Cowboys eliminated from tourney
This is not the ending they expected.
Just a month after the Cowboys were fighting for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and a league title, their season is over.
McNeese State's hopes of a postseason revival ended Friday afternoon at Alumni Field in Hammond.
Top-seeded Southeastern knocked the Cowboys out of the Hammond Bracket with a 7-4 victory in the first elimination game. Southeastern (xx-xx), the Southland Conference co-champs, will move on to play the loser of Friday night's game between New Orleans and Northwestern State.
Fifth-seeded McNeese (32-17) will start thinking about next year after going 0-2 in Hammond.
'Not the type of ending we expected,' said McNeese head coach Justin Hill.
Just 19 days ago, the Cowboys were alone in first place. They finished the season winning just two of their last 11 games as injuries to the pitching staff piled up.
The Lions scored four runs after two were out in the top of the ninth, as the McNeese bullpen faltered for the second straight day. It really hurts how this fell apart.
With the score tied, Jake Blackwell struck out the first two Lions in the ninth and jumped ahead of pinch-hitter Jade Hall before hitting him. That started a string of trouble for McNeese.
Parker Coley followed with an infield single hit behind third, and Hall raced to third.
Coley raced home with the run to break a 3-3 tie when McNeese first baseman Marc Heushon lost track of him.
The Lions added on three more runs, which proved huge when Cowboy Larry Edwards homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth. McNeese put the next two runners on base, but could do no more damage off SELA closer Brady St. Pierre.
Pierre, the league's Relief Pitcher of the Year, worked the final 3⅔ innings, allowing just the one run for the win to improve to 2-1. Blackwell gave up six runs, four earned, in 2⅔ to take the loss, dropping to 3-3.
The Lions started their comeback with three runs in the seventh to tie the game at three. Payton Woods' two-out, two-run single was the big hit and came after McNeese starter Cooper Golden had worked his way out of trouble in the sixth. The lefty retired TJ Salvaggio on a ground ball to third with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Golden was able to get out of the trouble despite suffering what appeared to be a cramp in his left leg. Golden worked six innings, scattering eight hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
A slight change in the batting order led to a fast start for McNeese. Bryce Jones stepped into the leadoff spot and promptly singled on the first pitch from SELA starter Lakin Polk, who lasted just one inning, allowing six hits.
The first five hitters reached for the Cowboys, who scored three times to take a 3-0 lead.
Marc Brousseau tripled and Larry Edwards doubled to lead the attack.

Ahmed Hassanein out 'for a while with pec injury, could miss entire rookie season
The Detroit Lions rookie class took another unfortunate bite from the injury bug in Saturday's preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins. Sixth-round defensive end Ahmed Hassanein suffered a chest injury during the game. No. 61 collided with a Dolphins player and immediately grabbed at his upper body in obvious pain. Lions head coach Dan Campbell updated Hassanein's status before Monday's practice. "Amhed's going to be down for a while. He's got a pec," Campbell stated. He later added that the team has not yet made a decision on placing Hassanein on I.R., but "it's tbd (to be determined)" if Hassanein will be able to play at all this season. It's a blow to the development of Hassanein, a high-energy power end who is still learning the finer nuances of football after coming to the game later than most. He grew up in Egypt as a CrossFit competitor before moving back to his native California during high school. Hassanein had primarily been working with the third-team defense, with some second-team reps as well. He was expected to make the final roster. Hassanein is in the NFL's International Player Pathway program and doesn't count against Detroit's roster limits. He is the second member of the Lions draft class to suffer a serious injury before the preseason ends. Seventh-round safety Dan Jackson was lost for the season two weeks earlier. Fifth-round OL Miles Frazier remains on the PUP list and has yet to practice.

