Central Gauteng Athletics runner shines on world stage

The Citizen07-05-2025
Central Gauteng Athletics 2024 senior men athlete of the year Akani Simbine continues to break records on international stages.
He recently became the first athlete to run the 100m race in less than 10 seconds for 11 years in a row, breaking Usain Bolt's record.
On April 26, in Xiamen, People's Republic of China, Simbine won the opening 100m event of the Diamond League season by dominating a stacked field.
The South African speedster crossed the finish line ahead of former world champion Christian Coleman and Olympic 200m winner Letsile Tebogo.
With a time of 9.99 seconds, Simbine, the world's indoor bronze champion, crossed the finish line far ahead of the competition.
Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya came in second in 10.13 seconds, and Jeremiah Azu of the United Kingdom came in third in 10.17 seconds.
With a time of 10.20 seconds, Tebogo had to settle for seventh place in the 10-man competition.
At the Botswana Golden Grand Prix in Gaborone on Saturday, April 12, Simbine posted a world lead of 9.90 seconds, demonstrating his excellent form early in the season.
The South African also won his first global sprint medal, taking bronze in the 60m at the recent World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing in his competitions debut.
This was a career defining win for him as he previously had failed to reach the podium in three world championships and one Olympic final.
The former Edenglen High learner is looking to continue his form at the World Athletics Relays championship to be held in Guangzhou, China.
A total of 19 athletes have been included in the South African team for the championships.
The national squad will compete in four events, including the men's 4x100m, the men's and women's 4x400m and the mixed 4x400m.
The men's 4x100m team will be anchored by national 100m record holder Simbine.
He will be joined by junior sensation Walaza and fellow rising star Bradley Nkoana, both of whom joined Simbine in the sprint relay team that earned South Africa the silver medal at last year's Olympic Games in Paris, as well as national 200m champion Sinesipho Dambile, Retshidisitswe Mlenga and Tsebo Matsoso.

FINAL schoolboy First XV rugby rankings for 2025

The 'unofficial' ranking of South Africa's top schoolboy rugby sides is always a point of debate. Image: Instagram @paarlboyshighschool The 'unofficial' ranking of South Africa's top schoolboy rugby sides was settled at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl earlier this month when Paal Boys' High upset hosts Paarl Gimnasium 35-33 in a match that will long live in the memory bank. While there are still a handful of matches taking place around the country, the 'big guns' are now done for the season. Upset readers Any attempt at ranking South Africa's First XV rugby schools is guaranteed to upset as many readers as it pleases. ADVERTISEMENT The simple fact of the matter is that there is NO possible way of accurately determining a definitive list. Many lists are to be found floating around the internet – none of which are in fact 'official'. While it's true that thanks to an increase in the number of schoolboy rugby festivals around the country more schools are playing schools they previously wouldn't have faced, no school plays every other school both home and away during the season. Hence, every list should be taken with a pinch of salt and is subjective at best. Having said that, here is the final unofficial 'official' First XV Top 20 rankings list after the weekend's matches: Ranking School Province 1 Paarl Boys' High Western Cape 2 Paarl Gimnasium Western Cape 3 Grey College Free State 4 Affies Gauteng 5 Oakdale Western Cape 6 Paul Roos Western Cape 7 DHS KwaZulu-Natal 8 Helpmekaar Gauteng 9 Garsfontein Gauteng 10 Noordheuwel Gauteng 12 Stellenberg Western Cape 12 Rondebosch Western Cape 13 Wynberg Western Cape 14 Outeniqua Western Cape 15 Westville KwaZulu-Natal 16 Northwood KwaZulu-Natal 17 Hilton College KwaZulu-Natal 18 Boland Landbou Western Cape 19 Jeppe Gauteng 20 Maritzburg College KwaZulu-Natal Selected results from the weekend Gauteng Noordvaal EG Jansen 24-31 Garsfontein ADVERTISEMENT Monument 28-29 Waterkloof Western Cape Rondebosch 23-20 SACS Bishops 26-26 Wynberg Eastern Cape Dale College 10-16 Hudson Park Framesby 27-10 Marlow Graeme College 29-26 Muir College Grey High 14-27 Selborne College Queens College 52-0 Cambridge Free State Grey College 26-25 Paul Roos NOTE: More results will be added as they become available Have much interest do you have in schoolboy sport rankings? Dricus to take time off to ‘fix things', declines rematch with Chimaev

