Guwahati: Fresh leaves have emerged on several trees recently translocated from Ambari to Lachit Ghat along Mahatma Gandhi Road, as part of the flyover construction project connecting Noonmati to Ambari.
The Public Works Department, in collaboration with a Delhi-based firm, started translocation of over 70 trees two months ago.
Dimpal Saikia, PWD executive engineer, said during this phase, the trees will receive regular watering to keep the carved root zone moist and also organic manure to keep pests and insects away. "Additionally, the soil will be covered with a protective layer, so that its moisture can be retained, helping in their growth.
A party has been given the contract of maintaining the trees for three years," she said.
The Rs 25-lakh project, managed by DIMTC Services, aims for a 95% survival rate, despite public skepticism over the translocation's scientific basis and survival odds. Zakir Alam of DIMTC said, "If the maintenance is done right, significant growth can be seen."
The translocation of these trees come under fire from critics who argue the process was executed unscientifically. They said future relocations must be preceded by comprehensive studies.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A total of 404 sheep died after being struck by an express train. "The incident occurred around 2.15am on Saturday. Our flock of around 600 sheep, belonging to seven shepherds from Bankat village under Bihiya police station, was tethered in an agricultural field. When heavy rain began, wild jackals and stray dogs attacked. Frightened, the sheep bolted towards the nearby railway track. More than 400 were run over by a speeding train, and several others were injured," said shepherd Bharat Pal, speaking alongside six other affected herders. The shepherds estimated each sheep's value at around Rs 8,000, meaning the loss from the death of 404 animals was substantial. Sheep rearing is their sole source of income. Shahpur MLA Rahul Tiwari visited Bankat village, promising to seek compensation for the affected families and offering them some financial assistance. A govt veterinary doctor from Bihiya treated several injured sheep on Saturday morning and carried out a post-mortem on one. A team from Ara railway police also visited the site and began an investigation.
