GHMC fast-tracks monsoon works in LB Nagar segment
To address the issue of flooding in several areas, the storm water drain network in L B Nagar is being revamped. In the last few years, heavy rains have been lashing the city within a short span and this was resulting in flooding of several localities in L B Nagar like never before. Especially, the residents have to live with excess floodwater from nala which is causing damage each year to the surrounding colonies. Nearly five residential colonies get inundated during heavy rains, but now after these works there would be no flooding in these areas in future.
On Thursday, Commissioner RV Karnan conducted an inspection of several development projects in the LB Nagar zone. He urged officials to take immediate action to finalise the storm water drainage systems and address any unfinished drainage projects to safeguard low-lying areas from flooding in the forthcoming monsoon season. He was accompanied by LB Nagar Zonal Commissioner Hemant Keshav Patil.
The Commissioner inspected the works of 350 metres of storm water box drain construction from Nagole Sai Nagar to the RTO office, as well as the SRDP National Highway flyover project and initiatives aimed at enhancing various sports facilities in the area beneath the Bairamalguda Flyover.
Karnan instructed the engineering officers to take immediate action to finalise the storm water drainage system designed to mitigate flooding in the low-lying regions of LB Nagar zone, as well as to complete all outstanding projects related to the Nala initiated by SNDP before the upcoming monsoon season. He urged them to keep him updated on any challenges they might encounter in this process.
EE Ramesh Babu provided a clear explanation regarding the impact of the storm water construction, stating that it would protect approximately five colonies from flood inundation. When inquired about the timeline for completion, he confidently assured that the project would be finished within a month.
The Commissioner instructed the EE to finish the project before the upcoming monsoon. Additionally, the Zonal Commissioner has been directed to take all essential measures to ensure the completion of the unfinished box drain and nala development projects.
Later, the Commissioner inspected the work undertaken on the SRDP flyover at Uppal X Roads and the National Highway extending to Narapally CPRI during this visit.

Hectic road digging creates blockade for commuters
Predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the month of August have done nothing to dampen the digging drive of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). After biding time the entire summer, the contractors of the Strategic Nala Development Programme have now started digging up roads and road margins to lay storm water drains. This digging activity has turned traffic congestion into a daily problem for commuters. At Chintalkunta Y junction near LB Nagar, the road digging started about a month ago, to lay storm water pipelines along the RTC Colony main road. The project began while a ban on road cutting was in place in view of rains. Now, the route has been rendered unusable for vehicles, especially four-wheelers, on the connecting road towards the Sagar Ring Road. The deep trenches for laying 900 mm pipes has also restricted movement on the flyover from Bairamalguda towards LB Nagar Junction, and to proceed on the Inner Ring Road (IRR) towards Nagole. Also out of bounds for many vehicles is the Chintalkunta underpass landing on National Highway 65. Residents of several colonies around Jahangir Nagar, RTC Colony, Venkata Ramana Colony, and Padmavathi Colony are bearing the brunt of the ongoing digging work. 'In the absence of the Chintalkunta underpass, to get to the other side of the road, we need to take a round about either from the Vanasthalipuram side or travel up to LB Nagar junction, both of which increase the fuel cost tremendously. This has become a pain on a daily basis,' complained M. Srinivas Rao, a working professional who resides in Venkata Ramana Colony. For the commuters to Nagole, it is even more cumbersome as it adds up to over two kilometres up to the IRR, costing not only fuel, but extra time too during peak hours. Locals vouch that the RTC Colony main road was laid two to three years ago. While a cement concrete road is built with a lifespan of a minimum of 10 years, this road has been dug up much ahead of time, due to the absence of drainage. 'Every time it rains, the road gets filled with flood water from all the surrounding colonies, making it difficult for pedestrians to negotiate their way. Last time it was re-laid, they did not bother to provide for storm water drainage. There were only sewerage lines to take in the flood water too, and it was a problem. Now, they are breaking the road to lay the drains,' related Abdul Lateef (name changed), a shopkeeper on the road.

TGiCCC steps up monsoon response, issues red and orange alerts in Telangana
With relentless rain lashing several parts of Telangana, the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGiCCC) has upgraded its monsoon preparedness, issuing red and orange alerts across key districts and activating an emergency response mechanism. A red alert has been sounded for Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, and Peddapalli districts, based on the India Meteorological Department's forecast and field reports indicating a high likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. District Collectors, Commissioners and Superintendents of Police, and local control rooms have been put on notice, as the State braces for possible flood-like conditions, road blockages, and the need for swift rescue efforts. Neighbouring districts including Adilabad, Nizamabad, Jagitial, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem are under an orange alert, where heavy rainfall is expected to cause localised disruptions. In a bid to ensure early warning and timely action, the alerts have been disseminated via the Sachet Integrated Alert Platform, allowing district authorities and the public to take precautionary measures in real time. The Multi-Agency Operations Centre (MAOC) at the TGiCCC is now functioning round the clock, coordinating with police units, disaster response teams, municipal officials, and other civic departments. Local-level emergency protocols have been activated, and all concerned departments are on high alert. Joint Action Teams comprising personnel from HYDRAA/Disaster Response Force, GHMC, the Water Board, TGSPDCL, and law and traffic police have been deployed to monitor and address waterlogging spots within the GHMC limits. Key support systems currently active include live weather and flood tracking through satellite feeds, GIS-based incident mapping, camera surveillance analysis, inter-agency resource coordination, and mass communication via alerts and social media in affected areas. Citizens are urged to stay tuned to official updates and cooperate with authorities during this ongoing spell of heavy rain.

Heavy Rain Warning for Telangana: Residents Advised to Stay Indoors
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall across the state of Telangana starting today, with torrential downpours already affecting several districts since Wednesday morning. Hyderabad and its suburbs are experiencing particularly intense rainfall, prompting authorities to advise citizens to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Commuters have shared their frustrations, likening the experience of being stuck in traffic to the mythological figure Abhimanyu trapped in the Padma Vayuham. Calls for assistance to emergency services have resulted in delays, as operators attempt to identify the relevant police station for those reporting traffic issues. In light of the anticipated weather conditions, motorists are advised to consider alternative routes and to limit travel unless necessary. Officials continue to stress the importance of staying safe and keeping off the roads during this hazardous period.
