Renault and Geely partner to launch new SUV line for global markets
The upcoming range will feature both fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with the initial models expected to take the form of SUVs. While Renault will design the bodywork independently, the core vehicle architecture and chassis will draw heavily from existing models within Geely's Galaxy brand. This approach is intended to keep costs down and shorten development timelines, allowing the vehicles to reach their target markets more quickly.
The partnership reflects a deepening relationship between the two companies in the fast-growing overseas NEV sector. Geely has previously collaborated with other marques such as Volvo, Smart, Polestar and Jiyue, but those projects relied on the CMA platform. In contrast, the GEA architecture is Geely's most recent flagship platform, currently underpinning several models in its Galaxy range – including the newly introduced Galaxy A7, the best-selling Xingyuan, the E5, and the forthcoming M9 and Starship 9.
Industry sources indicate that Renault's European strategy will continue to centre on small electric cars, while the Geely-based SUVs are intended for other key Renault territories, including South Korea, Southeast Asia, Latin America and North Africa. Renault's established reputation and extensive dealer networks in these regions are expected to give the partnership a competitive advantage, providing Geely with a ready-made infrastructure to support sales and service.
The collaboration also builds on earlier agreements between the two firms. Earlier this year, Geely acquired a minority stake in Renault Brazil, a move that grants access to local manufacturing facilities, dealership channels and after-sales operations. Under this arrangement, the overseas version of the Galaxy E5 will become the first Geely model to be produced and distributed through Renault's Brazilian operations.
This latest joint project positions Renault and Geely to strengthen their presence in emerging markets, combining Chinese engineering and manufacturing expertise with Renault's global reach and established brand equity.

Malaysia maintains 2025 growth forecast despite global uncertainties, says Tengku Zafrul in interview
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will maintain its 2025 growth forecast of 4% to 4.8% despite global uncertainties, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz told CNBC's Squawk Box Asia on Monday (Aug 18). The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister told interviewer Martin Soong that the Malaysian economy grew 4.4% in the first half, though the second half will be more challenging. Tengku Zafrul stressed that Malaysia will not retaliate against US tariffs, calling the US both Malaysia's largest export market and top investor. 'We can't afford to retaliate as what's important is to engage,' he said. On semiconductors, which make up 60% of Malaysia's exports to the US, the minister said the sector supports about 100,000 direct jobs. He added that Malaysia has trained 15,000 engineers under its National Semiconductor Strategy, targeting 60,000 by 2030. Despite tariff uncertainty slowing some new projects, long-term investment interest remains strong. On rare earths, he confirmed Malaysia has banned raw exports, requiring all mining to go through local processing and downstream activities. Both US and China-linked companies are welcome to invest under this policy, provided Malaysia remains neutral and consistent. Tengku Zafrul also revealed that Malaysia has concluded a free trade agreement with South Korea, to be signed later this year. Negotiations with the EU, GCC, India and an upgraded Asean-China FTA are also ongoing, with a focus on digital and green trade. He said Malaysia has tightened rules on transshipment by requiring Certificates of Origin to be issued directly by the government, in order to prevent tariff circumvention. The minister stressed that Malaysia's priority is to stay neutral and consistent in its trade policies, while focusing on supply chain security and resilience to keep the country central in global technology and resources industries.

Proton's Tanjung Malim EV plant starts production in September
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd's state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) production plant is set to start production in September 2025. Located in the high-tech Tanjung Malim compound in Perak, the plant is now 90.4% complete and equipment installation is at 83.5%, with overall progress at 86.9%. Once completed, the new plant would produce multiple models from the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, Proton said in a statement on Monday (Aug 18). Production will kick off with the Proton 7, the first-ever EV from a Malaysian automotive brand, followed by the Proton 5, Malaysia's most anticipated entry-level EV, which is currently being showcased to the public on a nationwide tour. From an initial planned capacity of 20,000 units, the plant could ramp up production to 45,000 units per annum, based on sales demand in Malaysia and overseas markets. To support the ramp-up before launch, the plant's immediate hiring focus is on critical operational and technical roles. To-date, it has hired 30 non-executives, aiming to fully train these key personnel before the full-scale production begins mid-September. The plant would eventually lead to the creation of over 200 new jobs, specialising in EV industrialisation and technical services. Meanwhile, as part of its partnership with Proton, the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely) has provided technical guidance on production systems, helped with equipment selection and deployed experts to assist with installation and trial runs. Geely has also facilitated overseas training for Proton staff and ensured that the plant aligns with global EV manufacturing standards. Proton's head of manufacturing engineering, Wan Yousry Mohamed said the plant is a symbol of Proton's transformation and the group's unwavering commitment to a sustainable, high-tech future. "We are also laying the foundation for Malaysia's leadership in the regional EV landscape by strategically expanding our EV offerings into new overseas markets. "This is a monumental step for the company and for the nation, and we are excited to see our first Malaysian-made EVs to roll off the line and onto our roads," he said. – Bernama
