Cowboys eliminated from tourney

Cooper Golden threw six shoutout innings Friday but it wasn't enough for the Cowboys. (Matthew Bonnette/McNeese Athletics) This is not the ending they expected. Just a month after the Cowboys were fighting for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and a league title, their season is over. McNeese State's hopes of a postseason revival ended Friday afternoon at Alumni Field in Hammond. Top-seeded Southeastern knocked the Cowboys out of the Hammond Bracket with a 7-4 victory in the first elimination game. Southeastern (xx-xx), the Southland Conference co-champs, will move on to play the loser of Friday night's game between New Orleans and Northwestern State. Fifth-seeded McNeese (32-17) will start thinking about next year after going 0-2 in Hammond. 'Not the type of ending we expected,' said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. Just 19 days ago, the Cowboys were alone in first place. They finished the season winning just two of their last 11 games as injuries to the pitching staff piled up. The Lions scored four runs after two were out in the top of the ninth, as the McNeese bullpen faltered for the second straight day. It really hurts how this fell apart. With the score tied, Jake Blackwell struck out the first two Lions in the ninth and jumped ahead of pinch-hitter Jade Hall before hitting him. That started a string of trouble for McNeese. Parker Coley followed with an infield single hit behind third, and Hall raced to third. Coley raced home with the run to break a 3-3 tie when McNeese first baseman Marc Heushon lost track of him. The Lions added on three more runs, which proved huge when Cowboy Larry Edwards homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth. McNeese put the next two runners on base, but could do no more damage off SELA closer Brady St. Pierre. Pierre, the league's Relief Pitcher of the Year, worked the final 3⅔ innings, allowing just the one run for the win to improve to 2-1. Blackwell gave up six runs, four earned, in 2⅔ to take the loss, dropping to 3-3. The Lions started their comeback with three runs in the seventh to tie the game at three. Payton Woods' two-out, two-run single was the big hit and came after McNeese starter Cooper Golden had worked his way out of trouble in the sixth. The lefty retired TJ Salvaggio on a ground ball to third with the bases loaded to end the inning. Golden was able to get out of the trouble despite suffering what appeared to be a cramp in his left leg. Golden worked six innings, scattering eight hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen. A slight change in the batting order led to a fast start for McNeese. Bryce Jones stepped into the leadoff spot and promptly singled on the first pitch from SELA starter Lakin Polk, who lasted just one inning, allowing six hits. The first five hitters reached for the Cowboys, who scored three times to take a 3-0 lead. Marc Brousseau tripled and Larry Edwards doubled to lead the attack.

Cowboys host SFA in key series

Larry Edwards and the Cowboys host SFA this weekend in key series. (Kirk Meche/Special to the American Press) The Cowboys are hoping this weekend's series at Joe Miller Ballpark is not the final home games of their season. With just two weekends of Southland Conference play remaining, McNeese State opens another critical three-game series in its hopes of not only hosting one of the two playoff pods but winning the regular season title. 'There is still a lot of big baseball to be played and a lot can happen,' said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. 'I think we will know exactly what needs to be done after this weekend, but we have to take care of our business first.' The Cowboys host Stephen F. Austin starting Friday at 6 p.m. The Lumberjacks are desperate for wins as they are currently one of three teams not in the postseason picture. SFA is just 4-20 in the league and four games back of the eighth and final playoff spots. The Lumberjacks are 13-29 overall and just 4-15 on the road. McNeese is 21-5 at home. The Cowboys are currently in third place, with a record of 17-7 and 30-11 overall. They have, however, lost four of their last five overall, including two straight last weekend at Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Those losses knocked them out of first place and a game behind Southeastern. UTRGV is second in the standings, a half-game between the two. Rio Grande has played three more games and will finish their conference season this weekend. 'That will tell us likely what we need to do the final weekend,' said Hill. 'It is exciting to be in the race this late. 'If you told us going into the season we would be a game back with six to play, we would have taken it.' The title race is as close as it could be with six teams, over half the league of 11, still in the hunt. Only three games separate those five clubs. Of the group, Northwestern State is playing a nonconference series before finishing the following weekend at home against McNeese. Lamar, in fourth place, is at Southeastern for a set while UTRGV is at Incarnate Word. Sixth-place Houston Christian hosts Corpus Christi, having lost five of its last six league games. The Cowboys know they can't get caught up in everything around them and can't get caught watching the scoreboard. 'We are going to stick with how we have gone about it all year,' said Hill. 'We've done a real good job taking care of our business and doing what is in front of us. We have enjoyed the process and are not about to change.' Conner Westenburg leads the country in triples with nine and is second in the league in runs scored with 55 to lead the McNeese offense. Hill said he would play this weekend as if it were a tournament, meaning he only named a starter for Game 1. Lefty Cooper Golden gets the ball to open the series with a 3-2 record and a 5.66 earned run average. The rest of the staff will be used as needed according to Hill. Friday's game will also be Jace Peterson Night, where the first 100 fans in attendance will get a 5×7 card of the former McNeese and major leaguer. Game 2 will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday will also be Senior Day as the Cowboys will honor players in what they hope won't be their last game in their home park.

Cowboys host Houston

Larry Edwards rips a 3-run double in the first meeting against Houston. (Dena Matzenbacher/McNeese Athletics) The Cowboys will try to rebound from a pair of tough losses when they host Houston Tuesday night at Joe Miller Ballpark. After taking the weekend opener at Texas-Rio Grande Valley, McNeese State dropped the last two contests of the critical Southland Conference series Saturday and Sunday. Twice, UTRGV rallied to beat the Cowboys, who fell from first to third place in the process with six league games remaining. McNeese (30-10, 17-7) is a half game out of second behind UTRGV and a full game behind Southeastern for first. The Cowboys do hold the tiebreaker over SELA in the race for one of the two home sites when the postseason begins. 'We are disappointed in the results but not in our effort or preparation,' said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. 'They beat us in two big innings on the weekend, that's it.' The Cowboys look to get back on track at home, where they are 21-4, as they take on the 23-20 Cougars. McNeese won an earlier meeting in Houston, 4-3 in 10 innings. Conner Westenburg scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch for the Cowboys. Larry Edwards drove in the other three runs with a bases-loaded double in the sixth. Jack Blackwell picked up the victory in relief. For Houston, outfielder Tre Broussard went 3-for-5 against McNeese. Westenburg is 10th in the Southland in hitting with a .350 average and continues to lead the nation in triples with nine. Easton Dowell has dropped to second in the SLC in hitting at .397 after a tough weekend in Edinburg, Texas. 'It was a great championship atmosphere down there,' said Hill. 'They are a very good team, and they played a little better than us. They are tough to play at home.' The series drew an average of 3,249 fans. Tuesday opens a four-game homestand for McNeese as Stephen F. Austin comes in on the weekend as the last conference home series. 'It is now about taking care of the job on Tuesday and getting back to business on the weekend,' said Hill. 'There is a lot of important baseball still to play. 'We are disappointed we didn't finish the series better, but now we have to move on. We still have a lot to play for.' Five teams will enter this weekend within 2½ games of first place in the Southland. Four of those clubs have six league games left, with UTRGV down to only three. 'We know what we are playing for,' said Hill. 'If you told us going into the season we would be a game back with six to play, we would have taken it.' Now the Cowboys have to finish. Both teams are likely to use several pitchers in Tuesday's game as they attempt to stay on schedule for the weekend.
