Fatally Injured Teenager Is Discovered on Top of a N.Y.C. Subway Car

New York Times04-07-2025
The deadly trend among New York City youth of riding on top of speeding trains, known as subway surfing, may have claimed another victim on Friday.
An unresponsive and injured boy, 15, was found on the roof of a 7 train at Queensboro Plaza, in Queens, around 2:45 a.m., according to the police. The authorities transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death is still under investigation, the police said. But it appeared to be a failed attempt at the dangerous, thrill-seeking practice of train surfing, which has plagued the city for almost as long as there has been a subway system.
'This was as avoidable as it is tragic,' said Demetrius Crichlow, the president of New York City Transit, the division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that oversees the subway system. 'I implore family, friends, teachers and anyone else who knows children that are even thinking about riding outside subway cars to persuade them it's not some video game — it's suicidal.'
In recent years, the number of fatalities linked to the practice has climbed as a new generation of daredevils has tried its luck, spurred on by videos of subway surfers on social media, transit and law enforcement officials have said.
The M.T.A. has been working with social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, to remove subway surfing footage. As of mid-June, more than 1,800 videos had been taken down, according to a news release from the authority last month.

Queens family wants justice after son killed in stray bullet shooting in Puerto Rico

A Queens family is mourning the death of their son after he was shot and killed in Puerto Rico over the weekend. Kevin Mares, 25, was visiting the island with friends to attend a Bad Bunny concert. Early Sunday morning, Mares, his girlfriend and a friend ventured out to a nightclub in the coastal community known as La Perla. Police say several people near Mares started arguing, then someone pulled out a gun and opened fire. Three people were struck, including Mares. He was hit in the abdomen and rushed to a hospital, where he died. The other two victims remain hospitalized. As of now, no arrests have been made. His heartbroken parents spoke to CBS News New York. They said Mares lived with them and his 15-year-old brother in their East Elmhurst home. Mares was studying to be a veterinarian, and his parents say when he wasn't studying, he was working two part-time jobs. His family says Mares was a big fan of Bad Bunny, and he, his girlfriend and his friend had been looking forward to their trip to Puerto Rico for months. Mares' parents are asking anybody with information about the shooting to come forward. "We want justice," mother Sandra Mares said. The family is working with local authorities in Puerto Rico to bring Kevin Mares' body home to Queens so they can begin making funeral arrangements.

Pedestrian dead in suspected DUI crash in downtown Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A pedestrian is dead following a suspected DUI crash in the downtown Las Vegas area, according to police. It happened on Friday around 10:20 p.m. along 1st Street and East Ogden Avenue. Police said a 2020 Cadillac Escalade was stopped when an altercation broke out between the driver and another man. Video from the scene then shows the Escalade reversing from a stop as a pedestrian walks behind it. The driver, identified as Kevin Vo, 45, backed into the pedestrian, knocking him to the ground, police said. Vo then pulled forward, hitting the pedestrian a second time, police said. As Vo continued west, he hit two yellow guard poles, and the vehicle came to a final stop after rolling backwards. The pedestrian was taken to a nearby hospital, and despite all life-saving measures, the 56-year-old man was pronounced dead. Police said the driver stayed at the scene and showed signs of impairment. Court records show Vo is facing one count of reckless driving and one count of DUI of alcohol and or substance, resulting in death. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