Cowboys to sign former Broncos' third runder, UFL champion to help injury-riddled position
NFL Networks Tom Pelissero broke the news that DC Defender and 2025 UFL Champion Michael Ojemudia intends to sign with Dallas to help with depth as the team maneuvers through a slew of injuries at the cornerback position. The veteran cornerback was selected in third-round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos, and spent time with Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus while the pair were in Chicago in 2022. The former Hawkeye played in all 16 games as a rookie and started 11 games for Denver. Injuries would limit him to just 10 regular season appearances form 2021 -2022 which led him to find refuge in the spring league. Ojemudia played in nine games for the Defenders finishing with 20 total tackles, four pass break-ups and had one interception. Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs missed the final six games of the 2024 season with a knee injury, and has yet to practice with the team this offseason. Third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr. has also yet to make his debut as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in college. CB's Josh Butler and Caelon Carson are also dealing with injuries that may threaten their start of the upcoming season.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy stays cool as Cowboys face uncertainty with new players and coaches
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy remains cool, even as the pressure rises. Perhaps that's because before his Cowboys finished 3-9 last season, he reached a rare level of consistency, posting winning records every year from 2006 to 2023. Gundy's outsized personality is only eclipsed by his overall record of 169-88 in 20 seasons. The 58-year-old Gundy this year has a team returning just one starter on offense and three on defense, which could be good or bad depending on perspective. Most of the 60-plus newcomers are experienced transfers. He also overhauled his coaching staff, hiring new offensive and defensive coordinators. 'I'm not concerned,' Gundy said. 'There are a bunch of guys running around and making plays, and the talent level is fine. The uncertainty is going to work in the morning and not knowing exactly what is going to happen.' Things appeared promising for the Cowboys to perhaps have one of their best seasons a year ago before injuries and erratic play left Gundy with perhaps his most disappointing team. Now, the Cowboys will try to bounce back with a new quarterback — holdover Zane Flores or transfer Hauss Hejny. Flores, a freshman from Gretna, Nebraska, redshirted two years ago and missed last season due to injury. Hejny played for new offensive coordinator Doug Meacham at TCU last season and is known primarily as a dangerous runner. 'We don't have anybody that's thrown a pass in a game at this level, so there's a lot of uncertainty,' Gundy said. 'Both guys are doing well, but they've got a long way to go, and we're learning about them just as well as they're learning the system.' Replacing Gordon Ollie Gordon II ran for more than 2,900 yards in his college career and won the Doak Walker Award for the nation's top running back two seasons ago. Now that he's playing for the Miami Dolphins, there is a scramble to earn carries. There appear to be capable replacements. Trent Howland, Sesi Vailahi and Rodney Fields Jr. are back after getting action last season. Kalib Hicks, a transfer from Oklahoma and Freddie Brock, a transfer from Georgia State, are in the mix. New coordinators Gundy hired Meacham as offensive coordinator and Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator. Meacham, a former Oklahoma State offensive lineman, was on the Cowboys' coaching staff from 2005 to 2012. He was an offensive coordinator in 2021 at TCU, and he remained on the Horned Frogs' staff through last season. Grantham has been defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL and for Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State and Florida at the college level. He most recently was a defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints last season. QB coach New quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns spent the latter part of last season as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oklahoma. Johns also has FBS assistant coaching stops at Duke, Memphis, Texas Tech, Western Michigan, Indiana and Northwestern. Gundy, a former QB himself and not easily impressed, has great respect for Johns. 'There weren't many guys when I started calling around and asking about guys -- two or three of them in the country that I thought would be capable of doing it,' Gundy said. Terrill Davis Oklahoma State might have another breakout receiving star. Davis, a redshirt senior, was an AP Division II All-American at Central Oklahoma last season after logging 1,609 yards receiving. Gundy said Davis has adjusted quickly to the new surroundings. 'He has done really well,' Gundy said. 'I would say he has exceeded my expectations just based on my history, and he is very mature.' Schedule The Cowboys open on at night at home against Tennessee-Martin. The next week, they'll find out what they've got when they visit No. 7 Oregon. Three of the final five games are against ranked opponents – at Texas Tech on Oct. 25, at home against Kansas State on Nov. 15 and at home against Iowa State on Nov. 22.
