UAE launches landmark $60mln initiative to expand accessible education for visually impaired students in Ethiopia
In collaboration with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, a USD 60 million (AED 220 million) investment by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation will fund the development of new schools and inclusive educational programmes

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Under the directives of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and in the lead-up to the AU Summit opening today — where advancing development in Africa is a key focus — the UAE announced a landmark USD 60 million (AED 220 million) education initiative in collaboration with the Federal Democratic Republic in Ethiopia.
Launched through the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation – a portfolio entity of Erth Zayed Philanthropies – the initiative will support the construction and development of schools tailored to the educational needs of visually impaired students across Ethiopia.
The initiative reinforces the UAE's commitment to inclusive and sustainable development in Africa and builds on the success of the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak School for the Blind in Addis Ababa, which was inaugurated in May 2024.
The agreement was signed by His Excellency Mohamed Haji AlKhoori, Director General of the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, in the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trustee of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, along with Her Excellency Mrs Zinash Tayachew, First Lady of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, among other dignitaries.
With an estimated 1.2 million visually impaired individuals in Ethiopia, including 332,000 classified as blind, this initiative directly addresses a pressing humanitarian need by reaching rural areas where educational and healthcare services remain limited. Ethiopia also has one of the highest global rates of trachoma, a preventable eye disease that disproportionately affects underserved communities. With the support of the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, the new schools will serve as centres of excellence, integrating cutting-edge assistive technologies, specialised curricula, and tailored vocational programmes to empower visually impaired students with the skills necessary for higher education and workforce integration.

H.E. further stressed the significance of support handles in bathrooms to assist with standing and moving, as these are the most common sites for household accidents. Simple changes can mitigate major risks. To avoid tripping, remove loose carpets and exposed cables, as safe flooring equals safe steps. The layout of furniture should allow for simple movement, particularly for persons who use assistive devices such as walkers or wheelchairs. Senior citizens can roam more freely and safely in open settings. Safe Homes Director of the Strategic Planning and Institutional Development Department at FDF, H.E. Abdulrahman Al Balushi, discussed one of the key initiatives—the launch of the 'Safe Home Preparation Guide.' He noted that the initiative aims to create a home environment that is safer and more comfortable for seniors, accommodating their health and functional guide also raises family awareness and encourages home redesign using modern technologies that simplify daily life and enhance social stability.H.E. Al Balushi explained that the modifications made to the bedroom are necessary, as it is the place where senior citizens feel comfortable and include slip-resistant flooring, support handles, adjustable bed height and the positioning of an emergency call button or bell near the bed. UAE to apply outdoor midday work ban from June 15
The annual outdoor work ban between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. is expected to come into force on June 15 and end on September 15, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) announced. For the 21st consecutive year, is part of a sustainable approach implemented by the UAE to provide a safe work environment that meets best practices and occupational health and safety requirements, thus protecting workers from injuries and damages that may result from working in high temperatures during the summer months. His Excellency Mohsen Al Nasi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection and Compliance Sector at the Ministry, said that the midday work ban has achieved a pioneering level of compliance, reaching more than 99 per cent for consecutive years. Fines will be imposed on companies violating the policy, amounting to a minimum of AED 5,000 per worker and a maximum of AED 50,000 in the event of multiple workers. He pointed out the Ministry's keenness to educate establishments and their employees about the importance of adhering to the provisions of the "midday work ban" through field visits by inspectors, which include work sites and workers' housing- contributing to enhancing awareness of occupational health and safety requirements, and protecting workers from sunstroke and heat stress. For her part, Her Excellency Dalal Al Shehhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Labor Protection Sector, pointed out that the midday work ban has become a pioneering model of partnership between the Ministry, the private sector, and members of the community, as partners develop initiatives for workers during the ban period. This reinforces the concept of social responsibility and confirms the success of the awareness-raising approach and the consolidation of humanitarian concepts in the UAE's work environment, which hosts more than 200 nationalities to live, work, and invest. This aligns with the objectives of the "We the Emirates" Vision 2031. She commended private sector establishments that have, over the past years, taken the initiative to provide fully equipped rest areas to ensure complete comfort for workers during the daily work ban. This confirms these establishments' awareness of the importance of taking measures to preserve workers' health before resuming daily work after the suspension period. She called on private sector establishments to implement such initiatives, which will positively impact workers' health and enhance their productivity. The "noontime work ban" provisions require companies to provide tools and supplies for the ban period, provide shaded areas for workers to protect them from the sun during off-duty periods or while performing licensed work, as well as provide appropriate cooling equipment such as fans, sufficient quantities of water, and hydrating materials like salts and similar products approved for use by local authorities in the country, as well as other amenities and first aid equipment in the workplace. The midday work ban provisions ensure the continuity of work in a manner that serves the public interest. They stipulate the exception of some works that require continuous work for technical reasons, such as asphalt mix laying and concrete pouring if they cannot be implemented or completed after the ban period, and works necessary to avert danger or repair faults that affect society in general, such as interruptions in water supply lines, power outages, traffic disruptions, and other faults in essential services. The exception also includes works that require a permit from a competent government authority due to their impact on traffic and public life.

UAE- WHO initiative aims to combat malnutrition on Yemen's Socotra Island
The UAE's Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday launched an initiative aimed at combatting malnutrition among women and children on Yemen's Socotra Island. Global reports say that Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate in the island has reached 10.9 per cent, and the Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) rate is 1.6 per cent among children under five. Internationally, GAM rates between 10 per cent and 14 per cent are classified as serious, while SAM rates above 1 per cent are considered alarming. Mohamed Haji Al Khouri, Director-General of the Foundation, stressed the UAE's humanitarian and global responsibility to develop communities and enhance critical health services. 'This stems from the enduring humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. We are determined to effectively address food and health challenges faced by women and children in Socotra, in collaboration with the WHO,' he said. Al Khouri explained that the Khalifa Foundation, an affiliate of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, would work with the WHO to develop appropriate solutions to nutritional and health challenges using a new survey based on current data. 'The joint initiative aims to reduce maternal and child mortality caused by malnutrition through a comprehensive plan of action spanning over two years. This will enhance maternal, infant, and child care services, and improve emergency preparedness and response to epidemics,' he added. Acting WHO Representative in Yemen Dr. Ferima Coulibaly-Zerbo said, 'This joint effort reflects our shared vision of building resilient health systems in Yemen. Together with the UAE and national authorities we are working to address urgent needs and lay the foundation for long-term health security on the Island. "Through this partnership, WHO and the UAE aim to build stronger, more responsive and more equitable health systems to serve the people of Socotra and contribute to a healthier, more resilient Yemen.' The initiative is part of joint aid activities between the UAE and WHO in Yemen aimed to provide urgent food relief and curb nutritional and health deterioration across various population groups. It will strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Socotra by training medical staff, supplying medications, and establishing emergency preparedness mechanisms. It also seeks to implement sustainable solutions for malnutrition, ensure food security, raise community awareness, and improve disease surveillance for more effective medical interventions based on ongoing assessments and studies.
