City civic chief takes stock of SNDP works at Musheerabad
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner RV Karnan inspected the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) drain from Nagamaiah Kunta to Padma Nagar in Musheerabad circle under Secunderabad constituency. During the inspection, RV Karnan directed engineering officials to send proposals for sanction of necessary funds and to complete the unfinished drain works immediately. He also ordered the construction of slab work and boundary walls on the open drain to prevent any untoward incidents. Karnan warned the engineering officials that in case of accidents due to failure to put up warning boards, either during the rainy season or during road repairs, disciplinary action would be taken against the concerned engineer. The commissioner issued directions to the teams to initiate safety infrastructure measures including a safety link mesh and parapet wall to safeguard residents and ensure compliance with urban standards.

HYDRAA amps up drive to remove encroachments, clear open nalas
Hyderabad:With the ongoing rainy season, Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) took a decisive measure to prevent stormwater drain overflow in the city. The teams are removing existing obstructions in the drains is crucial to controlling urban flooding. On Friday, the HYDRAA cleared key obstacles to ensure the smooth flow of floodwater in Nallagandla. The work on the canal is expected to accelerate the construction of a 2-kilometer floodwater drainage canal originating from Nallagandla Lake. According to HYDRAA, the canal is being developed under the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP). The works were stalled due to encroachments along the planned route. While some property owners removed unauthorized structures voluntarily, others resisted, delaying the project. With the project at a standstill, only 230 meters of work completed, SNDP officials sought assistance from HYDRAA. At the same time, residents from flood-prone colonies filed complaints, urging immediate action. The problem arose in the HUDA Colony, where part of an apartment boundary wall and other constructions were found on the canal's path. Similar encroachments were reported in other areas as well. On Friday, HYDRAA intervened and removed illegal constructions along the nala, clearing both sides of the canal. This has allowed construction to resume. The canal passes from Nallagandla Lake through Doctors Colony, Rail Vihar, Nallagandla HUDA Colony, Old Serilingampally Village, and Netaji Nagar, and merges with the main nala at BHEL Crossroads. These areas have faced frequent flooding during monsoons due to blocked water flow. Additionally, on Friday, HYDRAA successfully cleared the debris from the blocked drains, culverts, open nalas, and flood canals in various parts of the city. Given the significant amount of waste being dumped into open nalas, the HYDRAA Monsoon Emergency Team (MET) and HYDRAA Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams have prioritized desilting efforts in drains and culverts. Through this initiative, the HYDRAA teams have effectively removed the waste in the flood canals located in Madhuranagar and Krishnanagar within the Yousufguda area. Furthermore, the teams tackled the garbage that had accumulated in the drains of Janardhan Reddy Nagar in Gachibowli. They also cleared the waste from the nala in Markandeya Colony, in Kapra Circle. The silt from the nala stretches from Mantrala Cheruvu to Jillelaguda Cheruvu, near RCI Road and Mithila Nagar in LB Nagar Circle, using JCB machinery. On Thursday, the HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath inspected several major drains and flood-prone areas. After witnessing extensive encroachments firsthand, he immediately ordered their removal. The Commissioner stressed that preventing such flooding this year is a collective responsibility.

GHMC chief orders swift action on Durgam Cheruvu drainage issue
Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan has instructed officials to promptly address the drainage issue at Durgam Cheruvu. On Thursday, the Commissioner inspected the situation alongside the Zonal Commissioner and other relevant officials. During the inspection, the GHMC Commissioner directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to regularly desilt the sewer lines and take full ownership of their maintenance. This, he stressed, is crucial to prevent sewage overflows onto walking tracks and to eliminate the entry of sewage into the lake, thereby ensuring a clean and hassle free environment for visitors. He further directed the Executive Engineer of the Lakes division to expedite the diversion of the sewage pipeline. The Raheja CSR team was advised to enhance park amenities to improve the overall aesthetics of the lake area. During the visit, the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was also reviewed, with a recommendation to conduct NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) water testing in addition to existing third party checks. The inspection also included a review of the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) stormwater drain (SWD) works. Officials were instructed to complete this work by September. The Zonal Commissioner was requested to review the progress weekly and ensure that any issues are addressed promptly.

