Mallorca's beach businesses are warning of a brutal summer season, with earnings plummeting as the backlash against mass tourism intensifies both in Spain and abroad.
According to the Association of Temporary Services Concessions and Operations in the Maritime-Terrestrial Public Domain of Mallorca (Adopuma), beach bars, parasol hire companies, and water activity operators have taken a hit of around 20 per cent in July compared to last summer, and things aren't looking any better as August rolls on.
In a gloomy statement, the group blamed poor spring weather, spiralling costs, and falling demand for beach services.
But they say that increasingly aggressive rhetoric from anti-tourism campaigners is pushing the island's economy to the brink. Adopuma president Onofre Fornés said 'irresponsible negative messages against tourism' for the downturn.
Beach tourists, the bread and butter of Mallorca's daytime economy, are no longer spending like they used to, he added.
He said: 'Reduced income, higher operating costs and subdued demand for key services, such as sun loungers and deckchairs, have affected turnover, for example in areas such as Playa de Muro and Can Picafort.'
Many have been priced out of extras like parasols and cocktails after shelling out more than ever on flights and hotels.
According to the association, restaurants are underperforming, beach bar takings are down, and occupancy rates have stayed low even into early August.
Staff wages and the cost of goods have both gone up, chewing into profits and leaving many businesses worried about survival, the group warned.
Operators in resorts like Cala Millor say tourists are holding off on spending until the very last day of their holidays, a far cry from the more carefree attitude seen in pre-inflation years.
Germans in particular, one of Mallorca's biggest markets, have become noticeably more cautious.
Adopuma is now urging the government to act fast, capping prices, stamping out anti-tourism sentiment, and ensuring that Mallorca remains affordable for the mid-budget visitors who keep the island ticking.
Protests against overtourism erupted across the Balearics, the Canaries and mainland Spain earlier this year.
Tens of thousands marched through Palma in July, holding banners that read 'Your luxury, our misery' and demanding curbs on tourist numbers, cruise ships and short-term lets.
Local businesses were targeted with stickers, while demonstrators blocked roads and disrupted holidaymakers' plans.
Protesters in Barcelona used water pistols to spray unsuspecting tourists in the city centre.
Others slapped 'Tourist go home' stickers on restaurants and hotel doors.
In one of the city's most symbolic demonstrations yet, activists blocked access to hotels and confronted diners in popular neighbourhoods.
In Palma, tensions boiled over when a British tourists were surrounded at a restaurant by angry protesters shouting 'go home' and 'go to hell '.
One protester was seen brandishing an axe, and police had to intervene as the group surged towards diners.
The violent scenes were widely condemned by politicians, but activists say they are the result of years of frustration over overcrowded streets, surging rents, and wages that haven't kept pace with the cost of living.
Some neighbourhoods have put up graffiti telling foreigners to 'go home', while local campaigners accuse foreign residents of pricing Mexicans out of housing and services.
The protests were not only confined to Spain - they spread across Europe with scenes in Portugal and Spain.
In Mexico, protesters smashed up shops and approached foreigners, telling them to leave.

Aug 8 (Reuters) - Tesla will streamline its AI chip research to focus on its development of inference chips used to run AI models and make real-time decisions, CEO Elon Musk said, after a media report he had ordered the closure of the in-house Dojo supercomputer team. Bloomberg News on Thursday cited people familiar with the matter as saying Musk had ordered the Dojo team to be disbanded, with team leader Peter Bannon departing the company. The Dojo supercomputer was designed around custom training chips to process vast amounts of data and video from Tesla EVs to train the automaker's autonomous-driving software. "It doesn't make sense for Tesla to divide its resources and scale two quite different AI chip designs," Musk said in an X post late on Thursday. "The Tesla AI5, AI6 and subsequent chips will be excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training. All effort is focused on that," he said, without directly mentioning Dojo. Tesla has been undergoing a wide-ranging restructuring over the past year, with its share price slumping as sales of its EVs were hit by rising competition and a backlash by European consumers in particular against Musk's political views. The company has seen multiple executive departures and cut thousands of jobs, and redirected its focus to AI-driven self-driving technology and robotics, with Musk pursuing an integration strategy across his tech business empire. Musk has previously said that next-generation AI5 chips would be produced at the end of 2026 and announced last month a $16.5 billion deal to source AI6 chips from Samsung Electronics ( opens new tab, without providing a production timeline. By It has been a first 200 days that experts say is the most consequential start to a presidential term for 92 years. That was when Franklin D, Roosevelt set out to save America from the Great Depression and get the country back to work. When President Donald Trump entered the White House on January 20, 2025 he faced a struggling economy, an immigration disaster, and brewing trouble in Europe and the Middle East. Trump dealt with it all by throwing the political rulebook out the window - he abandoned free trade, upended relations with America's allies, eviscerated his own government bureaucracy, and bombed Iran . All of those measures, according to the naysayers, should have led to disaster. Instead, Trump's supporters are doing victory laps and he is forging ahead at breakneck speed. 'You've not seen anything like this in almost anyone's lifetime. You have to go back to March 4, 1933 (the inauguration of Roosevelt) to have an administration so active and aggressive, and successful in promoting its agenda,' high-profile pollster Frank Luntz told the Daily Mail. ''John Kennedy getting elected in 1960 was a very big deal, but nothing compared to what Trump has done in his first 200 days. He really has remade the governing process. Trump has reset what is acceptable in American politics. It's not that he's played the game better, he's changed the game. He's changed the world. We've never had anyone like him.' For allies the tone was set by J.D. Vance's speech in Munich on February 14 during which the norms of the transatlantic alliance were, as one eminent European put it, 'smashed to smithereens.' The velocity at which things traveled in this second term is just unprecedented. He's basically reshaped trade. He's reshaped immigration. I mean huge, huge issues which impact so many people on a daily basis. The President's done what most people thought could not be done. 