Kaizer Chiefs plot stunning move for ex-academy star in Europe

Kaizer Chiefs have set their sights on an unexpected yet familiar target as they continue to rebuild their squad ahead of the new season. With time running out before pre-season begins, Amakhosi have identified a European-based midfielder, who once rose through their own youth ranks, as a serious option to bolster their attack.
Mihlali Mayambela, currently playing in Cyprus with Aris Limassol, has caught the attention of Kaizer Chiefs' scouting and football departments. The club reportedly views the 28-year-old as a strong alternative after struggling to secure the signature of preferred right winger Oswin Appollis.
A source revealed that Chiefs may look to bring Mayambela back to Naturena, capitalising on his links to the club's development system.
'From what we know is that Mihlali (Mayambela) is apparently also interested in returning home and to play in the PSL. The people at Kaizer Chiefs know him very well as he was in their youth development structures before. They know what he can bring to the team in terms of attacking options. For now it is believed that it's a recommendation from the football department. And the scouting and recruiting department as well. They are happy with him,' the source said, according to Soccer Laduma .
Mayambela enjoyed a solid campaign with Aris Limassol in the 2024/2025 season. Netting five goals and providing six assists across 31 matches in all competitions. His form in Europe, combined with his international experience for Bafana Bafana, including participation at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, makes him a highly attractive option for the Soweto giants.
Bringing Mayambela back into the fold could signal a shift in strategy for Chiefs. As they attempt to merge youth development roots with international pedigree. If the deal materialises, Amakhosi could not only gain a dynamic attacking option. But also reconnect with a player who understands the club's culture and expectations.
Will Kaizer Chiefs drop Apollis' pursuit for Mayambela instead?

Kaizer Chiefs clean-up: Full list of departed players

Kaizer Chiefs have released four players this past week as part of their efforts to revamp the team for next season. The players released are Edmilson Dove, Sabelo Radebe, Njabulo Blom, and Ranga Chivaviro. On Tuesday, Amakhosi announced that the Mozambican defender, Edmilson Dove, is no longer contracted to the team after three years with the club. 'Kaizer Chiefs and defender Edmilson Dove will part ways when his contract expires at the end of June. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Edmilson for his contributions to the Club and wish him all the best in his future endeavours,' Chiefs said in a statement. Last Wednesday, the club parted ways with Radebe, Blom, and Chivaviro. Some fans were surprised by Chivaviro's departure, especially considering how effective he was after Nasreddine Nabi took charge in July. 'Kaizer Chiefs will not be extending striker Ranga Chivaviro's contract when it expires at the end of the month,' the statement read. 'The Limpopo-born attacker joined Amakhosi from Marumo Gallants for the 2023/24 season on a two-year deal. He scored nine goals and provided one assist in 45 official matches while wearing the Chiefs colours over two seasons.' Kaizer Chiefs signed a total of 10 players last season but failed to improve as they finished ninth in the Betway Premiership last season. The team is set to jet off to Europe in the coming weeks for their pre-season training. Kaizer Chiefs close in on defender: Verbal agreement reached

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with right-back Mhleli Mabuza, signalling a significant step in their pursuit of defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2025/2026 season. Mabuza, currently plying his trade at Louletano Desportos Clube in Portugal, sparked intense speculation after he joined Chiefs for training at the close of the 2024/2025 campaign. His arrival coincided with the club's broader plans to overhaul their defensive structure. Chiefs' coaching team closely assessed Mabuza during his trial, and while the club initially hesitated to make a formal offer, their stance has now evolved. Since 27 May 2025, talks between both parties have progressed. A reliable source confirmed the shift. 'Chiefs were weighing up their options. There was no formal offer for Mabuza initially,' the source said. 'He trained with the team, and the technical staff have had a chance to look at him, but now they have a verbal agreement.' Mabuza's representatives remain confident that Chiefs will convert their verbal commitment into a concrete deal. The 24-year-old defender reportedly impressed during his stint at Naturena, and his camp believes he fits perfectly into the club's long-term strategy. They said the club is fine-tuning its squad plans. And that Mabuza stands a strong chance of becoming a key addition to the defensive line. With pre-season preparations looming, Kaizer Chiefs look set to wrap up this deal swiftly. Which would ensure the player integrates early and contributes meaningfully in the upcoming term. Will Mhleli Mabuza be a good addition to Kaizer Chiefs next season? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
