘Drunk' pals go on a drive on Juhu beach, ‘threaten cops'

Mumbai: Three purportedly drunk friends took a car out for a spin on Juhu beach after a night out last Friday, argued with the police personnel who caught them and allegedly threatened to teach them a lesson. Santacruz police lodged an FIR for endangering life, rash driving, and drunk and disorderly driving. They were released after being served a notice. A police officer said the sedan got stuck in the sand and a tractor had to be deployed to pull it out. The vehicle has been impounded. The city's beaches are not open to vehicles and public entry is also restricted at night during the monsoon. They later entered Juhu beach via a restricted path and managed to give patrolling police the slip in the heavy rain. The patrol team found them yelling around 10.15pm after their car got stuck at the beach. "When the police personnel warned them about the consequences of their action, they argued with them," said the officer. "They kept arguing all the way to the police station, threatening to teach them a lesson." After the three sobered up four hours later, they realised an FIR was being lodged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "They then fell at the police personnel's feet, requesting to be let off," said the officer. "The court will decide on suspension of their driving licence." A police source said the men's joyride could have turned fatal but there were no other people on the beach and road traffic was light owing to heavy rain that night. Last Aug, an auto driver, Ganesh Yadav, died after an SUV driven by an allegedly drunk businessman, Nikhil Jawade, ran him over while he was asleep on Versova beach with a friend.

UP sharpshooter linked to Mukhtar Ansari & gangster Sanjeev Jeeva dies in encounter

Agra: A dreaded sharpshooter linked to gangs of slain gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and Sanjeev Jeeva who was wanted in cases of murder, jailbreak, extortion and threats to witnesses in UP and Uttarakhand, died during a police encounter with a UP special task force (STF) team around 1am in Muzaffarnagar on Monday. He was out on bail for the past six months but wanted in a fresh case registered in Sambhal. Police said Shahrukh Pathan, 34, from Muzaffarnagar, was a trusted sharpshooter of the Jeeva gang, and while in prison, he also came in contact with Ansari's gang members. Pathan was recently wanted in Sambhal for allegedly threatening and trying to kill witnesses in a murder case. "The local police and STF teams were looking for him for a while in the fresh case. Early on Monday, based on intelligence inputs, a UP STF team stopped a car near the city's outskirts and Pathan, who was believed to be alone in the vehicle, opened fire. An encounter then broke out in which he was injured. We took him to Muzaffarnagar's district hospital, where he died during treatment," said SSP Sushil Ghule of UP STF. He added: "Over a dozen cases were registered against him in the past. Out of these, three are murder cases, and others are under the Gangster Act." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Took 1 Teaspoon Before Bed – Her Belly Was Gone in a Week Hollywood News | USA Click Here Undo Monday's encounter took place on the stretch leading to the district's Bijopur village on Chappar-Rohana road under Chappar limits and the STF found a pistol, a revolver, a country-made pistol, over 50 cartridges and a car without a number plate, police said. Pathan's criminal history goes back to 2015. He allegedly killed a man named Asif Zaida in police custody in Muzaffarnagar that year. Zaida was being brought from a Prayagraj jail to Muzaffarnagar for court hearing in a murder case at that time. After being arrested, Pathan came in contact with Jeeva and members of Ansari's gang in jail, and began formally working for the former. In 2016, he escaped from police custody in Muzaffarnagar while returning from a court trial. On the run, he killed Amit Dixit alias Goldie, a blanket trader, in Haridwar -- under Jeeva's instructions -- in 2017. A murder case was registered against him in Haridwar. Later that year, he killed Zaida's father, Yasin, a key witness in the Zaida murder case in Muzaffarnagar. UP police thereafter announced a Rs 50,000 bounty on him. Pathan was re-arrested and sent to jail in Uttarakhand. He was sentenced to life term along with Jeeva in the Goldie murder case, and later got bail. Notably, Jeeva was shot dead during a court hearing in Lucknow in 2023.
