Delhi finishes strong, Punjab faces setback
On the field, Delhi Capitals ended their season with a six-wicket win over Punjab Kings. Delhi chased down a target of 207, finishing at 208-4. Sameer Rizvi scored an unbeaten 58 off 25 balls — his first half-century in the IPL — leading the successful run chase.
Punjab Kings had earlier posted a total of 206-8. Despite the loss, Punjab has already secured a playoff spot but now faces a more difficult path to a top-two finish.
Du Plessis reviews Delhi's IPL journey
After the match, Faf du Plessis reflected on Delhi Capitals' overall performance this season. He said the team showed promise but lacked the consistency needed to secure a top-four position.
'Finishing on a high is important. Fifth is a fair reflection of our season, but we need to be more consistent to be in the top-four,' he said.
Delhi started the season strong with four wins but could not maintain momentum in later games. Du Plessis pointed to various factors for the team's inconsistency.
'One of the great mysteries. Combination of confidence, lack of form and basics,' he said.
He also commented on how close margins often determine outcomes in the IPL.
'When you're playing well, small margins go with you. Every single time, there were five-six over windows in both batting and bowling where we let it slip,' he added.

Gukesh beats world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. His silence spoke volumes

D. Gukesh stood motionless for a moment, his hand on his chin, processing what had just happened. He had just defeated five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a classical chess game for the first time in his career — a win few saw coming, especially after a clearly difficult endgame where the 18-year-old looked set for defeat. The dramatic moment unfolded at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, where Carlsen, frustrated by his blunder, banged the table as the pieces tumbled, visibly shaken by the unexpected loss. The outburst shocked fans and commentators alike, with the clip instantly going viral online. Gukesh shook it, still visibly stunned, then slowly stood up, looking dazed and unsure of how to react. As he began walking away, Carlsen gave him a pat on the back—a show of sportsmanship after such an emotional finish. Fans and experts have hailed the match as the "turnaround of the year." Gukesh, capitalising on Carlsen's late blunder, sealed the win in 62 moves over a gruelling four-hour battle. The Indian grandmaster's emotional and almost surreal reaction has resonated widely, with chess enthusiasts celebrating not just the result but the human moment that followed. For Gukesh, it was the perfect comeback—not just from a losing position in the game but from a difficult start to the tournament. After his earlier loss to Carlsen in the first round, many questioned his form. But with this win, he has climbed to third place on the leaderboard with 8.5 points, just one point behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Shreyas Iyer took his time in middle and we knew that was a danger: Mahela Jayawardene

Ahmedabad, Jun 2 (PTI) Mumbai Indians knew Shreyas Iyer giving himself time in the middle to bat long was a sign of 'danger', said head coach Mahela Jayawardene after his side failed to execute in the knockout clash against Punjab Kings. Iyer struck as many as eight sixes and five fours to make 87 not out from only 41 balls to power Punjab Kings into the IPL final for the first time in 11 years. 'He took his time. He knew they would a bit under pressure, so he was taking his time. We knew that was a danger,' Jayawardene told the media after the after wicket loss on Sunday night. 'As long as we didn't give him that partnership with Nehal (Wadhera), we would have been able to squeeze through because he would have had to go (out to attack) early, not wait that long.' 'He got Nehal to do the bulk of the work at that point, so that shows the experience, and he knew he had to take the game deep and he did. We were trying those options with the wickets, but it just didn't work for us today,' Jayawardene added. A former Mumbai Indians player, Wadhera (48 off 29 balls) consolidated for Punjab Kings with a robust 84-run stand for the fourth wicket to turn the tables with Iyer at the helm, while also making the most of two lifelines he got in form of dropped catches. Jayawardene said MI had a good campaign after a poor start to this season. 'It was a good campaign for us, the way we started, and how we regrouped as a team and had played some really, really good cricket,' he said. 'We had our opportunities getting to the playoffs and we had a really good game first up (Eliminator) and even today I thought we played some good cricket, except for Kings playing better cricket than us, especially with the bat." Jayawardene heaped praise on their batting mainstay Suryakumar Yadav who showed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament to finish with 717 runs. His tally marked the first time any MI batter scored 700 of more runs in an IPL season. 'Sky has been brilliant, very consistent,' Jayawardene said. 'Reading the game, especially in those situations. He was very, very good in many different conditions as well, that's where quality of the player stands out." 'For him to be that consistent in playing in different surfaces, different bowling attacks, shows what a quality T20 batsman he is, especially a lot of the times it took the spinners down pretty well and that role was pretty crucial for us,' he added. The head coach's assessed that MI did not get as many runs as they could probably have got which was also among the reasons for their defeat. 'We probably left a bit of runs on the park as well with the bat. We lost our way after having that start. It was (losing) back to back wickets probably (which) slowed us down a little bit,' he said. 'But I thought 200 was still a good score in a qualifier… the pressure. We picked up those wickets as well up front and a few mistakes cost us the game and the bowling also, the execution wasn't up to the standards as well,' he added.

