Visakhapatnam: In a bid to develop affordable apartment housing for people belonging in the middle-income segment, the
Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority
(
VMRDA
) is set to conduct an interest survey across the city. This marks the first such initiative by any urban local body in the state in recent decades.Existing govt schemes provide one cent of land in urban areas and financial aid for home construction to the homeless poor or financial assistance for those who already own land.
However, there is currently no provision for middle- or higher-income groups (MIG/HIG). The VMRDA aims to tap into this segment. The state govt, in collaboration with various urban development authorities, is already in the process of developing MIG layouts. Lotteries have been conducted in multiple rounds for the sale of plots in these layouts. In the last two years, the VMRDA has developed several MIG layouts under the NTR Smart Township Layout scheme across Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, and Vizag districts. However, only plots have been sold to the public, with construction being the buyer's responsibility. The proposed middle-income apartment housing by the VMRDA targets those looking to buy a home at prices lower than market rates.Speaking to TOI, VMRDA chairperson MV Pranav Gopal said that this initiative has been mooted to serve the MIG segment. "This will be a win-win situation for both the public and the VMRDA. While the public will receive quality-assured, constructed homes at subsidised prices, the project will also generate revenue for the VMRDA. From Madhurawada and Bheemili to Anakapalli, Vizianagaram and other areas, we have a vast land bank. The survey will assess various components, including an individual's income, occupation, expected price range, preferred location, expected amenities and desired plot size. The results will guide our next steps," said Pranav Gopal.

At Times Mobility Utsav, Auto enthusiasts dive into diverse vehicle experiences

Hubballi: Times Mobility Utsav, Hubballi's biggest auto expo, organised by TOI in Hubballi, attracted a huge crowd on Sunday. Visitors, accompanied by their friends and family members, enquired about vehicles of their choice. The number of visitors was five times more than Saturday's crowd. Despite mild rain in the afternoon, automobile enthusiasts attended the event. Lingaraj Dharwad, an insurance adviser, said that it was a unique opportunity to understand vehicles manufactured by 15 companies. "If we were supposed to visit all these companies, it would take a month or more. We wish TOI organises more such expos in the coming days. There is a need for a dedicated expo for electric segment vehicles," he said. Bharat Kulgod, an employee of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), shared that many people downloaded the BIS Care App to check the authenticity of products with the ISI mark, by using 'Verify Licence Details'. "Most visitors were unaware that there is an app by the Union govt to check the integrity of products they need. Hence, this expo turned into a platform to educate commoners," he asserted. Prajwal Kurli, marketing-in-charge at Toyota, shared that there was much enquiry about the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which has multiple fuel options of petrol, CNG, and hybrid. Akshaya Motors, Deutsche Motoren, Volvo, and Martial Motors were luxury partners, while Isuzu, Nexa, Royal Enfield, Hyundai, Shodha Toyota, Ather, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra were platinum partners. Canara Bank was the banking partner, while BIS was the road safety partner for the expo. Consumer forum orders refund after Covid-19 disrupts travel plans

In a classic case of vacation plans gone viral, the Ghaziabad Consumer Forum has ruled in favor of Ishan Pratap Singh, a traveler who was forced to cancel a family trip to the Maldives in 2021 after testing positive for Covid-19—just a day before departure, reported TOI. Singh had booked the dream getaway from Mumbai through Ineedtrip , a Ghaziabad-based travel agency, coughing up a hefty Rs 1.9 lakh as an advance (and even taking a Rs 1.4 lakh loan to fund it). But when he tested positive via an RT-PCR on March 12, he requested the agency to reschedule the trip originally planned for March 13–17, as per the TOI report. Though he tried to shuffle the dates—first aiming for May, then April, and finally November 2021—he was met with repeated refusals. The agency cited expiry of certain travel packages and warned of forfeiture by the partner hotel after September. Despite these pandemic-related hurdles and Singh's continued EMI payments for the loan, Ineedtrip refused to refund the money. They also skipped responding to the consumer forum's notices. Unimpressed, forum members Praveen Kumar Jain and RP Singh passed an ex parte order, declaring Ineedtrip's actions a clear 'deficiency in service' under the Consumer Protection Act. Live Events Now, the travel agency must refund the Rs 1.9 lakh within 45 days, plus 6% interest from the date of the order until the amount is paid. To top it off, they've been ordered to shell out Rs 5,000 more for Singh's legal costs and mental agony. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

In big relief for lakhs of office-goers and daily travellers, the government has approved the long-pending move to shift Gurgaon's Kherki Daula toll plaza to Pachgaon, beyond Manesar, on the busy Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-48). The move will ease traffic congestion and cut costs for those commuting between Delhi and to a report by TOI, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has cleared the plan. To avoid future traffic jams at the new location, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will set up a Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system. In this system, vehicles won't need to stop, cameras will read registration numbers and deduct toll from FASTag wallets the toll plaza is moved over 15 km away from Gurgaon, people travelling between Delhi and Manesar won't have to pay any toll at all. Locals have been demanding this change since 2014, arguing that the toll has already recovered more money than what was spent to build the road. In fact, the government told Lok Sabha in March that Rs 2,775 crore had been collected from tolls, which is 11% more than the Rs 2,489 crore spent on the Delhi-Gurgaon told TOI that the Haryana government has given around 28 acres of land to the NHAI for the new toll plaza. It will be set up near the Pachgaon interchange, where the Western Peripheral Expressway meets NH-48. The location was chosen to ensure smooth flow of vehicles and to avoid further tolling for those coming from the Dwarka Expressway side and heading towards MLFF system will bring a big change. Since there will be no physical barrier or stopping point, traffic jams like the ones currently seen at Kherki Daula can be avoided. A source also said that once the annual toll pass for private vehicles is introduced, many current issues will be resolved decision fulfils a promise made several times over the past 7–8 years by both Haryana and central governments. Locals near the Kherki Daula toll plaza have long protested, saying toll operators have made enough profit and that the tolling has caused daily also reports that this move could now increase pressure on the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to remove physical toll booths on the capital's borders. These booths often cause major traffic jams, which defeat the purpose of building high-speed expressways for faster from TOI
