Napoli's title hopes shaken by late Genoa equaliser as Inter close in
Napoli's Serie A title hopes suffered a late setback on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, setting up a thrilling season finale with closest rivals Inter Milan just one point behind.
The hosts remain top with 78 points, holding a slim lead over Inter, who won 2-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, with two rounds remaining.
To make matters worse for Napoli, midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, struggling with an ankle injury, was forced off just minutes after the match began.
Scott McTominay delivered a perfect pass into the box where Romelu Lukaku got rid of his marker before guide his shot into the bottom corner to give Napoli the lead in the 15th minute.
Genoa came close to scoring an equaliser on the half-hour mark as Andrea Pinamonti's header from a free kick hit the top of the crossbar.
Genoa levelled in the 32nd minute when Honest Ahanor's header hit the bar, with Napoli keeper Alex Meret initially parrying it into the post, only for the rebound to bounce off his body and into the net for an own goal.
The sombre mood at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium lifted in the 64th minute when Giacomo Raspadori drilled a screamer from close range, restoring Napoli's lead and sending the blue-and-white supporters into a frenzy.
CALM URGED
However, a Johan Vasquez header six minutes from time silenced the crowd as the realisation hit that the title race had been blown wide open again.
McTominay urged fans to stay calm, reminding them that Napoli still hold a narrow lead in the title race.
"We have to stay calm, this is not the time to panic," McTominay told DAZN.
"Genoa are a strong team, they scored two good goals and we have to look at what we did wrong there."
Napoli will visit Parma next before finishing the season by hosting Cagliari, while Inter will next play Lazio at home before travelling to Como for their final match.
"We've got to keep the same attitude we've had so far, because this is what got us here, so keep going with the same intensity and hard work that we've done every single day," Raspadori added.

HT Kick Off: A tale of two coaches
Manolo Marquez and Luciano Spalletti knew they were not staying beyond this week's engagements. Spalletti had wanted to after the 0-3 defeat to Norway but was not allowed by the Italian federation which, bizarrely, after sacking him, let him continue against Moldova and finish on a winning note. Marquez could not though it cannot yet be said he is a former India coach because the formalities of the separation have not been completed. Unlike Spalletti, he had had enough. It is not known when, if at all, given that there is talk of a non-disclosure agreement, India will get to know why. 'It is not the moment to speak about this,' Marquez said after the defeat in Hong Kong when asked if would continue. The Spaniard not denying he would leave – HT had reported the possibility on May 6 – is crucial but that is only half the story. The away win against France, and a quarter-final in the Nations League notwithstanding, Spalletti's time with Italy (11 wins in 23 matches) was underwhelming. It was worse for Marquez. He had one win from eight matches. It was the inability to win against Mauritius, Bangladesh and Hong Kong, all ranked significantly lower than India, that rankled. Successful with Hyderabad FC and FC Goa and having forged a reputation for improving Indian players, Marquez's first stint as a national team head coach will be a blot on his career. Spalletti has explained why he could not succeed. Puskur's comment on the deleterious effect of money shows how little has changed. Spalletti had to supervise a transition, not so much Marquez barring the going and coming of Sunil Chhetri and a change in goalkeepers. After the 2021 Euro triumph. Italy had no Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Jorginho and Federico Chiesa's playing time had reduced, Sandro Tonali was banned and players had moved to Canada and Qatar. 'We certainly are not leaving my successor a sense of enthusiasm…,' said Spalletti. No manager can. At best, they can get a few good results which will take India back to the late 90s in FIFA rankings and then the slide will follow. Sport is full of surprises but this is a pattern that has been repeated often enough.

De Bruyne signs with Serie A champion Napoli after 10 seasons at Man City
Two-time Premier League player of the season Kevin De Bruyne signed as a free agent with Serie A champion Napoli on Thursday. 'KING KEV IS HERE,' Napoli declared in a series of posts on X. The 33-year-old De Bruyne's contract at Manchester City expired. Napoli did not announce the length of his new contract. Around 150 fans welcomed De Bruyne on his arrival at a clinic in Rome for his medical. They chanted his name before also singing about Napoli being champion after the player had gone into the facility. At Napoli, De Bruyne will reunite with Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku. And follow in the footsteps of former Napoli great Dries Mertens, an ex-Belgium international. In Napoli's midfield, De Bruyne can team with Serie A player of the year Scott McTominay, who made a highly successful move from Manchester United. Known as one of soccer's most complete midfielders, De Bruyne was named the best player in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 and 2021-22 seasons. In 10 seasons at City, he helped the English club to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League trophy. The addition of De Bruyne may have been one of the reasons that convinced Napoli coach Antonio Conte to stay on for another season after considering rejoining Juventus.
