Sprite kicks off its summer campaign in Da Nang, Vietnam with a beach festival

Living in Singapore, we all know how the heat can often make a fun day out turn into a sweaty nightmare. Serving as a solution to this is Sprite — the ultimate heat-cutter and your escape from the relentless summer heat.
As more than just a refreshing drink, Sprite has shaped itself into a global force that also pushes the boundaries of the experience with collaborations and activations across the region, which included the partnership with McDonald's and its introduction of the limited-time Smoky Chilli Mayo McSpicy. Following Sprite's takeover on the white-powdery beaches of Boracay in early May, the brand dove deeper into the world of Gen Zs with a Sprite Summer Beach Festival in Da Nang, Vietnam, where the stunning beaches were transformed into an immersive zone complete with live music, and fun beach activities which included a large water slide. In the evening, a huge crowd gathered for a line-up of popular Vietnamese artists such as Dương Domic, LowG, Rhyder, Jsol, and Hurrykng, who turned up the heat with their hit songs that had the crowd singing along.
So, why the decision to focus on Gen-Zs? Tin Le, Head of Marketing Vietnam & Cambodia for The Coca-Cola Company, told NYLON Singapore that heat sometimes block people from having fun, and for Gen-Zs, they are a group that like to face heated moments in their life with a 'cool pep'.

This led Tin Le and his team to look at how Sprite could encourage people to have fun, no matter what the temperature was. As this wasn't the first festival of its kind for Sprite, the decision to hold it in Da Nang was partly influenced by Vietnam's long coastline.
'Every summer, it is like a promise that we keep with our consumers to bring our activations to the most beautiful beaches in town and in the city.'
He added: 'We also like to be able to help the local cities that we are in to welcome more tourists as well, just like the way we did it in Da Nang.'

But beyond that, Sprite had partnered restaurants too, showcasing the perfect pairing between Vietnamese spicy food and a can of Sprite.
'Our humble wish is too make sure the consumers enjoy their spicy food and help the local restaurant owners to expand their businesses to tourists,' said Tin Le.
When asked if there was one word he would use to describe Sprite, Tin Le said, 'It would be cool.'
And that's just not about how it looks. He explained that it is the whole spirit of Sprite and how it reflects the idea of staying cool even in the most heated moments of our lives.
'Cool is about facing any heated moments with a calm head, and that is how you'll shine.'

SINGAPORE: Workplace relationships have been found to be most common among older Singapore workers, according to a new survey by global market research and data analytics company Milieu Insight. Notably, nearly four in 10 (38%) baby boomers and three in 10 Gen X in Singapore said they met their most recent partner at work—well above the average across all age groups. When asked about the appropriateness of workplace romance, baby boomers (38%) said such relationships can be acceptable regardless of context. However, most Gen Zs (64%), millennials (57%), and Gen X (46%) believed they are only appropriate if disclosed to HR and professional boundaries are respected. Among millennials, 23% said they met their partner through dating apps, though many also found love at school or work. The survey also found that 44% of all respondents believe romantic relationships between senior-level colleagues were acceptable, as long as HR was informed and things were managed professionally. However, one in four said that even at senior levels, power imbalances could still be a concern. Despite differing views, half of Singaporeans said they could imagine working with their partner—if boundaries were clear—though 40% believed it would blur personal and professional lines, and 37% feared it could test their patience or boundaries. Still, 54% of respondents said such relationships could stir gossip or create uncertainty among colleagues. The survey, which had a margin of error of ±4 percentage points, was conducted online from July 23 to 25 and gathered responses from 500 Singaporeans aged 18 and above. It explored how employees across different generations in Singapore feel about workplace relationships, power dynamics, and corporate accountability. Talk of workplace relationships gained attention after the viral video, which was viewed by over 100 million people globally, of former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and his HR chief sharing an intimate moment at a Coldplay concert. In Singapore, more than 70% of Gen Z and millennial respondents said they heard about it through social media, while only 36% of baby boomers were aware of it, with most learning about it from news platforms. Despite the controversy, 39% of all respondents found the video 'entertaining.' Meanwhile, 66% believed the relationship was 'meant to be hidden,' and 56% said the backlash stemmed mainly from the CEO's attempt to 'conceal' it. National Day face-off: Which fast-food chain nailed its limited-edition offering?