The former SA UFC middleweight champion will take time away from the sport to work on chinks in his armour. While Dricus du Plessis and his team could have wallowed in defeat after their devastating loss of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title, his coach is already planning how they can return stronger. Du Plessis had no answers for undefeated Russian Khamzat Chimaev's wrestling as he succumbed to a unanimous decision defeat at UFC 319 in Chicago on Sunday. Du Plessis' head coach, Morne Visser, has revealed the South African is not interested in an immediate rematch because they have plenty of things to do before they compete for the title again. 'We have got to fix sh** asap. It is going to be a big change to fix things, but we know what to do,' Visser told Submission Radio's YouTube channel. 'When you have been dominated in such a way, you do not deserve a rematch. If it was a close fight, then maybe.' '550 bee stings' As dominant as the Russian was, Du Plessis took no significant damage. 'Dricus has a couple of stitches on his chin … 550 bee stings, that's what is was,' chuckled Visser, referring to the number of punches thrown by Chimaev in the fight. 'He took no punishment. It's sad to lose like that. I don't mind losing unanimously if there was a proper brawl, but there was nothing.' Although Visser was gracious in defeat, saying they should have done a lot better, he also felt the referee played his part in making the fight as boring as it was. 'When a fighter like Chimaev throws over 500 punches with only 37 of them being significant, he obviously controlled the tempo, but when the fight is slow, the referee must give warnings and stand the fighters up after three or four warnings,' Visser said. 'That fight was smothered with boredom, and we are also to blame, so hats off to him.' Visser said they will not be rushing into any fight soon simply because one is available. Instead, they will first fix this chink in DDP's armour. 'Right now, it doesn't make sense taking another fight until we have fixed this problem. 'Dricus will take a couple of weeks off now and then I need about 12-15 weeks to sort out this issue, after which we will go straight back into fight camp, so he will be in the octagon early next year,' Visser said when asked when Du Plessis would return to action.

Etiosa Ighodaro joins Kaizer Chiefs – Can he be the striker they've been waiting for?

Another striker Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of striker Etiosa Ighodaro from Mamelodi Sundowns. Ighodaro spent last season on loan at AmaZulu. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Image: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have completed the deal to bring Mamelodi Sundowns' Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro to Naturena. Amakhosi announced on their social media channels on Tuesday that Ighodaro joins their ranks in a bid to address their woes in front of goal that have plagued them for the last two Betway Premiership seasons. Ighodaro joins from Sundowns, but since joining the Brazilians at just 20 years old in 2021, he never kicked a ball for them in an official game. Immediately after arriving in South Africa from Abuja College, he was sent on loan to the University of Pretoria. In 2022, he moved – on loan again – to Chippa United in the Eastern Cape. In 2023, SuperSport United called on his services before AmaZulu secured him the following season. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Video Player is loading. We would like to welcome him to the Kaizer Chiefs Family! #WelcomeIghodaro #Amakhosi4Life — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) August 19, 2025 During his career in South African football, his best goal return in the league was 11 goals in 27 games for Chippa United. Last season, he found the back of the net six times for AmaZulu. In the last four years, he's scored 25 goals in all competitions. That mixed record tells the story of a striker still finding consistency, but one who has shown enough to hint at his potential. While he needs to improve on his goal input, there are some positives to Ighodaro's game, and Nasreddine Nabi will be hoping to get the most out of them. With his physical frame, Ighodaro is built like a traditional number 9, possessing the physicality to hold the ball up effectively and shield it under pressure. This allows him to occupy defenders and create opportunities – he combines this with the awareness of a modern striker. He's also been credited with intelligent off-the-ball movement and his ability to read the game. At just 24 years old, Ighodaro still has a lot of room for improvement. Whether he can become the prolific goalscorer Chiefs are desperate for remains to be seen. For Chiefs, the signing represents both a gamble and an opportunity. Ighodaro has shown flashes of promise without yet proving himself as a consistent match-winner, but Naturena could be the stage where he finally delivers on his potential. If Nabi can harness his strengths and unlock his finishing touch, Ighodaro may well become the striker to fire Amakhosi back to the summit of South African football.