'There were so many prognosticators of doom on the other side who have been affected by TDS (Trump derangement Syndrome,) who said that if the President does X, then Y is going to happen and the sky will fall. The President has done X, and not only has Y not happened, there's been a positive outcome. However, as Trump hits the 200 day mark, he faces a new potential showdown with Vladimir Putin and uncertainty over his trade war with China. And another problem looms over everything - the specter of Jeffrey Epstein. Urban believes the brouhaha will pass, like similar frenzies over the JFK assassination and UFO sightings. 'I think there's no there, there,' he said. 'I don't believe there's some magical list that's people who drink children's blood that's going to satiate anybody.' But the issue threatens to cast a shadow over the next 200 days as Democrats look set to up their attacks on Trump for not releasing the full 'Epstein files,' leading to wild conspiracy theories relating to the late pedophile billionaire. "Well, the Democrats have to. What else are they going to have to propel them back to power?' Larry Sabato, Director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, told the Daily Mail. 'What else do they have unless the economy goes into recession, or has a significant measurable slowdown, or there's stagflation. They have to continue to criticize and they want to take a subject that people seem to care about, that they think this is dividing the MAGA base. 'And it is on that issue. But then Trump's base comes right back together for anything that Trump tells them they should be for. It doesn't change their votes, doesn't change their determination to see him succeed in everything he wants to do.' The Epstein issue is resonating with voters but not impacting Trump's support, he suggested. 'I've already had so many people write to me and say to me in a grocery store, "Look, I'm very upset that they're not releasing all that, shame on Trump for not doing it." But then the next sentence is "I just love this guy, he's been the greatest president of my lifetime." They don't care. So what?' Sabato said the solidity of Trump's base means he will usually poll above 40 percent and that is 'plenty good to run a presidency. You don't need to be over 50 percent.' 'In terms of energy and achievement I would rate the 200 days very highly compared to other presidencies. Now, the other scale would be very, very different, say, wisdom or attention to the Constitution and the customs and traditions that have made America work. And I would give it an F minus. 'Almost every day, we seem to be taking another step down the road to the most extreme polarization we've had since the Civil War.' Trump's success, while celebrated by his supporters, has also created a potential problem for Republicans down the road. according to Luntz, who conducts weekly focus groups with voters. It has resulted in two hugely divergent views of his presidency. Many Republicans are almost euphoric, but many Democrats are more alienated than ever. 'It has been a tale of two presidencies. Those that voted for Donald Trump are ecstatic. He's done everything he promised to do and more. He's done it in a bold and way, and they approved of just about everything,' said Luntz. 'For those who didn't vote for him, it's even worse than they were expecting. They've come to realize that everything he said, he meant.' Trump is a '49 percent president' because he has not added to his support in office, Luntz said. 'This is the difference between him and Ronald Reagan. Reagan was elected with 50 percent of the vote. Trump was elected with 50 percent of the vote. Reagan went out of his way to expand it, and he was successful in doing it. Trump is not seeking to expand his coalition.' That doesn't matter for a president who will not be seeking reelection, but it matters a lot for his successor, and also in the 2026 midterms. 'There is blowback, and that blowback is significant, and the pendulum, when it swings back, is going to swing back with velocity,' Luntz said. 'Eventually, when it's the other side that will win, because it will happen, there's going to be a level of retribution that we haven't seen, that I think is very dangerous for the political system.'

A European holiday hotspot is struggling to balance mass tourism and the needs of local residents. Venice has long been a popular destination for holidaymakers to explore, whether during a day trip or a longer stay. Around 30 million people visit the Italian city each year and a daily €5 (£4.35) tourist tax for day-trippers was introduced last year to help tackle the overtourism. The charge was brought in as a trial in April and was payable over 54 selected days until July 27. Officials said that the charge, payable by visitors who arrived for the day between 8.30am and 4pm, was paid by 720,000 compared to 485,000 last year. However, annoyed Italians have voiced their views on the issue and many now feel overtourism is ruining the city and the tax may not be that effective. In a Reddit post from last year, someone spoke out about the tax and penned: 'How is the €5 tax supposed to help against tourist overcrowding in Venice? 'Oh no, I spent hundreds of euros on travel and hotels to get there, but €5 is too much! I'm going back to Indonesia!'' Many replied, airing similar grievances with how the problem is being handled. One Italian described the tax as 'despicable' and urged for a different approach. 'I find it a little despicable to pay to visit a city,' they said. 'A limited number of visitors would have made more sense, as Venice, being unique, certainly can't handle that impressive number of people. 'But if Venice's problem is overcrowding, primarily from foreign tourists, what do you solve by charging an entrance fee to the Italian minority who visit?' Someone else sarcastically argued: 'It's needed because Venice is a real city, it's not an attraction park where you pay a ticket to enter... Ah no wait.' Meanwhile, others complained of how 'disgusting' the city has become. 'Yes, the residents are virtually extinct. Mass tourism has killed the city,' one person said. 'If they wanted to manage overcrowding, they could implement a name-based reservation system,' someone else grumbled. In June, Setrak Tokatzian, president of the Venice's historic Piazza San Marco Association of small businesses, spoke out about the tax. He urged council chiefs to up the tax to an eye-watering €100 (£87). Mr Tokatzian, who runs a jewellery shop in the heart of Venice, said it would be worth it because many of the 30 million people who visit the city each year are lowering the tone of the city.
