Malegaon Blast Case Verdict To Be Delivered Today, 17 Years After The Deadly Explosion
Hearings and final arguments from both sides concluded on April 19, after which the court reserved its judgment.
The court said that although the hearings concluded in April, the immense volume of evidence, exceeding one lakh pages, necessitated additional time to thoroughly review all materials before delivering the verdict.
All the accused in the case have been instructed to be present in court on the day of the verdict. The court has also warned that action will be taken against any accused who is absent on that day.
A total of seven individuals are facing trial in the case, including Lt Col Prasad Purohit, former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, and retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay.
They have been charged under various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). All accused are currently out on bail.
The blast occurred on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon, a communally sensitive town in Maharashtra, during the holy month of Ramzan and just ahead of Navratri. The explosion claimed six lives and left over 100 people injured.
Over the course of a decade-long trial, the prosecution examined 323 witnesses, 34 of whom turned hostile.
Initially, the case was investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). However, in 2011, the probe was handed over to the NIA.
In 2016, the NIA submitted a charge sheet that cleared Pragya Singh Thakur and several other accused, citing insufficient evidence.
The verdict, which is going to be issued almost 17 years after the incident, is highly anticipated and is likely to have important legal and political consequences.

The CM also described the voter revision campaign as the foundation of democracy, emphasising that the task is not just an administrative process but also a political responsibility. He urged every BJP worker to ensure that no eligible voter is left out from their booths' voter list, saying adding young voters who have turned 18 is a sign of organisational maturity. On the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign from August 13 to 15, CM Yogi asserted that the campaign and the mantra of 'Swadeshi Products in Every Hand' are crucial steps towards realising the vision of a self-reliant India. He called upon the workers to join the campaign by hoisting the Triranga at their homes, taking selfies, engaging people and promoting local crafts by adopting swadeshi products like ODOP. This, he said, is the most powerful way to economically strengthen India and give a strong response to those who try to blackmail the nation. BJP state chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary said the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has become a powerful expression of national patriotism. 'This campaign aims to awaken every citizen's sense of pride, faith, and responsibility towards the nation,' he said. Chaudhary criticised the opposition for spreading lies and negativity while the BJP government worked tirelessly for public welfare. He urged BJP workers to engage wholeheartedly in the voter revision campaign, keeping in mind the upcoming elections. Also speaking on the occasion, deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya described the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign as a national revolution of patriotism. He said the campaign has become a powerful medium to connect every individual with reverence, faith, and self-pride towards the Triranga. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak said the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign is a national festival marking the spirit of patriotism. He emphasised that a BJP worker is not just a representative of the organisation but a carrier of the consciousness of nation-building. CPI(M) and Congress accuse BJP of claiming credit for the nuns' release to score political brownie points
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and Congress have accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to score brownie points with the sizeable Christian community in Kerala and the influential Church leadership in allegedly trying to rack up political credit for the release of two Kerala nuns on bail from a prison in BJP-ruled Chattissgarh on Saturday. The sisters, Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis, were remand prisoners in the Durg Central jail since their arrest on July 25 on charges of attempting to spirit out three women to Agra for conversion to Christianity. BJP State president Rajiv Chandrasekhar's comment that Congress and CPI(M) 'political theatre' in front of the Durg Central Prison had impeded the BJP-ruled Central and Chattissgarh State governments efforts to secure early bail for the sisters seemed to snuff out the geniality that politicians from Kerala briefly displayed while rubbing shoulders and distributing sweets to welcome the nuns at a convent in Chhattisgarh after their release on bail on Saturday. CPI(M) State Committee member John Brittas, MP, on Sunday stated that secular parties had championed the cause of justice for the sisters because they viewed the unjust arrest through the prism of the Constitution and not political expediency. Satheesan had earlier accused the BJP of shedding crocodile tears for the nuns while allowing the serious charges of human trafficking and forced conversion slapped on them to stay. For one, the Irinjalakuda diocese read out a pastoral letter in Churches on Sunday, claiming the Central and Chhattisgarh governments had done little for the nuns' release despite a national outcry. Irinjalakuda Diocese Bishop Mar Pauly Kannookadan dismissed the suggestion that some prelates, notably Archbishop Joseph Pamplany, praised Prime Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for intervening on the nuns' behalf. 'The Church has a clear political view. However, it is not politically partisan,' he added.

Offence by Prajwal Revanna could be construed as offence against society at large: Court
The Special Court of Sessions for criminal cases against former and present MPs and MLAs while awarding 'imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life' to former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, said that the offence in this case 'could be construed as an offence committed towards the society at large wherein women are worshiped'. In his order, judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat further said that 'the question of commission of an offence by a legislator is a serious aspect'. Terming the case, where the victim is a former help at the accused's family farm as a 'David vs Goliath' battle, Mr. Bhat said that 'committing sexual offences against a maid and other women in society by showing disdain towards them due to their economic condition is a grave offence' and that 'the act of committing forcible sexual intercourse on the victim repeatedly would be more than committing of murder'. Quoting the Sanskrit saying 'Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha...', the judge said that 'dharma should not be destroyed so that we may not be destroyed as a consequence thereof' and awarded the maximum punishment under Section 376(2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman) of Indian Penal Code for Prajwal Revanna. The judgment rejects appeals for leniency by the convict's counsel on the grounds that he has to look after his former Prime Minister grandfather and aging parents and that he had no criminal antecedents, among other grounds. Victim's statement key to conviction The 480-page judgment examines the victim's statement at length and considers depositions by multiple witnesses, including her sister who was working with her and other family members, Prajwal's driver Karthik, who allegedly copied the explicit clips from the MP's phone, to corroborate the same and rejected defence's arguments that there were contradictions in the same. The defence had argued that the victim had never worked at the Gannikada farmhouse and it did not belong to the Revanna family in 2021, when the crime was committed. It further argued that the victim was unable to tell the date of the crimes. However, the court concludes that the depositions by Karthik, the victim's sister and the victim's son studying at a school in Gannikada for three years, proved that she worked there. Further, the defence's contradictory stands itself indicated that they accepted that she worked at the farm, the court concludes. Further, the farmhouse belonged to Bhavani Revanna's brother Prakash since 2015 and was bought by Suraj Revanna in October, 2021 and the family, including Prajwal was using the same, the court concludes through multiple witnesses. Regarding the dates of the two sexual assaults, the court concludes that the victim being a rustic villager, also an illiterate, though may not have told the exact dates, was consistent with the timeline of events, as during COVID-19 lockdown and four years before she lodged the complaint. The court also quotes the statement of the victim's sister who was with her when she was abused at Basavanagudi, though the victim did not confide in her then. The sister told the court that on the third day of their visit to Basavanagudi, where the victim was raped, her sister was dull and upon enquiry, she was silently uttering that they cannot do anything. The court said this 'would become relevant because of the fact of the behaviour of the victim immediately after the incident'. Corroborative evidence Apart from the victim's statement, the judgment further relies on two scientific evidences. 'The prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt about the commission of the incident by placing corroborative evidence of the scientific experts in the form of DNA Examination Report wherein the stains found on the sari and other clothes of the victim matched with the DNA profiling of accused Prajwal Revanna. The prosecution has also proved the digital records in the form of videos which were circulated were not edited/morphed and also the male and female voice found in the videos matched with the sample voice of accused Prajwal Revanna and the victim,' the judgment said.
