SECI sees record-low price of ₹55.75 per kg in first green ammonia auction

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has achieved a record-low price of ₹55.75 per kg for green ammonia in its first-ever auction under the National Green Hydrogen Mission's SIGHT Scheme (Mode 2A). This holds significance as low-priced green ammonia is pivotal for India to reduce reliance on imported natural gas for fertiliser production, lower carbon emissions, and enhance energy security. It can also significantly cut down the country's fertiliser subsidy burden, promote agricultural sustainability, and drive technological innovation. This auction covers the supply of 75,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia to Paradeep Phosphates Limited, Odisha. It is the first in a planned series of 13 auctions over the coming month, under a tender aggregating a cumulative procurement capacity of 724,000 tonnes a year. The discovered price translates to approximately $641 a tonne, a substantial drop from the previously discovered price of Rs 100.28 a kg ($1,153 per tonne) in the H2Global auction in 2024. With Grey Ammonia prices touching $515 per tonne, as of last March, this 10-year fixed-price bid provides strong economic rationale for offtakers to initiate their clean energy transition journey, according to an official statement. Green ammonia is crucial for India's energy transition due to its potential to decarbonize various sectors, enhance energy security, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It can be a key component in fertilizer production, replacing fossil fuel-based ammonia, and also serves as a storage and transport medium for green hydrogen. By producing green ammonia domestically, India can reduce its dependence on imports, lower the trade deficit, and create new employment opportunities. SECI, acting as the intermediary procurer, has anchored the auction under the guidance of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), with support from the Department of Fertilizers and the participating offtakers. "This price discovery marks a watershed moment in India's Green Hydrogen journey and reinforces the country's vision of becoming a global hub for Green Hydrogen production. The auction witnessed intense competition, reflecting the strong investor and developer confidence in India's green energy transition framework," the statement read. "With robust payment security mechanisms in place, the scheme unlocks confidence across the value chain and enables large-scale adoption of Green Ammonia and other derivatives," it added.

Can still compete at 25% but 50% tariff will lock us out: NCR exporters

Gurgaon/Noida: US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 50% tariff on Indian exports is like a hammer blow, readymade garment manufacturers said on Wednesday, hoping there was still enough room for talks in Delhi and Washington to thrash out a trade deal. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Several exporters TOI spoke to – who make clothes for brands like GAP, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, Mango, Walmart, Target, Macy's, etc – said such a steep tariff would lock them out of the US, which is their biggest market. Indian exporters are already competing against lower-tariff competitors like Bangladesh and Vietnam (both 20%). Having read the tea leaves as talks on a trade deal failed to make a breakthrough and Trump went on to announce a 25% tariff – effective Aug 7 – exporters have been actively exploring deals in alternative markets in Europe and Asia. The additional Russian oil purchase-linked 25% tariff that Trump announced on Wednesday is to come into effect 21 days after Aug 7. "The US market is shutting its doors on us with this tariff. Our buyers have already started pausing orders. We're actively exploring the UK, where demand has been growing, and Dubai, where we already have some presence," said Roshan Baid, managing director of Paragon Textiles. "But replacing the US won't be easy, we've spent years building that market," he added. "We can still compete when the gap (with Bangladesh and Vietnam) is 5% by adjusting cost and tightening margins," said Manoj Sahu of Sahu Exports. "But with a 50% tariff, there's nothing left to work with. The business just collapses," he said. One of India's largest exporters of readymade garments, Noida (Gautam Budh Nagar) has around 4,000 apparel export units with an estimated annual export value of Rs 50,000 crore. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nearly a third of that volume is bound for the US. An industry insider said big exporters based in Gurgaon are now rethinking their decision to open additional units in Noida. "That plan is effectively on hold now," the insider said. If the 50% tariff kicks in, some downsizing of production may become necessary, said Lalit Thukral, president of Noida Apparel Export Cluster. Another industry insider said an exporter who had recently placed orders for 1,500 more sewing machines to expand production cancelled it last week following the announcement of the 25% tariff. "That order was pulled back within a day of the announcement. Uncertainty is just too high now," he said. He also pointed out that if bigger exporters who catered to the American market shift to smaller markets like Dubai and the UK, it would hurt smaller players. "The bigger guys have deeper pockets and can undercut prices and still stay afloat. But smaller exporters won't survive that kind of squeeze," he said. Vikas Gupta of Manesar Industry Welfare Association said he hoped the US would take the additional 25% tariff back and lashed out at Trump for "bullying our country". "We have pending orders and some in the pipeline. The clients will absorb some of the tariff but they will also expect it to be split. This will affect our business and margins. I am in the leather export business, which is heavily dependent on the US market. This has been a turbulent year. We were hoping things would settle by July, but it has become more difficult. The 50% announcement has come as a big shock," said Gupta. "I don't know how to react. I hope Trump will withdraw it. The industry will reach out to the right authorities in govt." Nitin GR, founder of GrandPitstop, which manufactures auto accessories, said he hoped a better deal takes shape because the "US too does not have many options to get these products". "We are already competing against the Chinese. They beat us in quality. The advantage we have is pricing. If the US goes through with 50% tariff, it will be impossible to do business with the US," Nitin said. Arvind Rai of textile company Modelama Export Pvt Ltd urged govt to help exporters by reducing GST on raw materials. "Brands are hesitant about giving new orders. Garment exporters need help," he said.

