Team India became the second team after arch-rivals Pakistan to announce their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 tournament. The eight-team tournament is set to get underway in UAE from September 9 with neighbours India and Pakistan set to face off in Dubai on September 14.
Defending champions India will be led by Suryakumar Yadav with Shubman Gill being named as his vice-captain. The Indian Test skipper makes a comeback into the T20I format after more than a year's time.
'Like I said, he (Shubman) was (the) vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket. That was after the last World Cup so even at that point, clearly we were thinking along those lines,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar told the media in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Gill's return makes Sanju Samson's place in the playing 11 also doubtful with the vice-captain set to partner with Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order.
'Sanju was playing because Shubman and Yashasvi were not available at that point (and) so was Abhishek. (But) Abhishek's performances clearly makes it hard to leave him out. Plus, his bowling is handy,' Agarkar said.
'Now that he's available, at least he (Suryakumar) has two options. It's their headache to pick the batting lineup (now); ours was to pick the 15 and so. But we've got some real depth as far as T20 cricket is concerned and we are very happy with it,' he added.
Meanwhile, Pakistan have dropped Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from their squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Both Babar and Rizwan are former T20I captains of Pakistan. Their team will be led by all-rounder Salman Ali Agha, who recently led Pakistan to a 2-1 series win over West Indies. All the squads announced for Asia Cup 2025

Home theatre: India's quest for glory

CHENNAI: IN the end, it was a squad with no surprises. As Neetu David, chair of the women's selection committee, sat alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur and announced the 15-member team for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, it seemed clear that India have opted for safety and balance in their quest to win the first global trophy. Explosive opener Shafali Verma did not make the cut while Renuka Singh Thankur who had been out of action due to injury was included in the squad for the ODIs against Australia as well as the global event that follows. Meanwhile, all-rounder Amanjot Kaur who is currently nursing a niggle at the BCCI Centre of Excellence has been rested for the Australia ODIs but is a part of the squad for the World Cup. Shafali's exclusion meant Pratika Rawal will continue to open with Smriti Mandhana. The Haryana batter was dropped from the side late last year before making waves in the domestic circuit. However, when Shafali was picked for the England T20Is and the India A tour of Australia, she failed to make an impact. Chief selector Neetu said that the youngster is in the scheme of things and they are hoping that she will have a long career with India. "Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system, it is not like that she's not. We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and garners experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-overs format in the future. We want a long career from Shafali," Neetu said at the press conference on Tuesday.

"What A Shame": BCCI Blasted For Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup Omission

Shreyas Iyer 's exclusion from India's Asia Cup squad has led to strong criticism of the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee. Speaking during the squad announcement press conference on Tuesday, Agarkar opened up on his snub, insisting that Iyer missed out due to abundance of talent in the format. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last year, Iyer led Punjab Kings (PBKS) all the way to the final in 2025, where they lost to Virat Kohli 's Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He also played a crucial role with the bat as India lifted the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "About Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance. We have got some serious options in T20 not the easiest squad to pick but good headache to have," said Agarkar. However, fans were not happy with the selectors ignoring Iyer, who was not even part of the five-man reserves for the tournament. - Most Runs in Champions Trophy - More Runs than Shubman Gill in WC - Reached IPL Finals being Top Run Scorer of Team Gautam Gambhir is just jealous of him. There is not even a single reason to drop Shreyas Iyer. — Selfless(@SelflessCricket) August 19, 2025 They didn't select Shreyas Iyer because he could have been a lethal threat to the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. When you can't compete with him , Eliminate him. Yet again politics won. — PIXEL77 (@SaviourShrey96) August 19, 2025 Setbacks came to him through injuries, politics, grudges but my man never bowed down to anything . I love you Shreyas Iyer — Parv (@ParvCryEmoji) August 19, 2025 Shreyas Iyer's reality right now - no spot in Tests, no spot in T20Is, not even in India A. Despite performing in domestics & IPL, he's still left waiting. Toughest phase of his career. — Atul (@tiwariaatul) August 19, 2025 What a shame, why Shreyas Iyer is not in the list. — Old मोंक (@mannudada111) August 19, 2025 Notably, Test skipper Shubman Gill was recalled to the side for the tournament, and also named vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel. Both Suryakumar Yadav and Agarkar said the Asia Cup signals the start of India's cycle for the next T20 World Cup. Agarkar was asked whether Gill's return to the squad as vice-captain is an indicator that he may take up the leadership mantle in the future. "He led in T20I (Zimbabwe), and in the Test team, he is already leading, and like Surya mentioned, he was vice-captain in the last T20I, so we obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He obviously exceeded all our expectations, with the kind of form that he showed with his bat, which is a great sign when there's so much pressure on you as a captain," said Agarkar.

MP pacer Kranti selected to Indian team for Women's World Cup cricket

Bhopal: Right-arm medium pacer Kranti Goud (21) from Madhya Pradesh has been selected for the Indian Women's cricket team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia from September 14 to 20 and the World Cup tournament from September 30 to November 2, both to be held in India. Goud gained recognition through her outstanding performance in the recently concluded ODI series against England. Hailing from the tribal region of Chhatarpur in Bundelkhand, Goud overcame significant challenges to succeed in cricket. The youngest of six siblings, she expressed her happiness over the selection: "I can't believe it. It was my dream to play for the country in the world cup." She added, "You were the first to inform me about my selection for the match against Australia. And, now my brother just informed me about my selection to the World Cup team," said Goud. In the ODI series against England in England, Goud took six wickets in her spell of 9.5 overs that steered team India to win the series by 2-1. Acknowledging Goud's contribution in the victory of the Indian team, her Captain Harmanpreet shared her 'Man of the Match' title with her. The right-arm medium-fast bowler made her ODI debut against Sri Lanka on May 11 and her T20 international debut against England on July 12, 2025. Kranti's coach Rajiv Bilthare recalled," She came in worn-out clothes and regular shoes. I gave her Rs 1,600 to buy spikes. This was her first time she went onto the field wearing proper cricket shoes." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
