World Series to Start on Oct. 24; MLB Confirms No Plans For Earlier Date

Major League Baseball announced that the World Series will start on Oct. 24, dropping its plan to start the World Series early if both League Championship Series are short.
MLB last year said Game 1 would move up from Oct. 25 to Oct. 22 if the LCS ended by Oct. 19, when both leagues were scheduled to be through Game 5. But the New York Mets won Game 5 of the NL Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6.
Since the LCS expanded to best-of-seven in 1985, both leagues ended in four or five games in 1989, 2001, 2002, 2014 and 2022. Last year was the first in which MLB announced a flexible schedule.
Game 7 of this year's World Series would be on Nov. 1. The World Series ended in November in 2001, '09, '10, '15, '16, '17, '21 and '22 and '23, going as late as Nov. 5 in 2022.

The World Series is scheduled to start on a Friday for the fifth straight year. Before 2022, the Series had not started on a Friday since 1915.
NL Division Series will have an extra scheduled off day between Games 1 and 2, a format that allows a team to have the same pitchers start Games 1 and 4, and Games 2 and 5 on normal four days' rest. Last year, AL Division Series had the extra off day.
All four best-of-three Wild Card Series are scheduled for consecutive days from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the side of the higher seed.
Twelve teams make the playoffs under the format that began in 2022. The top two teams in each league get first-round byes, while the No. 3 seed faces No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5. The higher seed will be home in each best-of-three series.
In the best-of-five Division Series, the top seed plays the 3-vs.-6 winner and the No. 2 seed plays the 4-vs.-5 winner. The Division Series will have the familiar format of the higher seed home for Games 1 and 2, and, if necessary, Game 5.
AL Division Series also will start Oct. 4-5 followed by travel day and switch to the other sites for games on Oct. 7-8. Game 5s would be Oct. 10.
NL Division Series start on Oct. 4, have an off day followed by a game on Oct. 5, then switch to the other cities on Oct. 8-9. After another travel day, Game 5s would be played Oct. 11.
The AL Championship Series starts Oct. 12 and the NL Championship Series the following day, with off days after Game 2s and Game 5s.

Ozzie Albies hits cleanup for some reason, Sean Murphy back in lineup against Mets
The Atlanta Braves will be facing the New York Mets again tonight and the focus will be on the offense. The Braves were able to manage five runs last night but will likely need that and more if they want to win this matchup. Carlos Carrasco has had a solid career with a great comeback story, but he is clearly near the end of it. His underlying metrics show he has been a bit unlucky, but he still holds an underwhelming 6.18 ERA and 5.28 FIP across 43.2 innings this season. This likely means the offense will need to produce at a high level for the Braves if they want to stand a chance. They will be facing David Peterson who is having the best two season stretch of his career in terms of preventing runs. He had a 2.90 ERA in 121.0 innings last season and has a 2.98 ERA this season over 133.0 innings. The Braves' offense has not been terrible since the start of August. They are fourteenth in MLB in wRC+. This is obviously not ideal, but it is much better than some may have expected. Some of this is due to Michael Harris making some adjustments and heating up, as well as Marcell Ozuna seemingly breaking out of his slump he has had since hurting his hip. Speaking of Ozuna, he leads all players on the active roster with twenty ABs against Peterson. He only has a .200 average against him, but does have an OPS of .738 thanks to two solo HRs. Matt Olson easily has the best record against him. In nineteen ABs he has four HRs, twelve RBI, .263 average, and a 1.259 OPS. The only two other players with at least thirteen ABs against Peterson are Albies and Harris. In thirteen ABs, Harris has struggled mightily with a .077 average and .231 OPS. Albies has not been much better with a .200 average and .400 OPS in fifteen ABs. Sean Murphy is back in the lineup, Eli White gets the start, and Ozzie Albies will hit cleanup. Yes, Ozzie Albies who has a .400 OPS against Peterson in fifteen at-bats. The Mets are going with the exact same lineup as they had yesterday. Even though Carrasco has been in MLB since 2009, only three hitters on the Mets have faced him before. Tyrone Taylor, who is not starting tonight, Juan Soto, and Cedric Mullins. Mullins has struggled against him with a .222 average and .444 OPS in nine ABs. Soto has ten ABs and has a .200 average, but a .833 OPS thanks to a HR. First pitch is at 7:10 EDT

Rookie Troy Melton allows 1 hit as Tigers beat White Sox 1-0 to win series
CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Troy Melton allowed one hit in five innings and three Detroit Tigers relievers maintained a shutout of the Chicago White Sox in a 1-0 win on Wednesday. It was a series-clinching win for the Tigers, who advanced to 70-52 and extended a narrow lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. The Tigers are just 11-14 since the All-Star Break, while the division-rival Guardians are 16-7 in that stretch. Melton (3-1, 2.82 ERA) threw 56 pitches over five innings. The 24-year-old struck out six batters. Luis Robert Jr. hit a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Melton responded with three consecutive swinging strikeouts to end his day. Since giving up six earned runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates in his July 23 debut, Melton has been responsible for just one run in four appearances. Tigers relievers Sawyer Gipson-Long, Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest combined to allow one hit over the final four innings. Vest picked up his 18th save of the season. Wenceel Pérez hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth inning off Martín Pérez (1-2, 3.09), who surrendered three hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings. Chicago starter Shane Smith held Detroit to two hits in five innings and threw five strikeouts. Key moment Pérez's sacrifice fly brought Kerry Carpenter home for the game's first and only run. Key stat Carpenter was the lone player on either team to log a multi-hit game. The outfielder went 2-for-4. Up next The Tigers head to Minnesota for a four-game series against the Twins on Thursday, with Tarik Skubal (11-3, 2.35 ERA) on the mound. Hunter Goodman's pinch 2-run homer gives the Rockies a 6-5 win over the Cardinals
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pinch-hitter Hunter Goodman hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, rallying the Colorado Rockies to a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. With one out, Goodman connected on a 3-2 sinker from JoJo Romero (4-4) and sent it 432 feet over the center field fence to score Kyle Karros, who led off with a walk. Goodman, who leads the Rockies with 24 homers, also hit a 436-foot blast in Colorado's 3-0 win on Tuesday. Mickey Moniak also homered for Colorado, and Karros had two hits and scored twice. Braxton Fulford drove in two runs. Alec Burleson and Lars Nootbaar each homered for St. Louis. Pedro Pagés had two hits and drove in two runs. Jimmy Herget (1-2) struck out two in a scoreless eighth and Victor Vodnik pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Burleson belted an 0-2 fastball just inside the right field foul pole after Masyn Winn led off the fifth inning with a single, giving St. Louis a 5-1 lead.
