Trump and his defence boss have created a 'cult of personality'
US strikes on Iran have dominated headlines this week, in a fast-moving news story that grew stranger by the minute. Trump even shouted: 'They don't know what the f*** they're doing'.
Today, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth gave a speech at the Pentagon that came across as more of a condescending lecture, slamming the press for their coverage of the attacks on nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan.
Through gritted teeth, Hegseth told reporters: 'The assessment is that we significantly damaged the nuclear program, setting it back by years, I repeat, years. What the United States did was historic.'
Furrowing his brow, the defence chief added: 'But because you – and I mean specifically you, the press – because you cheer against Trump so hard… You want him not to be successful so badly that you have to cheer against the efficacy of these strikes.
'You hope maybe they weren't effective, the way the Trump administration has represented them isn't true, so you make half-truths, spin leaked information into every way you can to try to cause doubt and manipulate the public mind.'
Hegseth's remarks were one of the most brutal attacks on the press from a senior official in Trump's second term so far.
But the most interesting part isn't the words, an expert has said — it's the focus of their wrath.
Ian Garner, historian and propaganda analyst at the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw, told Metro it's telling to see Trump and Hegseth go on the attack, not against Iran, but against the media.
'This has been coming back since his first presidential run. To me, it's extremely authoritarian,' he said.
'The authoritarian approach is to say that the real enemy, the much more frightening enemy, is the enemy within.'
For Hegseth and Trump, that 'enemy' is the press, which they claim has undermined a military mission simply by reporting on evidence coming out of the Pentagon.
Media outlets that reported on new intelligence from the US suggesting the attacks in Iran did not destroy the nuclear facilities were publicly humiliated by Trump.

But Mr Garner points out: 'To suggest the media is somehow undermining a military mission by reporting on evidence, can't possibly affect the reality of that mission.
'The way Trump and Hegseth have interacted with the public and media tells us is something much more important: that this conflict is much more about spectacle and performance and giving domestic audiences a show of strength from the White House and the Pentagon than achieving any particular strategic target.'
The heart of this performance? Trump himself. A growing number of Americans are seeing him as the true commander-in-chief, Mr Garner argues.
'The idea here is that power seems to emanate from this one political figure, from Donald Trump himself, which is eerily reminiscent of cults of personality we've seen elsewhere.
'And yet, the spectacle and the performance are delivered in such an obvious way that it is really clear to any intelligent observer that this is truly a cult of personality.' More Trending
The media spectable unfolded after the US unleashed more than a dozen bombs on two Iranian nuclear facilities, the Fordow Fuel Enrichment plant and the Natanz Enrichment Complex.
But the revelation that the US may not have fully eliminated the centrifuges of the sites and highly enriched uranium is quickly becoming an issue for Trump and his 'cult of personality' – as well as the media reporting on it.
But it's not Trump's first fight with the media. He became famous in his first campaign for slamming what he called the 'fake news media' for spreading lies.
In 2017, it was found that one in four of Trump's tweets at the time contained fake news.

She added: "That is specifically at the request of the president, who understands that in the hot temperatures down here, when something is painted black, it gets even warmer, and it will make it even harder for people to climb. "So we are going to be painting the entire southern border wall black to make sure that we encourage individuals to not come into our country illegally." Noem's announcement came with a performative press opportunity where she was seen picking up a roller brush and dipping it into black paint to get started on Trump's new idea. The U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks also claimed the black paint would help deter rust. The cost of this huge project has not yet been shared. A DHS spokesperson, on the cost of the wall, said: "With the OBBB we will be able to finish the border wall system started under President Trump's first term. Due to an active procurement process to finish the wall it would be irresponsible to the American taxpayer to release the numbers as it may impact future bids." Last month, the US President signed his hugely controversial " big, beautiful bill" which set aside $165 billion for the Department of Homeland Security - most of which will be spent on the southern border. Noem also said around half a mile of barrier has been built each day, adding: "The border wall will look very different based on the topography and the geography of where it is built." Trump once campaigned on building a "big, beautiful wall", in 2018 during his first run to become president, but many stretches of the border remain empty seven years after his promise. During Trump's first term, he reportedly told a group of officials and engineers that he also wanted the wall to have sharp spikes on the top to further deter people from climbing over.

