The special weather statement was issued at 10:48 a.m. Saturday.
The agency's weather forecast says the city may see smoke arrive Saturday afternoon and it could last until early Sunday afternoon.
The latest air quality statement comes as the city is set to host its first Ironman triathlon Sunday, with hundreds of racers expected to participate.

The weather agency adds that smoke may persist for much of the weekend for parts of southern Ontario.
The smoke may pose health risks, Environment Canada said, advising people in affected areas to limit time outdoors and to consider rescheduling outdoor activities.

Why is the sun red? How Gifford Fire smoke alters appearance of the sky
If the sun is appearing redder or more orange in color to some Californians, it may be due to the 65,000-acre Gifford Fire burning in the Los Padres National Forest. 'Smoke from the Gifford Fire was observed high in the atmosphere above the South Coast Air Basin and Coachella Valley on Monday morning, based on satellite imagery,' said Rainbow Yeung, a spokesperson for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, in an email to the Desert Sun. 'These elevated smoke particles scatter sunlight, creating the reddish appearance of the sun and sky.' The South Coast Air Basin encompasses portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties and all of Orange County, according to a South Coast AQMD map. How intense this effect can be depends both on the concentration and size of smoke particles, Yeung said, and more smoke means a 'more pronounced color change.' Smoke from wildfires has caused the sun to appear more vibrantly reddish orange to people nationwide over the years. Just this weekend, Boston's skyline took on a red hue due to wildfire smoke from Canada, the Weather Channel reported on Monday, Aug. 4. 'Once winds transport the smoke away, typically within a few hours after fire emissions subside, the sky's appearance returns to normal,' Yeung said. Air quality monitor for SoCal: See how bad the air is near you As of 12:50 p.m. on Aug. 4, the air quality for much of Los Angeles county and parts of Ventura County toward Santa Clarita, parts of San Bernardino County south of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains, much of Riverside County and Orange County was moderate, according to the South Coast AQMD. Some exceptions included the Desert Hot Springs area in the Coachella Valley and a swath of the Banning Pass, where the air quality was unhealthy for sensitive groups, like people with heart or lung disease, older adults and youth. Moderate means that the air quality is 'acceptable,' although 'unusually sensitive people should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion,' according to the Air Quality Index. Similarly, the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District is reporting an AQI of moderate in the region for two types of pollutants harmful to people's health: particulate matter smaller than 10 microns in diameter and particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter (both smaller than a strand of human hair, explains the California Air Resources Board). Two Atlantic systems being monitored as Tropical Storm Dexter moves away from U.S.
Tropical Storm Dexter continues to track northeastward between eastern Canada and Bermuda, posing no threat to land, while forecasters are keeping an eye on two additional systems in the Atlantic with potential for development later this week. As of Monday, Dexter is moving at 15 mph northeastward and is expected to stay over open waters, well away from the U.S. East Coast. The storm maintains winds between 45 and 50 mph and is forecast to remain a tropical storm for the next two to three days before becoming post-tropical over the North Atlantic. Although Dexter will not approach land, its sustained winds are expected to kick up seas along parts of the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada. Forecasters say a low-pressure system may develop by midweek just off the Florida Peninsula, stretching as far south as West Palm Beach. While the system is expected to remain close to South Florida, any development would likely move north-northwest along the Southeast coast. As of now, the National Hurricane Center has given it a 0% chance of development over the next 48 hours. Another area of interest is a tropical wave moving off the west coast of Africa on Monday afternoon. It is expected to travel west-northwest this week across the central tropical Atlantic. Gradual development could occur later this week or into the weekend, with the potential for a tropical depression to form. Forecasters said the system's long-range track remains uncertain, and it will be monitored over the next week and a half.

NYC air quality worsens again amid Canadian wildfire haze
NEW YORK — Hazy skies and low air quality returned to the five boroughs on Monday, as smoke from Canadian wildfires again created a gray scene in the New York skies. All of New York state and almost all of New England was under an air quality alert from the National Weather Service on Monday afternoon. The warning for New York City extended until midnight. 'Air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with heart or lung conditions,' NYC's emergency department wrote on social media. 'You may notice a faint smell of smoke, and low visibility conditions.' It has become a depressingly familiar story for New Yorkers in recent years. Smoke from uncontrolled wildfires in Canada, most of them in the province of Manitoba, has been carried south and east by common wind patterns. The worst air quality in recent years occurred in June 2023, when the smoke became so thick it created an orange haze over the city. However, the subpar air quality has returned to the city in each of the past two summers as well, including multiple times earlier this year. 'Limit outdoor activity, close windows, use air purifiers if available, and consider wearing a high-quality mask if you must go outside and are in a sensitive group,' NYC Emergency Management warned. New York was hardly alone in dealing with poor air quality on Monday. All of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Delaware, along with the majority of Vermont were also under air quality alerts. _____
