
Estate near Dunblane with links to Stagecoach tycoon put up for sale after controversial mansion demolition
An estate near Dunblane with links to Stagecoach tycoon Ann Gloag has gone up for sale after the mansion that once stood on it was controversially demolished.
The sprawling Glassingall Estate is being marketed for offers over £900,000.
It comes five years after Glassingall House, which was owned by Stagecoach co-founder Dame Ann Gloag through investment companies she controls, was knocked down without a demolition warrant being in place.
The demolition sparked a police probe, and a contractor was later fined for contravening bat protection laws at the site.
Savills is now marketing the land as an 'exciting prospect of building on the site of a demolished country house' – though no planning permission for any development is currently in place.
Glassingall Estate, just north of Dunblane – close to the A9 – spans about 91 acres, including woodland and fields.
The land comes with grounds that could be turned back into gardens, a hardcourt tennis court that requires reinstatement and five grazing fields that total 47.6 acres.
The driveway is located off the B8033, and there is secondary access onto the A9 to the south.
Harry Maitland, property agent for Savills, said: 'Glassingall Estate offers the unique opportunity to create a spectacular country home (subject to obtaining planning permission) set in about 91 acres of stunning grounds.'
The original Glassingall Manor House was built in a Gothic Baronian style.
Constructed in 1864, it stood for more than 100 years and was demolished in 1966.
The following year, a new mansion – which had a swimming pool, squash court and tennis court – was erected.
In 2019, Dame Ann and Active Stirling, the local authority's sports management company, planned to use the estate to create an outdoor centre.
The plans included 135 holiday lodges, an activity centre with water sports, residential accommodation, play areas, parking and a reception building.
However, these proposals were met with opposition over the impact on nearby residents and never went ahead.
The contractor who was ultimately fined over the demolition was said to have acted on the instructions of businessmen described as 'friends of the Gloag family', a court heard.
It was also revealed that the house had been bought by Glasingall Estate Ltd for £850,000 in March 2018 and that the owner was Dame Ann, the co-founder of the Stagecoach bus firm.

Thanks Bank of Mum and Dad – now get out of my life
Let's cut a long story short. Last year, my parents gave me a deposit on a flat in London. I'm very grateful for said deposit, which took me out of the rubbish rental market and granted me financial independence. I have used the money wisely, as promised. I have not run off with the cash, or spent it on booze, drugs, expensive modern art or any of the tosh I am told to buy on Instagram daily. My parents trusted me because, despite occasionally writing pieces critical of their generation, they know me to be a sensible, level-headed 24-year-old. Or at least, most of the time. And the money was a gift. Made with one eye on inheritance tax, as all sensible middle-class house deposit gifts are, but without strings attached. But this is not always the case. The Bank of Mum and Dad is coming under ever-increasing pressure. More than 170,000 people received money from their parents last year – to the tune of £55,572 each – estate agent Savills has estimated. There's a lot of familial obligation wrapped up in those numbers. In a housing market where more than half of buyers are accepting money from their parents to get on the ladder, the promise of a deposit can be an effective bargaining tool. When The Telegraph writes about these generous gifts, we are inundated with emails from parents who want to give away their money – but also keep it. Some set up complicated loan agreements or trusts which can't be touched until certain conditions are met, while others split ownership across multiple generations. There are many ways in which parents look to protect their cash, even when it's not really theirs any more. All of these options are much more thorny than a simple gift. When I hear divorce lawyers explain that increased demand for prenuptial agreements is driven by parents looking to protect the money they've given to grown-up offspring, my stomach churns. Isn't that the very best way to ensure your children never want to speak to you again? So a plea. If you, as a parent, are thinking about helping your adult offspring on to the ladder, a truly honourable gesture, remember that this does not mean they revert to being dependent children. Resist the temptation to add strings – for the sake of familial peace – and crucially, remember that today's young people are hardly the first generation to receive a helping hand. Fair enough if you've made it clear that the money is a loan and repayment is expected. But a gift with reservations is no real gift. If you aren't prepared to hand over the cash with a decent dollop of trust, then maybe you'd be better off keeping the money.