Andhra govt to roll out free bus travel scheme for women statewide from Aug 15: Minister

'I'm happy to share that free bus travel for women will commence on August 15,' said the State Information and Public Relations Minister, adding that the initiative is aimed at empowering women and enhancing their access to opportunities in education, employment, and other sectors. The scheme, titled 'Stree Shakti' (Women's Power), is expected to cost Rs 1,942 crore annually—approximately Rs 162 crore per month—and aims to empower women by improving access to education, employment, and mobility. Amaravati, Aug 6 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Minister K Parthasarathy on Wednesday announced that the state government's flagship free bus travel scheme for women, a key poll promise, will be launched across the state on August 15. Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Parthasarathy dismissed reports suggesting the scheme would be limited to select districts. 'There were reports that the scheme would be restricted to certain areas, but it has been decided to implement it statewide,' Parthasarathy said. Of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation's (APSRTC) total fleet of 11,449 buses, 8,456—nearly 75 per cent—will operate under the 'Stree Shakti' scheme. Bus services such as Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express will offer free travel to women. The initiative is expected to benefit up to 1.4 crore women annually, with each family potentially saving up to Rs 1,000 per month, Parthasarathy said. The Cabinet also approved several other key proposals, including the Andhra Pradesh Land Incentive for Tech Hub (LIFT) Policy 4.0 (2024–2029). Parthasarathy said the policy was introduced in the wake of Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation and loss of Hyderabad to encourage economic development using existing infrastructure and talent. Under the policy, eligible entities will be allotted land at Rs 0.99 per acre across the state. In the power sector, the Cabinet cleared a government guarantee of Rs 900 crore to the State Bank of India (SBI) and Union Bank of India (UBI) to prevent negative reporting to statutory bodies such as Credit Information Bureau India Limited (CIBIL) and Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (CRISIL) regarding the Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Ltd (APPDCL). Delays in payments from DISCOMs to APPDCL were cited as the primary reason for the financial strain. Additionally, the Cabinet approved a proposal by the Energy Department to increase the free electricity quota for hair-cutting salons from 150 units to 200 units per month to support the social and economic upliftment of the Nayi Brahmin community. Further, government guarantees amounting to Rs 3,544 crore and Rs 1,029 crore were approved for Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (APSPDCL) and Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Ltd (APCPDCL), respectively. These are in lieu of counterpart and interim fund loans sanctioned by PFC Ltd for the successful implementation of the revamped distribution sector scheme (RDSS), with a two per cent guarantee commission. The Cabinet also extended the ban on the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and its front organisations under the Andhra Pradesh Public Security Act, 1992, for another year. These include the Radical Youth League (RYL), Rythu Coolie Sangham (RCS), Grameen Peedala Sangham, Radical Students Union (RSU), Singareni Karmika Samakhya (SIKASA), Viplava Karmika Samakhya (VIKASA), All India Revolutionary Students Federation (AIRSF), and Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF). Among other decisions, the Cabinet sanctioned five assistant public prosecutor posts for Puttaparthi, Movva, Gannavaram, Gajuwaka, and Tirupati, and approved a proposal allowing the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) to raise a Rs 7,500-crore loan for industrial development.
