Spain replaces womens team coach Montse Tome with Sonia Bermudez

News1811-08-2025
Madrid, Aug 11 (AP) Spain's women's national team is making a coaching change two weeks after reaching the final of the European Championship.
Montse Tomé will not have her contract renewed and will be replaced by former player Sonia Bermúdez, the Spanish soccer federation said Monday.
Another former Spain player, Iraia Iturregi, was named the team's second coach.
The decision was made by the federation's board members after Tomé led Spain to the Euro 2025 final, which it lost to England in a penalty shootout on July 27.
Tomé replaced former coach Jorge Vilda following the team's World Cup title in 2023. She led Spain to the title of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. Her current contract with the national team was valid until the end of the month.
Tomé was the first woman to coach the senior women's team in Spain. She had been an assistant to Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted in the fallout of former federation president Luis Rubiales' nonconsensual kiss of player Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup's awards ceremony in Australia.
Spain has enjoyed some peace and stability since Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for the kiss that ignited one of the worst crises in Spanish soccer.
The outrage surrounding the scandal led to widespread changes and improved conditions for the women's national team. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols related to the women's squad.
Bermúdez was a Spain international and also played for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, among other clubs. She retired as a player in 2020.
Bermúdez had been coaching the youth squads of Spain's national team. She was currently with the under-23 squad.
The board that made the decision was composed of 30 members, half of them women. (AP) UNG

Asia Cup 2025 India to Pakistan: All squads announced so far, full schedule, venues and more

Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav (left) and chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Mumbai on Tuesday. (Photo: PTI) Team India became the second team after arch-rivals Pakistan to announce their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 tournament. The eight-team tournament is set to get underway in UAE from September 9 with neighbours India and Pakistan set to face off in Dubai on September 14. Defending champions India will be led by Suryakumar Yadav with Shubman Gill being named as his vice-captain. The Indian Test skipper makes a comeback into the T20I format after more than a year's time. 'Like I said, he (Shubman) was (the) vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket. That was after the last World Cup so even at that point, clearly we were thinking along those lines,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar told the media in Mumbai on Tuesday. Gill's return makes Sanju Samson's place in the playing 11 also doubtful with the vice-captain set to partner with Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order. 'Sanju was playing because Shubman and Yashasvi were not available at that point (and) so was Abhishek. (But) Abhishek's performances clearly makes it hard to leave him out. Plus, his bowling is handy,' Agarkar said. 'Now that he's available, at least he (Suryakumar) has two options. It's their headache to pick the batting lineup (now); ours was to pick the 15 and so. But we've got some real depth as far as T20 cricket is concerned and we are very happy with it,' he added. Meanwhile, Pakistan have dropped Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from their squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Both Babar and Rizwan are former T20I captains of Pakistan. Their team will be led by all-rounder Salman Ali Agha, who recently led Pakistan to a 2-1 series win over West Indies. Samson vs Gill: Shubman's rise leaves Sanju staring at uncertain future

The return of Shubman Gill as India's T20 vice-captain just six months before the World Cup has offered a glimpse into the team's long-term direction. While Rohit Sharma remains India's ODI captain and Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the T20 World Cup, the leadership baton is clearly moving towards Gill. What's the latest? Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the current selection committee appear aligned on a 'one-captain-for-all-formats' policy. If fitness and form hold, Gill is tipped to lead India at the 2027 World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe and at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, when cricket makes its Olympic debut. Gill's coronation on the horizon Gill had already been named T20 vice-captain after the last World Cup, only missing out due to Test commitments. His reinstatement suggests that his rise to captaincy is a matter of when, not if. Samson squeezed out of India's plans The biggest casualty of Gill's elevation is Sanju Samson. Despite hitting three centuries in T20 Internationals since the last World Cup, Samson's game is best suited for the top three slots, now locked by Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma. Abhishek's left-handed aggression and handy left-arm spin make him hard to ignore, while Tilak brings balance with his batting versatility, occasional off-spin, and exceptional fielding. Playing Samson would result in a middle order stacked with right-handers — Samson, Suryakumar, and Hardik Pandya — leaving the line-up one-dimensional. Samson vs Gill: What the numbers say Samson & Gill T20I stats comparison Sanju Samson Player Shubman Gill 42 Matches 21 38 Innings 21 861 Runs 578 25.32 Average 30.42 152.38 Strike Rate 139.27 3 100s 1 2 50s 3 111 Highest Score 126* Gambhir's influence and selection dynamics Agarkar clarified that while the team management will decide the playing XI, Gill's inclusion is almost certain. 'When they get to Dubai, they can decide according to the opposition and the conditions. But Shubman has been in great form anyway,' he said. Head coach Gautam Gambhir's philosophy also shines through the selection. Known for valuing left-right balance and multi-skilled players, Gambhir's preferences are reflected in the decisions on Abhishek and Tilak. Jitesh as stop-gap, Pant the long-term fix For now, Jitesh Sharma has been picked as wicketkeeper-finisher, a role that opens space for an extra all-rounder in the XI. But his position is clearly temporary. Once Rishabh Pant regains full fitness, he is expected to reclaim the gloves and strengthen India's middle order. This leaves Samson in a precarious position yet again. With Pant's return on the horizon and no clear slot in the top order, Samson may have to settle for the second wicketkeeper's role in back-to-back T20 World Cups. The bigger picture India's Asia Cup 2025 squad reflects both continuity and transition. Continuity, in the form of Suryakumar Yadav leading a settled T20 side, and transition, with Shubman Gill's coronation as India's next all-format captain-in-waiting. For Samson, however, the script looks less promising. His talent is unquestionable, but the current team balance and the looming return of Pant leave him battling for relevance at a time when Gill's rise is being scripted as Indian cricket's future.

