Unaccounted income invested in Virtual Digital Assets on CBDT radar

Time of India13-06-2025
The Central Board Direct Taxes (
CBDT
) is investigating
tax
evasion and laundering of unaccounted income by high-risk persons through investment in
crypto
currency.
Such entities and individuals which are engaged in
Virtual Digital Asset
(
VDA
) transactions and have failed to comply with the Income-tax Act, 1961 have been identified for verification, sources said.
As per the Section 115BBH of Income Tax Act, 1961 inserted by the Finance Act, 2022 a flat tax rate of 30 per cent (plus applicable surcharge and cess) on income from VDA transfer is applicable. The provision does not allow deduction of any expenses except cost of acquisition.

Further, set-off of loss from VDA investment or trading is not allowed to be set off against any other income or for carry forward to subsequent years.
Sources pointed out that data analytics has shown that a significant number of persons have violated provisions of Income Tax Act by not filing Schedule VDA of ITR and offering tax on the income earned at lower rate or claiming cost indexation.
Live Events
ITRs filed by taxpayers are being verified with TDS returns filed by the Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) popularly known as crypto exchanges and defaulters may be selected for further verification/scrutiny, they said.
It is learnt that CBDT has recently sent emails to thousands of defaulting persons to review their ITR and update if any income on account of VDA transactions have not been properly declared.
CBDT has recently embarked on a new approach termed as NUDGE (Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable) Taxpayers, as a part of TRUST Taxpayers FIRST philosophy. This campaign is seen as the third NUDGE campaign launched by CBDT in the last six months.
Earlier, NUDGE campaigns were on declaration of foreign assets/income by taxpayers and withdrawal of bogus claims of deduction under section 80GGC.

Trump's tariff shocker: How India's commodities and currency reacted

In a dramatic escalation of trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all Indian imports effective August 1, 2025, followed by an additional 25% tariff on August 6. The move, part of a broader geopolitical strategy targeting India's continued trade with Russia, has had immediate and far-reaching consequences across India's financial and commodity markets. On 8th August, Indian gold prices surged to a new lifetime high, driven by global uncertainty, a weakening rupee, and fears of inflationary pressures stemming from the tariffs. Silver prices also rallied, hovering near recent highs. The tariffs may directly impact India's gems and jewellery industry, as it is one of the largest exported items from India to the US. With U.S. buyers facing higher costs, demand for Indian gold jewellery may decline abroad, but domestic investors have turned to gold as a safe haven. The surge in prices reflects both speculative buying and a hedge against currency depreciation. Live Events Energy Commodities: Crude Oil and Natural Gas Decline In contrast, crude oil and natural gas prices in India fell sharply following the tariff announcements. This counterintuitive move was largely driven by fears of reduced global demand and potential oversupply, as India—one of the world's largest oil importers—faces trade penalties for continuing to buy discounted Russian oil. The U.S. tariffs, viewed as a penalty for India's energy ties with Russia, have created uncertainty in global energy flows. Traders anticipate that India may diversify its oil sources, potentially reducing spot market demand. Additionally, the broader risk-off sentiment in global markets has weighed on energy prices, with natural gas futures also declining amid expectations of slower industrial activity. Base Metals: Volatility Takes Center Stage Base metals such as copper, aluminium, zinc, and lead have experienced heightened volatility. These metals are critical to India's engineering and manufacturing exports, many of which are now subject to the 25% tariff. Copper and aluminium, in particular, saw sharp intraday swings as traders weighed the impact of reduced export competitiveness against potential increase in domestic demand. With U.S. buyers likely to shift sourcing to other countries, Indian exporters face shrinking order books. However, some domestic manufacturers may benefit from reduced export competition, creating a complex and volatile pricing environment. Currency Markets: Rupee Nears Record Lows The Indian rupee has not been spared. It is trading near Rs 88 against the dollar, near its record weak levels. The depreciation reflects investor concerns over India's trade balance, potential capital outflows, and the broader economic impact of the tariffs. A weaker rupee makes imports more expensive, adding to inflationary pressures, but it also makes Indian exports more competitive globally—though this advantage is largely offset by the tariffs themselves. Broader Implications and Outlook The tariffs have triggered a chain reaction across India's economy. But India's response has been measured. Rather than retaliate with counter-tariffs, the government is focusing on trade negotiations and structural reforms. Meanwhile, the government is exploring trade diversification strategies, including boosting exports to Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In the short term, volatility is likely to persist across commodities and currency markets. But in the long run, this episode may accelerate India's push for self-reliance, trade diversification, and deeper integration into global supply chains. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank poised for strong FY27 earnings, Says Motilal Oswal's Khemka

