BBC chiefs are reportedly gripped by a "terrible, terrible fear" that Strictly Come Dancing could be marred by scandal once more this year, prompting them to vet contestants rigorously for the upcoming series. The popular dance show has been hit by startling headlines in recent times, and the latest incident involves EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick, who is participating in the 2024 series.
He was suspended by the BBC for using an offensive term towards disabled individuals during filming in Blackpool.
This follows the controversy surrounding Giovanni Pernice, after his dance partner Amanda Abbington accused him of bullying and aggressive behaviour, leading the broadcaster to initiate an internal probe. In May, radio presenter Wynne Evans announced his departure from the BBC following the non-renewal of his contract.
Evans had previously issued an apology for what he termed an "inappropriate and unacceptable" comment made at the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing live tour in December, which was directed at professional dancer and It Takes Two host Janette Manrara.
In an effort to avoid any further issues, the BBC is determined to ensure a 'risk-free' line-up for the next season. Among those being considered are Blue Peter hosts Joel Mawhinney and Shini Muthukrishnan, as well as Tom Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla, reports the Mirror.
Georgia Toffolo, the queen of I'm a Celebrity Jungle, is rumoured to be in the running, as is Girls Aloud's Nicola Roberts. Reports suggest that newlywed and former Love Island star Dani Dyer is under consideration, with ex-Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan also on the list of potential candidates.

"There is a terrible, terrible fear among those high up that these awful things are going to keep happening and the show will be brought into disrepute again and again," a BBC insider is reported to have revealed to MailOnline. "With that in mind, they are taking no chances.
"Stringent checks will be carried out, along with inquiries and investigations into the backgrounds of potential stars to ensure that no one who could tarnish the show's reputation is chosen. For years, there was the infamous Strictly 'curse', where contestants and professionals were embroiled in affairs. But that has ceased.
"Changes were made to the partnerships and it worked. However, there have been other issues in recent years. What's even more embarrassing for the BBC is that Wynne and Jamie are from their own roster of stars. Moving forward, those at the helm want a wholesome image to prevail. No more scandal – just joy."
Over the weekend, EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick expressed his deep regret for using a derogatory term about disabled people. This shocking revelation comes six months after his stint on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing - which is when the alleged incident is believed to have occurred.
The actor, aged 30, has been a fixture on EastEnders since 2006, portraying the character Jay Brown. However, he is currently suspended from the soap following the emergence of a video in which he uses offensive language, allegedly shared amongst friends.
He has issued a heartfelt apology, as reported by The Sun on Sunday, stating: "I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly.

"I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely.
"Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong."
He further extended his apologies to the people of Blackpool and reiterated his regret over his choice of words. A representative of the star was contacted by The Mirror for comment.

Annabel Croft shares what 'saved her from sinking' after husband's death
Strictly Come Dancing star, Annabel Croft, has praised the BBC dance show after reaching the semi-finals of the star-studded series in 2023 with Johannes Radebe Annabel Croft admits she was 'saved' by Strictly Come Dancing after signing up to the show within a few weeks of tragically losing her husband. The tennis star, 58, was bereft when her husband and the father of her three children, Mel Coleman, died in 2023 aged 60, just eight weeks after being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Insisting she didn't want to be a "professional widow", Annabel said yes to Strictly and wowed the audience and judges alike, reaching the semi-finals with her professional partner, Johannes Radebe. Praising the show for 'stopping her from sinking' while she navigated her grief, she said: "Literally within a few weeks [of losing him] I was on the phone to my agent. I don't know what I would have done without being busy. I would have sunk." She continues in The Telegraph: "There is so much to be positive about. I don't want to be a professional widow. I understand that a lot of people can identify with what I've been through, but I don't want grief to define me." Annabel recently revealed that her husband had heartbreakingly kept his symptoms from her before he saw a doctor. Speaking on the podcast, she said: "We were making the bed one day and he just turned to me and he said 'I haven't told you this Annabel, but I've got these funny pains in my side and they're just not going away, they're getting worse'." The mum-of-three continued: "It never dawned on me that it could be something so absolutely catastrophic." After the results of Mel's scans came back, Annabel said the doctors were "absolutely horrified because they knew that he wouldn't have much time left" She explained: "Outside before we went in, Mel had said to me in the car park 'I'm really worried about this meeting', and I said 'Oh, don't worry about it - of course it's going to be fine. You know, maybe you just have a cyst that's going to have to be removed'. "But the very first thing out of the surgeon's mouth was 'I'm afraid your life expectancy's not very good." After being dealt the devastating diagnosis, Annabel said Mel's cancer had spread to the liver and kidneys and possibly the brain before he eventually died from sepsis. She shared: "People don't realise this. He had stage four cancer. It started with colon cancer, but it could have been across everywhere at the same time. But it spread into the liver, it was spread into the kidneys, even possibly into the brain as well. But what he actually died of was sepsis and there was a perforation from one of the tumours. "We'd gone on this flight to Portugal thinking he was going to get some sunshine and some respite from all of his treatment. I think maybe on that flight it may have just swollen something and perforated one of the tumours." During the first Strictly pairing show two years ago, Annabel opened up about her husband's unexpected death and heartbreakingly admitted that Mel would have loved to have seen her on the dance floor. She said that it was always his "dream" for her to be on the show, saying she 'wished more than anything' that Mel could see her performing.

The tournament has travelled all around the globe over the years, and for the first time in 2019, it made it's way to Cardiff, Wales. In an announcement at the time, it was revealed that Michael would be playing a significant role in it's organisation. Speaking to the Big Issue in 2021 about the financial sacrifice, he said: "I had a house in America and a house here and I put those up and just did whatever it took. "It was scary and incredibly stressful. I'll be paying for it for a long time." In another move to help try and combat homelessness, Michael recently released, A Home for Spark the Dragon, a children's book aimed at raising awareness and helping children to understand about homelessness.