Every year, fast-food restaurants put their own spin on local flavours for National Day. This year, it seemed like everyone was spinning their take from the same thread - or maybe chilli crab sauce suppliers were offering an irresistible deal. The New Paper tried limited-time offerings from five fast-food restaurants, from laksa fish to chilli crab prawn. Guzman y Gomez: Burrito Bowl with Laksa Barramundi TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE Guzman y Gomez is serving up a new limited-edition filling this National Day - the Laksa Barramundi. This new addition features pan-seared barramundi fillets topped with a laksa sauce made from dried shrimp, candlenut, laksa leaves, spices, and coconut milk from The Coconut Club. We tried it in a Burrito Bowl, which came with fragrant white rice, black beans, salsa, and corn chips. Maybe it's the Singaporean in us, but the whole thing gave off major cai png (mixed rice) vibes - like the lovechild of a cai png stall and a Mexican taqueria. The laksa sauce added a flavourful, coconut-rich depth to every bite of the barramundi, which was tender and generously portioned. The black beans had a soft and creamy texture, and the chips provided a nice crunch. Overall, it was an inoffensive fusion with each element complementing the others, although we did raise an eyebrow at the cheese sitting on top of the laksa barramundi. Rating: 4/5 McDonald's: Chilli Crab Sauce Prawn Burger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE You could say McDonald's pioneered the trend of controversial National Day specials - from the iconic Nasi Lemak Burger to interesting inventions such as the Crispy Hainanese Chicken Burger and the Laksa Delight Burger. This year, the chain was the first among many quick-service restaurants to bring chilli crab sauce burgers to the table. The Chilli Crab Sauce Prawn Burger comes stacked with fluffy scrambled eggs, chilli crab sauce, a prawn patty, lettuce, and coleslaw dressing, all packed into a bun. For some reason, the chilli crab sauce leaned much sweeter than spicy - almost reminiscent of Thai sweet chilli sauce. Perhaps they're continuing the Thai theme after last year's Thai Milk Tea Frappé. Though the sauce did taste a little like chilli crab sauce, it felt like a watered-down, family-friendly version that lacked a kick to it. The brioche bun was a bit questionable, too, giving the burger an odd buttery finish. We did enjoy the scrambled eggs, though, but we think we'll stick to having them in our breakfast burgers instead. Rating: 2/5 KFC: Chilli Crab Mantou Zinger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE Swapping out the usual sesame buns for a fried mantou, this new Zinger burger pairs the brand's signature fried Zinger fillet with chilli crab sauce and lettuce. The chilli crab sauce here was much more flavourful than the version from the Golden Arches - sour and spicy, without being overly sweet. The fried mantou was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. However, that also meant that the burger felt extremely sinful and a tad bit salty. The few slices of lettuce were not enough to balance it out. Then again, it's fast food, so no one's expecting heaps of greens. Rating: 3.5/5 Long John Silver's: Chilli Crab Alaska Pollock Mantou Burger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE With lettuce, tomato slices, cheese, and battered Alaska pollock tucked between a fried mantou, the Chilli Crab Alaska Pollock Mantou Burger turned out to be a pleasant surprise. This unassuming burger ended up being our favourite as the fried mantou was perfectly crisped, with a crunchy top that made every bite extra satisfying. The vegetables also helped cut through any greasiness, which we appreciated. That said, the chilli crab sauce tasted more like a mildly spicy generic sauce than what it claimed to be. So even though we enjoyed it a lot, we were left a little puzzled by what we had eaten. Rating: 4.5/5 Burger King: Rendang Tendergrill Chicken Burger TNP PHOTO: SEAH JUN DE Though Burger King's rendang series isn't new, it was a welcome break from all the chilli crab-themed burgers this National Day. The Rendang Tendergrill Chicken Burger came with a juicy, grilled chicken thigh patty and onions that were lathered with a generous amount of nutty, spiced rendang sauce. We felt that it was a little too jelak (cloying) after a few bites. Some greens besides just onions would've helped cut through the richness. Overall, nothing mind-blowing - they played it safe here. Rating: 3.5/5 Conclusion There were a few hits and misses - as expected each year. We just hope the chilli crab sauce craze sits the next one out.

July 22, 2025 HANOI – HÀ NỘI Nguyễn Hữu Thiên n, a 26-year-old pastry chef from HCM City, has transformed Việt Nam's cultural legacy into stunning fondant creations, winning prestigious awards across Asia. He began his culinary journey eight years ago at the Saigontourist Hospitality College, where he initially studied hot kitchen techniques. However, it was in the school's pastry workshop where he discovered his true calling, particularly with fondant – a malleable sugar paste used for decorating and sculpting cake designs. After mastering fondant techniques, he realised that Việt Nam boasts a diverse and rich culture, and wanted to incorporate familiar, beautiful elements into fondant cakes as a modern way to preserve and spread traditional values. This innovative approach stems from n's deep appreciation for the country's cultural values, childhood memories, and family bonds. Growing up surrounded by stories of Vietnamese customs and traditions, he felt a personal obligation to preserve and promote these treasures. This sense of duty urged him to tackle increasingly complex cake themes for both domestic and international competitions. One of his most favourable works, the cake titled Hồi Ức (Memories), earned him a silver medal at the 2024 Battle of the Chefs in Malaysia. The piece featured portraits of a grandmother wearing traditional conical leaf hats, crafted from fondant and surrounded by familiar Vietnamese dishes, such as bitter melon soup and braised pork with eggs. The creation powerfully conveyed messages about family meals and the image of Vietnamese motherhood. Another striking masterpiece featuring banh chung, banh tet, braised pork, mứt Tết (Vietnamese sweet dishes served at Lunar New Year), and Đông Hồ paintings secured him the championship title at the 2025 Việt Nam Talented Pastry Chef competition, along with two additional awards for Best Showpiece and Best Dessert. n's most celebrated achievement is his wedding cake Hỷ Sự Hát Bội which fuses the Vietnamese wedding theme (hỷ sự) with hát bội – the country's traditional opera. The creation helped him bag a gold medal in the Wedding Cake category at the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic in May – one of Asia's most significant culinary competitions. n said the cake is a blessing, a promise, a message about love, and also hopes to convey messages about Vietnamese traditional culture and art. With the medal, he contributed to bringing Vietnamese hat boi art to the international stage, inspiring both domestic and international audiences to explore the beauty of Vietnamese traditional culture through a contemporary lens. His impressive award portfolio also includes the Outstanding Communications Award at the 2023 China Innovation Contest, a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Pastry Young Chefs, and a gold medal for artistic display and a silver medal for the team category at the Asian Pastry Young Chefs contest in China last year. In each of his cakes, n marries traditional culture with modern pastry artistry, ensuring it honours cultural values. He spends extensive time and dedicates passion to crafting stories about Vietnamese cuisine, people, and culture. Looking ahead, he plans to continue bringing his cakes to international competitions, affirming Vietnamese cultural and culinary values on the world stage. He is also opening fondant cake-making classes to share his passion with a broader audience.
