Jack Draper shows true colours as he speaks out about Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon

Daily Mirror8 hours ago
Jack Draper saw his Wimbledon dream come to an end at the hands of Marin Cilic in the second round on Thursday, but he is hopeful that Emma Raducanu can keep British hopes alive
Jack Draper has backed Emma Raducanu to carry the British torch at Wimbledon following his own second-round exit. While he was initially tipped as Britain's best shot for a significant run, Draper faced defeat yet again in an early round.
World No. 83 Marin Cilic proved too strong for the fourth seed on Centre Court with a mighty display. Now attention turns to Raducanu, Cameron Norrie and Sonay Kartal, who remain in contention among the 23 Brits who began in the main draw.

Speaking of British chances, Draper declared in his post-match presser following his defeat to the former US Open champion: "Of course [we] still have British hope. Emma is playing great. I watched her play yesterday. That was amazing."

Raducanu has dazzled crowds at the prestigious club with solid victories over Mimi Xu and former champ Marketa Vondrousova, but now faces a formidable challenge, with world number one Aryna Sabalenka lying in wait, reports the Express.
Nevertheless, Draper remains optimistic about Raducanu's prospects against the Belarusian powerhouse, saying: "She has a real opportunity. I hope she goes on and does us all proud. She's definitely got the capability to do that."
The men's UK No. 1 also voiced his support for fellow Brits at Wimbledon, saying: "Cam, Sonay, these guys are going to be flying the flag now. I think they're incredible players, they all want it so badly.
"I know them all personally. They're all great people, great players. They deserve everything they're going to get. I'm looking forward to watching them play." The 22-year-old acknowledged the sting of his own recent loss might keep him from watching the matches up close.
"Maybe I'll try to stay away from it, in all honesty, because it hurts badly," Draper shared, expressing both his emotional struggle and hearty good wishes for his peers: "I want them to have amazing success. They deserve that for sure."

Buzz around Draper surged when he trounced Sebastian Baez early on, only to see the Argentine bow out in the third set with an injury. Still, experienced star Cilic, 36, rolled back the years and pulled off a stunner against the British hopeful at Wimbledon on Thursday.
The Croatian legend delivered a volley of 16 aces among other formidable shots across the net, setting the stage for a third-round face-off with Jaume Munar at the iconic All England Club. Following his defeat, Draper admitted his frustration in how he's performed on grass this year as he sounded off: "I've been really disappointed with the way my game's been on the grass this year, in all honesty.
"I wasn't feeling too great at Queen's. I don't know how I made the semis there. This year I really struggled on the grass. I felt great on the hard, felt great on the clay, I felt like there weren't many holes in my game, whereas as soon as I came on to the grass, I felt a big difference.
"It highlighted a lot of weaknesses in my game, especially against a player the way he was playing today, someone as good as him on the grass. I think the hole in my forehand showed up, for sure.
"I wasn't able to deal with his pace of ball into my forehand. I was over-spinning a lot. I think a lot of my success this year with my forehand was when I have more time and I can create the speed and the spin that I want."

Portuguese players pay tribute to Diogo Jota during Wimbledon doubles match

Portuguese pair Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral paid tribute to compatriot Diogo Jota by wearing black ribbons on court at Wimbledon. Borges wore the item on his cap during his third-round singles clash with 17th seed Karen Khachanov after Cabral donned one on his shirt sleeve during his doubles match earlier on Friday as the All England Club relaxed its strict all-white dress code to allow tributes to the Liverpool forward. Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday while travelling to catch a ferry to the UK ahead of pre-season. Cabral said he was driving to Wimbledon when he heard the news, describing the footballer as 'an idol, such an icon, such a good person' in Portugal. After his defeat in the men's doubles alongside Lucas Miedler, he added: 'Yesterday the idea of wearing a black strap came up – that was not allowed. 'I asked for permission to use the black ribbon and they let me play with it. 'It was an honour – it was not for the best reason. 'He was an inspiration not only for me but for the country in general.' Liverpool fan and British doubles player Neal Skupski had also brought a black armband for his match on Thursday but opted not to wear it. The 35-year-old then found out about the death of his grandmother shortly after coming off court of his first-round win alongside fellow Briton Joe Salisbury. Skupski suggested he may wear one later in the tournament, saying: 'Maybe in the next couple of days.'

Sonay Kartal shines in Wimbledon spotlight to clinch best grand slam result

Many British players have wilted under the Wimbledon spotlight but Sonay Kartal is revelling in it. The 23-year-old from Brighton roared into the fourth round after sweeping aside French qualifier Diane Parry. She is in the last 16 of a grand slam for the first time in her career after a sizzling 6-4 6-2 victory. When Jack Draper was knocked out by Marin Cilic on Thursday he admitted the expectation levels surrounding home players made him realise just how big two-time winner Andy Murray's achievements were. But laid-back Kartal is taking all the hype in her stride as she prepares for a crack at Russian veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in the quarter-finals. 'I enjoy it. I think it's an honour,' she said. 'Obviously if you've got a lot of attention on you, it means you're doing good things. 'I'm pretty calm and pretty collected. I don't think it's going to affect me too much. But no, I'm just enjoying it all. I'll still pretty young. It's my first fourth round. 'I feel like I'm going to go out on the court in the next round kind of with nothing to lose at the minute. I'm going to go swinging. 'I think the pressure that I'll feel is the pressure I will be putting on myself just wanting to perform as best as I can.' Kartal, ranked 298 this time last year, is on the cusp of the top 50 and could even finish the tournament as British number one, usurping Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter. She is the fourth unseeded British woman to reach the fourth round this century after Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Raducanu. Kartal has been shining on Court Three this week but on Friday she was first up on Court One, the scene of her defeat by Coco Gauff at the same stage last year. She made a nervous start, falling 4-1 behind, but then won the next nine games to move a set and 4-0 up on her way to a hugely impressive victory in an hour and 22 minutes. 'I'm not going to lie, I was pretty nervous walking out there,' she added. 'It's a big court with a match that has a lot of meaning to me. 'Obviously last year, that was also in the back of my mind, losing to Coco on the same court in the same round. 'I tried to take everything I learnt from that match and put it into play on the court, tried to relax as best as I could. 'When I got it level, I felt like I was pretty good. The nerves were gone. I just felt super comfortable out there.'