Hardik Pandya Breaks Down As Mumbai Indians Crash Out Of IPL 2025: 'I Take The Blame'

The image of Hardik Pandya sinking to the ground, hands on knees, will remain etched in the minds of Mumbai Indians fans for years. As Shreyas Iyer punched the winning runs to script a famous victory for Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025, the MI skipper dropped to his haunches — not from exhaustion, but heartbreak. This wasn't just a loss. It was a brutal reminder of the weight leadership carries, especially for a franchise as storied and demanding as Mumbai Indians. For Pandya, who returned to lead MI amidst immense scrutiny this season, the semifinal defeat was personal. Feel for Hardik Pandya, he took the team to qualifiers from number 8th in points table. Gave his everything only to be let down by Rohit Sharma with bat and Bumrah with ball. — Pari (@BluntIndianGal) June 1, 2025 'I take the blame,' Pandya admitted at the post-match presentation, his voice subdued. 'Shreyas batted beautifully. It was a par score. But our execution fell short when it mattered most. That's on me.' Pandya's Pain Highlights Mumbai's Season of Contrasts Mumbai Indians' IPL 2025 campaign was anything but ordinary. With a roster stacked with star power — Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and rising talents like Naman Dhir — expectations were sky-high. Yet, the transition under Hardik Pandya's captaincy was rocky. Pandya, battling both form and perception, carried the burden of replacing Rohit Sharma as MI skipper — a decision that split fans and pundits alike. While he remained composed publicly, his collapse after the loss revealed a man emotionally spent, perhaps carrying more than the scoreboard could show. Despite leading from the front with bat and ball throughout the season, the night in Ahmedabad showed that leadership goes beyond stats. Shreyas Iyer's Brilliance Overshadows Mumbai's Fight While Pandya's breakdown became the image of the night, Shreyas Iyer was its protagonist. The Punjab Kings batter played one of the most composed innings of the season — an unbeaten 87 off 41 balls, anchoring a high-pressure 204-run chase with calm, class, and conviction. Nehal Wadhera's gritty 48 off 29 and Josh Inglis' powerplay assault (38 off 21) set the tone, but it was Iyer's calculated assault that deflated MI's bowling attack — including Bumrah, who leaked 40 runs in his four overs. Pandya's own bowling failed to make a breakthrough at a crucial stage. His dropped catch of Wadhera in the 10th over — a tough but pivotal chance — added salt to wounds. As Punjab closed out the match with an over to spare, Pandya stood still, devastated. IPL 2025 Final Set: Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore With Punjab Kings storming into their first IPL final since 2014, a historic title clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore awaits. But even as the spotlight shifts to Ahmedabad on June 3, much of the discussion online revolves around Hardik Pandya's breakdown and Mumbai's missed chance. Search trends reflect the moment's emotional weight — with spikes in keywords like 'Hardik Pandya reaction after MI loss,' 'Hardik Pandya breaks down IPL 2025,' and 'Hardik Pandya IPL 2025 captaincy' dominating fan searches.