Council debates on stormwater drain planning, de-silting operations
A major planning flaw in the construction of storm water box drains as part of the Strategic Nala Development Programme is resulting in the inundation of the colonies on the lower end of the drains. The issue was flagged by the council members of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday, during the general body meeting. Corporator from Gaddiannaram division Baddam Prem Maheshwar Reddy pointed out that the engineers ought to have widened the drains from the lower end to the upper end. Instead, they chose to go the other way round, due to which the low-lying areas are facing the brunt. 'As the drain is widened in the upper reaches, its capacity is enhanced, and all the sewage and silt flowing in it are getting deposited in our colonies where the drain capacity is limited, hence resulting in inundation,' Mr. Prem Maheshwar Reddy complained. Kothapet corporator Naikoti Pavan Kumar too echoed this view, when he pointed out the issue of inundation faced by residents around RK Puram due to flood water arriving from LB Nagar through the newly enhanced 900 mm dia pipeline. The outlet in Alkapuri drain which is receiving the flows is not properly aligned, leading to inundation, he said. Member of Parliament Eatala Rajender raised the issue of double bedroom housing units remaining vacant at several locations and advised the government to shed the mental block of prime real estate which works against accessible housing for the poor. He also advocated for sewerage and stormwater pipelines with a planning for coming 20-30 years, as road cutting component is more expensive than the pipeline. Separation of stormwater drains from sewerage lines is the need of the hour as mixing of both is increasing the burden on the sewage treatment plants. 'Building permissions should be issued based on the carrying capacity of the sewage lines,' he said. Citing instances of inundation in Qutbullahpur and Moula Ali, he said carrying capacity of the drains has been compromised. He also stressed on devising alternatives for the unmanned railway crossings, and advised the authorities to focus on creating roads where they are not available rather than repairs to the roads where they exist. Several complaints were raised by members about absence of de-silting operations till now. BJP member Shankar Yadav said only 10-12% of de-silting operations have been completed this year so far, while pointing out the inundation due to blockage of Afzal Sagar canal due to trash. MIM corporator Mirza Saleem Baig raised questions about non-functioning streetlight, and asked why tenders had not been called earlier, when the officials knew that the agreement with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited for operation and maintenance of streetlighting would end on April 30. He claimed that 50-60% of the lights were not functioning. MLA Mohammed Majid Hussain flagged the issue of transfer stations overflowing with unlifted garbage due to the 'solid waste concessionaire refusing to lift unless paid'. With Bakrid around the corner, if trash is not lifted, it will be dumped in front of GHMC zonal offices, he threatened. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan attributed the issue to the trouble between the concessionaire agency and its vendors, and assured to sort it out soon. Questions were also raised about the status of sports complexes, non-lifting of green waste, advertising policy and others. Newly elected MLC Vijaya Shanthi attended the council meeting for the first time, drawing attention. The meeting observed two minute silence for the victims of Pahalgam terrorist attack and Gulzar Houz fire accident.

GHMC fast-tracks monsoon works in LB Nagar segment
Hyderabad: To prevent flooding in various areas in L B Nagar constituency, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has paced up the works for the upcoming monsoon season. The civic body took up Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) works in the constituency including the SW drain in five areas of the zone. To address the issue of flooding in several areas, the storm water drain network in L B Nagar is being revamped. In the last few years, heavy rains have been lashing the city within a short span and this was resulting in flooding of several localities in L B Nagar like never before. Especially, the residents have to live with excess floodwater from nala which is causing damage each year to the surrounding colonies. Nearly five residential colonies get inundated during heavy rains, but now after these works there would be no flooding in these areas in future. On Thursday, Commissioner RV Karnan conducted an inspection of several development projects in the LB Nagar zone. He urged officials to take immediate action to finalise the storm water drainage systems and address any unfinished drainage projects to safeguard low-lying areas from flooding in the forthcoming monsoon season. He was accompanied by LB Nagar Zonal Commissioner Hemant Keshav Patil. The Commissioner inspected the works of 350 metres of storm water box drain construction from Nagole Sai Nagar to the RTO office, as well as the SRDP National Highway flyover project and initiatives aimed at enhancing various sports facilities in the area beneath the Bairamalguda Flyover. Karnan instructed the engineering officers to take immediate action to finalise the storm water drainage system designed to mitigate flooding in the low-lying regions of LB Nagar zone, as well as to complete all outstanding projects related to the Nala initiated by SNDP before the upcoming monsoon season. He urged them to keep him updated on any challenges they might encounter in this process. EE Ramesh Babu provided a clear explanation regarding the impact of the storm water construction, stating that it would protect approximately five colonies from flood inundation. When inquired about the timeline for completion, he confidently assured that the project would be finished within a month. The Commissioner instructed the EE to finish the project before the upcoming monsoon. Additionally, the Zonal Commissioner has been directed to take all essential measures to ensure the completion of the unfinished box drain and nala development projects. Later, the Commissioner inspected the work undertaken on the SRDP flyover at Uppal X Roads and the National Highway extending to Narapally CPRI during this visit.