India's banking industry is at an inflection point, with public sector banks (PSBs) reversing a decade-long decline in market share, even as overall credit expansion moderates. After a strong 15.6% CAGR in FY22–24, system loan growth eased to 9.8% YoY in July 2025, weighed down by tighter liquidity, regulatory restrictions on unsecured lending , and subdued corporate borrowing . Wholesale credit demand remains weak, further dampening momentum. However, the sector is expected to see a cyclical rebound in 2HFY26, supported by festive demand, better liquidity, and lower interest rates. While stress in unsecured retail loans remains high, delinquency levels have stabilised. Risk-based pricing and easing credit costs should aid recovery in unsecured and microfinance lending, both of which decelerated sharply in FY25. Live Events On the funding side, margins remain under pressure as deposit costs adjust, though a gradual improvement is likely to lift profitability from 2HFY26. PSBs, long held back by asset quality issues and slow modernisation, posted 12% loan growth in FY25—outpacing private banks for the first time in 15 years. Stronger capital positions, improved profitability, and healthier balance sheets drove this turnaround, lifting their market share by ~40bps—the first such gain in over a decade. Nonetheless, slower branch expansion, lagging technology upgrades, and staffing constraints may cap the pace of growth. System credit growth is projected at 11–12.5% over FY26–27, with PSBs likely to post steady but moderate 10–13% CAGR through FY28. Private banks are expected to grow slightly faster but will contend with elevated credit-deposit ratios. Sector earnings should strengthen meaningfully by FY27, signalling the end of the current slowdown. Overall, FY26 begins with a more balanced competitive landscape—PSBs regaining ground and private banks fine-tuning strategies amid margin pressures. Over the medium term, credit demand recovery, asset quality normalisation, and gradual margin improvement will anchor growth. HDFC Bank: Buy| Target Rs 2300| LTP Rs 1995| Upside 15% HDFC Bank is well-positioned to deliver a strong earnings rebound, supported by improving loan growth across Commercial & Rural Banking (CRB), SME, and retail segments. With normalization of the CD ratio and a granular liability profile, the bank is poised to accelerate credit growth—guided to be in line with the system in FY26 and ahead in FY27. Robust asset quality (GNPA/NNPA at 1.4%/0.5% in 1QFY26) and provisioning buffers (INR366b) provide comfort, while margin recovery is expected as high-cost borrowings are replaced by deposits. We estimate HDFCB to deliver FY27E RoA/RoE of 1.9%/14.9%. ICICI Bank: Buy| Target Rs 1670| LTP Rs 1440| Upside 16% ICICI Bank posted 15.5% YoY PAT growth in 1QFY26, aided by stable NIMs at 4.34%, strong treasury gains (₹12.4b), & controlled opex. This reflects its consistent earnings delivery despite sector-wide NIM pressure and rising credit costs. Advances grew 11.5% YoY and 1.7% QoQ, driven by strong momentum in Business Banking (+29.7% YoY, +3.7% QoQ), which now forms 20% of the book. Deposits grew 12.8% YoY, while CASA mix stood at 41.2%. Average CASA ratio improved 30bp QoQ to 38.7%. ICICI's stable GNPA/NNPA at 1.67%/0.41%, ₹131b contingency buffer, & 16.3% CET-1 ratio highlight its robust balance sheet. Continued tech investments and confident Personal Loan/Credit Card outlook position the bank for FY27E RoA/RoE of 2.3%/17.3%.
