'While no suspects have been apprehended at this stage, the interdiction has laid the groundwork for an ongoing and broader investigation,' the PDEA said.
Authorities intercepted several parcels with snack boxes containing a total of 120 kilograms of shabu worth P816 million at a warehouse in Pasig City, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Monday.
In a statement, the PDEA said the parcels came from multiple locations in California, USA, and were addressed to multiple consignees in Taguig, Pasig, and Makati in the Philippines.
These parcels were undeclared upon arrival.
'While no suspects have been apprehended at this stage, the interdiction has laid the groundwork for an ongoing and broader investigation,' the PDEA said.
All evidence has been forwarded to the PDEA Laboratory Service for confirmatory analysis as case documentation and legal procedures are underway.
'This interdiction success is a product of strong collaboration between PDEA and our law enforcement partners. Our presence in major airports, seaports, and cargo facilities is not just necessary—it is imperative,' PDEA director general Undersecretary Isagani R. Nerez said.
The anti-illegal drug agency called on the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious packages or drug-related activities through the Facebook page 'Isumbong Mo Sa PDEA' or the hotlines 0995-345-7020 and 0931-027-8212. –NB, GMA integrated News

Nueva Ecija Gov. Umali appeals Ombudsman suspension order

'I respect the legal process, but I must make it clear that this case does not involve any criminal charge nor any issue of corruption, theft, or wrongdoing,' Nueva Ecija Governor Aurelio Umali said in a statement. Photo: Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija on Facebook Nueva Ecija Governor Aurelio Umali on Sunday said that he is appealing the decision of the Ombudsman to suspend him for a year without pay, adding that the ruling stemmed from an interpretation issue and that the charges against him were politically motivated. In a statement on his social media account, Umali said he already filed a motion for reconsideration which is now pending resolution, and that his camp will continue to go through the proper legal process. 'I respect the legal process, but I must make it clear that this case does not involve any criminal charge nor any issue of corruption, theft, or wrongdoing,' he said in a post on his Facebook account. 'This is purely a matter of legal interpretation and implementation of the law regarding the issuance of CSG permits,' he added. This comes as the Ombudsman said it found evidence indicating that Umali is guilty of misconduct, due to the alleged illegal issuance of 205 quarrying permits without the required certificates from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). 'It is important to emphasize that the complaint against me was politically motivated. The complainant is a well-known 'perennial complainant,' who has long been involved in political cases and is currently serving as a security aide to one of my strongest political rivals—an individual who has already publicly declared his intention to run for governor in 2028,' Umali said. 'No political harassment, no baseless accusations, and no unjust rulings will stop us from pursuing our shared vision of a strong, progressive, and just Nueva Ecija,' he added. — Jon Viktor D. PDEA begins crackdown on ‘tuklaw' or black cigarette

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has begun its crackdown against 'tuklaw' or black cigarettes following a viral video that showed that it caused seizures to some smokers. In Marisol Abdurahman's Wednesday report on '24 Oras,' individuals using and selling black cigarettes will be detained and face charges. PDEA director general General Isagani Nerez said the black cigarettes from Palawan and Quezon City were positive for a synthetic ingredient called cannabinoid, which is considered a dangerous drug. 'Because it is dangerous drugs and it is the same with the provision of Republic Act 9165, yung ating Dangerous Drugs law. Yan, pag nagbenta ka, you will be charged for selling. And pag gumamit ka, then you will be charged for use,' Nerez said. (Because it is a dangerous drug, it falls under the provisions of Republic Act 9165, or the dangerous drugs law. If you sell, you will be charged for selling. And if you were caught using it, then you will be charged for drug use.) PDEA is also focused on investigating where the black cigarettes came from. Although based on their information, it came from another country. Nerez said black cigarettes are in the country to entice tourists to use it as a remembrance or souvenir for free. PDEA admitted that it is challenged in determining the source of black cigarettes, which are mixed with synthetic cannabinoids or chemicals. Nerez said there are no synthetic cannabinoids in the country, so it could be sourced and smuggled from another country. 'It's a new drug. Synthetic pa naman ito. Minsan nahirapan na i-detect (it's synthetic, which could sometimes be difficult to detect),' Nerez said. However, PDEA said it has a theory on detecting the substance after a synthetic cannabinoid was recently seized in Clark, Pampanga. Some lawmakers expressed concern over the black cigarettes during the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs meeting. PDEA and other law enforcement agencies continue with their coordination and investigation to curb the spread of black cigarettes. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Man wanted for drug possession yields P136-M shabu in Laguna

Authorities seized P136 million worth of suspected shabu while serving a warrant of arrest in San Pablo, Laguna. According to Marisol Abduhrahman's Tuesday report on '24 Oras,' agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) were only supposed to serve a warrant of arrest against the suspect when they discovered the 20 kilos of shabu. 'Meron kasi syang pending na case po sa isang RTC dito sa Manila for violation also of 9165, particularly Section 1. That's possession. Nagkataon lang naman ho nung i-implement natin yung warrant of arrest, may nakita din ho dun sa sasakyan ng tao,' said PDEA spokesperson Atty Frederick Calulut. (The suspect has a pending case in a Manila Regional Trial Court for violation of RA 9165, specifically Section 1, which refers to possession. It just so happened that when we served the warrant of arrest, we found it in his vehicle.) PDEA also arrested one of the alleged members of the suspect's group. PDEA said the seizure of the 20-kilo shabu affected the operations of the alleged drug syndicate, especially since there is a shortage of supply in Metro Manila, where the drugs were supposed to be delivered. 'Ang ginagawa ng drug dealers ngayon, hinahaluan ng kemikal ang shabu na binebenta nila. Ang potency o quality ng shabu na binibili ngayon ng mga gumagamit ay less than 10% pa,' Calulut said. (Drug dealers mix the shabu they are selling with other chemicals, and the potency or quality of the shabu in the market is less than 10%.) The suspects are under the custody of the PDEA. They gave only brief denials when confronted with the accusation. PDEA is still looking for the other members of the suspect's group, who were supplying shabu in Metro Manila. –Mariel Celine Serquiña/NB, GMA Integrated News
