Feyenoord boss proud after tough period ends with Champions League advance
Feb 18 (Reuters) - Feyenoord interim boss Pascal Bosschaart was full of praise for his team's character, after recent upheaval at the club, when they came back from conceding an early goal to draw at AC Milan on Tuesday and reach the Champions League last 16.
The Dutch club's preparations for last week's first leg were far from ideal when Feyenoord sacked Brian Priske two days before the playoff game, but Bosschaart led them to a 1-0 win at home and they finished off the job at the San Siro.
"This says about the team that they have character. I think that's what I'm most proud of," Bosschaart told Ziggo Sport.
"You have to remember that they come from a very difficult phase, have received a lot of criticism, a change of coach, and then an unknown person comes in front of the group who occasionally throws in some empty slogans.
"That is a very difficult phase for them but I do think we are very clear, very transparent and very honest and this group responds very well to it, so I am proud of it."
Bosschaart's side could not have had a worse start in Milan, when former player Santiago Gimenez put the hosts ahead in the opening minute, but they fought back in the second half, after Milan had Theo Hernandez sent off.
"If you concede a goal within minutes, the plan you wanted to execute will be different again," Bosschaart said.
"Everyone will now say that we took the upper hand after the red card but I also thought in the first half that we played quite well. Only after the red card it might be a little easier."
Feyenoord could return to the San Siro in the next round, where they will face either Inter Milan or Arsenal, but for now Bosschaart needs to let their achievement sink in.
"It's beautiful. We are one round further, so very special," Bosschaart said.
"It's fantastic but I have to say, it hasn't really landed with me yet."

Milner extends Brighton contract with Premier League appearances record in sight
June 13 (Reuters) - James Milner has agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton & Hove Albion, the south-coast club said on Friday, as the 39-year-old eyes the all-time record for appearances in the Premier League. Milner, who made his Premier League bow as a 16-year-old for Leeds United in 2002, was restricted to just four league appearances in the 2024-25 campaign due to an injury in August, taking his overall tally to 638 Premier League games. But Milner, who will celebrate his 40th birthday in January, now has the chance to overhaul Gareth Barry's record of 653 Premier League games. Ex-Chelsea boss 'interested in signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek for Serie A side' despite a difficult second season for the midfielder at AC Milan
Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is believed to be interested in reuniting with Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Lazio. The pair worked together during the Italian's sole season - the 2018-19 campaign - at Stamford Bridge, with Sarri giving the midfielder the constant first-team minutes that he had been craving at the time. Loftus-Cheek, who came through the Chelsea academy, blossomed under the stewardship of Sarri, featuring 40 times in all competitions and scoring 10 times. The 29-year-old is now plying his trade for AC Milan in the Serie A - leaving his boyhood club two years ago - while the Italian coach has recently returned for a second stint as Lazio boss. Sarri resigned from the club in March 2024, only to return in June after 15 months away, and now he has his sights on poaching Loftus-Cheek from the Rossoneri, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla. The 66-year-old coach is believed to have been interested in bringing Loftues-Cheek to the Stadio Olimpico during his first stint as boss, but he instead opted to move to Milan. Loftus-Cheek's first season in the Serie A was an impressive one after breaking from the cage of Stamford Bridge in search of more first-team minutes. He thrived in the middle of the par under then-boss Stefano Pioli - who has since had a short and sour stint as Al Nassr manager - becoming a mainstay in the Milan side. However, due to injuries and competition for places, the Englishman never established himself as a regular and he was sent on loans to London rivals Crystal Palace and Fulham. While once being tipped to become a legend in blue, Loftus-Cheek found it tough to break through a star-studded cast, and last year he admitted that he wished he left the club in his younger years in a bid to shine. 'Being at Chelsea coming through, that was the case,' he told The Times. 'It was very difficult to play a lot of football. Even though you're very talented, Chelsea can bring in another player who's in their prime, just ready to go for millions. 'It is difficult as a young player coming through. But I think if the club has a way of liking and pushing home-grown players through, I think it can be easy. 'I think if you're a youngster, seven or eight years old, and you've signed with Chelsea, fantastic because it's a great academy. And you'll learn how to play football. And you'll develop your skills there. A great coach is coaching you. 'But it gets to a point, maybe at 15, 16, where you're getting to that stage where it's youth-team football. 'And you might want to start thinking about going and playing somewhere else because it's very difficult now to just go straight through. And the best way to develop is by playing games and playing men's football. 'And it's easier to do that somewhere else at a lower club. And I feel like that's what I missed out on, I think.'