'Agar Shreyas Iyer itna hi achha hai...': Abhishek Nayar straight-up blasts Ajit Agarkar on live TV, accused him of...

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar asked chief selector Ajit Agarkar the burning question about Shreyas Iyer's omission from the Asia Cup squad, as he was not even picked in the reserves. Iyer's omission from the Asia Cup squad has put the selection committee in the hot seat, especially after his stellar performances in IPL 2025. The Punjab Kings captain not only scored heavily but also led his team to the final, making a compelling case for his inclusion that the selectors ultimately overlooked. Abhishek Nayar slams Ajit Agarkar for Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from Asia Cup squad.(AFP, ANI and PTI Images) The 30-year-old has been out of the T20 scheme of things since December 2023, when he last played a T20I against Australia and scored a half-century. However, since then, he has not been called back into the T20I squad and missed the 2024 World Cup, too. In the past two IPL seasons, he guided Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings to the finals. He captained KKR to their third IPL championship and steered PBKS to their first final since 2014. Agarkar stated that Iyer hasn't done anything wrong, but he has to wait for his chance to get back into the T20I set-up. Nayar, who was sacked as India's assistant coach ahead of the England tour, asked Agarkar if he thinks Iyer is a strong contender and why he was not picked in the reserves for the Asia Cup. "I don't know, actually, I wanted to ask the question, aggar Shreyas Iyer itna hi accha hai toh reserve mei kyu nahi hai, (so how come he's not in your reserve players? If it's true that he is such a strong contender.) Sometimes, I mean, you know, selection meetings can be quite interesting and the discussion that happens in a selection meeting can be very interesting," Nayar said on Star Sports. Iyer was in outstanding form during IPL 2025, finishing as the sixth-highest run-scorer and delivering his best season yet. The Punjab Kings captain scored 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50.33, with a strike rate of 175.07, including six half-centuries. "Don't understand what reason can justify Shreyas Iyer's exclusion" Nayar expressed shock at Iyer's omission, insisting that no explanation could justify leaving him out of the 20-member squad. He added that the selectors' decision indicates players like Riyan Parag are being prioritised over Iyer in the pecking order. "But I can't fathom and I don't understand what reason can justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of that 20-member squad. I'm not going for 15, I'm going for that 20-member squad, which sort of tells and sends the message to Shreyas Iyer that you are not in a 20-man scheme of things, because even if things don't work out, you are not coming in the team. Either Riyan Parag is going to make the cut, or someone else is," he added. Iyer returned to India's ODI lineup during the England series earlier this year and was instrumental in the team's Champions Trophy victory. He stood out as the highest run-scorer for India, scoring 243 runs across five innings at an average of 48.60, including two half-centuries. However, he is still out of the Test and T20I scheme of things. Nayar didn't shy away from making a bold statement that Iyer is not liked by the decision makers as much as someone else. So that's the big question here is that maybe they are looking at him from a T20 point of view and any other point of view but I always say this that any selection is after a while, all players are top players, everyone is good then it's about who you like a little more than the other and that's sometimes, you know, the tipping point in a selection. And somewhere I just feel in that regard maybe Shreyas Iyer is not liked as much as someone else is, maybe," he concluded.