Trump takes revenge on pro-transgender K-12 schools with most brutal punishment yet
The Trump administration is seeking to punish some school districts for supporting transgender students. Five schools in northern Virginia may lose all federal funding for rejecting an agreement with the Department of Education to terminate pro-transgender policies. The department announced Tuesday that school districts for Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Prince William County have been placed on high-risk status. These schools earned the wrath of Trump because they have not reformed policies allowing transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that correlate to their gender identity. The department is reportedly seeking to suspend $50 million in federal funding to these school districts over alleged civil rights violations, according to Politico. Since the election, Trump has vocally opposed transgender inclusivity policies at federally funded institutions, including K-12 schools and universities. On his first day in office Trump signed an executive order requiring federal departments to define gender based on sex. Trump Education Secretary Linda McMahon is leading the charge on this effort after these school districts rejected their policies for dealing with transgenderism. 'States and school districts cannot openly violate federal law while simultaneously receiving federal funding with no additional scrutiny,' said McMahon in a statement. 'The Northern Virginia School Divisions that are choosing to abide by woke gender ideology in place of federal law must now prove they are using every single federal dollar for a legal purpose.' The agency accused school districts of violating Title IX for signing their proposed resolution by the August 15 deadline. However, the districts under fire claim they are not in violation of Title IX – an education law meant to stop schools from sex discrimination. Loudoun County Public Schools spokesperson Dan Adams said the school district does not believe it has violated Title IX. 'LCPS disputes that we have engaged in activity that would warrant being characterized as a 'high-risk' grantee and will consider appropriate next steps,' said a spokesperson for Loudon County Public Schools in a statement to Politico. 'Moreover, LCPS will continue to expend federal funds consistent with federal law and remains committed to its mission of empowering all students to make meaningful contributions to the world.' However, an official with Prince William County Public Schools claimed it has 'not yet received any official notice from the Department of Education.' The Education Department's actions are in line with the administration's latest attacks against D.C. area institutions. Trump has launched a massive crime crackdown on the capital with the National Guard and took over the city's John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after firing the entire board. More recently, Trump's White House has gone after the Smithsonian Institution for being too 'woke.'

Pete Hegseth is requiring so much security it's taking officers off of criminal investigations
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth 's security requirements are so extensive that it is placing a strain on the U.S. Army 's Criminal Investigation Division, according to a report. The Washington Post reports that the CID, which is responsible for protecting top Pentagon officials as well as serving as the Army's law enforcment arm, has been forced to draft agents who would otherwise be investigating criminal offenses concerning members of the Armed Forces to help watch over Hegseth's family and their properties in D.C., Minnesota and Tennessee. 'I've never seen this many security teams for one guy,' one official told the newspaper. 'Nobody has.' The CID reportedly maintains around 1,500 agents in total, around 150 of whom are typically assigned to VIP security details. But since Hegseth took office in January, the number shifted over into personal protection roles has risen to between 400 and 500, according to two differing estimates the paper received. One CID official quoted by the Post expressed their frustration with the situation by saying agents were being prevented from 'doing what we are supposed to be doing' in order to 'sit on luggage' or 'sit in the cars on the driveway.' Others complained of having to shepherd the secretary's children to school or patrol the perimeter of his properties. 'It is literally taking away from [CID's] law enforcement mission,' they said. 'You are taking hundreds of people out of the field to provide this level of protection.' One of the reasons for the heightened security surrounding the secretary is the fact that he received a bomb threat at his Tennessee home late last year shortly after he was nominated to his post by President Donald Trump, which came a matter of months after two attempts were made on Trump's own life during the campaign, the first of which saw the Secret Service heavily criticized. Another is the complexity of Hegseth's blended family, which includes one child from his marriage to Jennifer Hegseth as well as three from her previous marriage and another three from his. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell reacted angrily to the Post 's reporting and warned in a statement that the media scrutinizing a cabinet secretary's security arrangements 'puts lives at risk,' adding that Hegseth's were 'appropriate' and that 'any action pertaining to the security of Secretary Hegseth and his family has been in response to the threat environment and at the full recommendation of the Army Criminal Investigation Division.' The Independent has also reached out to the Department of Defense for additional comment. Hegseth's reign as the nation's top defense official has been tumultuous so far, with U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin's departure on Monday only the latest in an ongoing shake-up that has seen the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the chief of naval operations, the commandant of the Coast Guard, and the vice chief of staff of the Air Force all changed in recent months. The secretary has also struggled to replace his own chief of staff, spokesman and senior aides after they left and found himself caught up in the 'Signalgate' scandal, which erupted in March when Trump's short-lived national security adviser Mike Waltz accidentally added Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg to a group chat in which top secret information about an upcoming bombing raid on Houthi rebels in Yemen was discussed. In addition, Hegseth, a former Fox News weekend host, has been caught up in a number of culture war issues, from the renaming of the U.S.S. Harvey Milk to questions arising from his decision to post a video on X in which a Christian nationalist pastor expressed his support for depriving women of the vote.
