British deputy high commissioner Kolkata & IBSA promote wildlife conservation through photography

Time of India6 hours ago

The British Deputy High Commission Kolkata and the Indo-British Scholars' Association (IBSA) recently collaborated to highlight wildlife and our living planet through the powerful medium of visual storytelling.
The event, held at the British Club Kolkata on June 10 underscored the critical importance of our fragile planet and the urgent need for conservation efforts. It emphasised the vital role of wildlife photographers in documenting animal movements, studying habitats, and illustrating the impact of climate change and human influence on their existence.
Reflecting on the initiative, Dr Andrew Fleming stated,
'
Photography, and by extension film, is a powerful medium to capture different themes and inspire change.
Wildlife is one such example and has been a vehicle of success for the conservation of many of the world's best-known endangered species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger. But this is just the tip of the iceberg—threats to our natural world continue to mount. Plastic pollution, this year's World Environment Day theme, is a scourge for land and sea creatures alike.
Some scientists predict that by 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. So my message is that we must do more to tell the stories of environmental impact in all our collective work and encourage more young people to follow in our footsteps

Simon Hill, president of the Royal Photographic Society, UK, also remarked,
'
For over 170 years, the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain has championed photography as a medium that informs, inspires, and helps shape public opinion. In an age of overwhelming ecological danger, photography has become one of the most powerful tools in the conservationist's arsenal. From documenting environmental collapse to stirring empathy for endangered species, a single photograph can translate the most complex scientific realities into immediate emotional truths.
Photographs transcend language barriers to resonate with and impact a global audience. At its most effective, environmental and conservation photography doesn't just bear witness—it galvanises action. Through its awards, publications, and bursaries, the Royal Photographic Society recognises, honours, and supports the globally important work of photographers who are causing the world to take notice and take action.

Zemithang pioneers waste mgmt in eastern Himalayas

Guwahati: Zemithang, a remote Himalayan area bordering China in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district which served as the Dalai Lama's first refuge after leaving Tibet, has established itself as an exemplar of community-led waste management in the eastern Himalayas. The flagship Himalayan Fringes Project demonstrates how isolated regions can develop circular, sustainable waste management systems. The local community established the Pangchen Valley Waste Management Committee, developing its own waste policies and regulations while creating a decentralised collection and transport system. The community now independently manages waste banks, fee collection, and monthly Swachhata Diwas. The Further and Beyond Foundation, through its Himalayan Fringes Project, has facilitated a community-based model emphasising local ownership, environmental protection, and grassroots governance. "With increasing tourism and urbanisation impacting the region's fragile ecology, the initiative now covers 14 villages in the Pangchen Valley. Core components include household-level segregation, monthly Swachhata Diwas, a Material Recovery Facility, and a user-fee-based system to ensure long-term sustainability," said Zemithang circle officer Deewan Mara on Wednesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Take a Look) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo The initiative involves collaboration between the circle officer's office, Border Roads Organisation, gaon burahs, SHGs, and monitoring committees. The Green Guardian School Programme, operating under the Himalayan Fringes initiative, enables students at institutions like Lumpo Government Higher Secondary School to operate waste banks, organise clean-ups, and promote environmental awareness. "This is not just a waste management project. It's a cultural shift, led by the people, for the place they love," said a spokesperson from the Further and Beyond Foundation, a non-profit organisation. The Zemithang Valley Waste Management Policy prohibits single-use plastics under 50 microns, with recyclables transported to Assam facilities.

Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi among top performers in school education during 2023-24: MoE report

Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat and Odisha are among top performers in the 2023-24 Performing Grade Index that assesses school education at the district level, according to a report of the Ministry of Education . Other top performing states and Union territories include Kerala, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Goa, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, the report said. Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) measures the performance of states and UTs in school education. Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) has so far released PGI report for states and UTs for the years 2017-18 to 2021-22. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 'Swing is King': Mr. Hemant's Strategy Finally Explained in Free Session TradeWise Learn More Undo Meghalya has been adjudged as the lowest performing state in the latest report. Puducherry, Himachala Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and West Bengal are among the average performers as per the index. Live Events "The PGI has been conceptualized as a tool to catalyse transformational change in the field of school education with an objective of assessment of the relative performance of all the districts in a uniform scale," a senior ministry official said. The PGI-D structure comprises total weightage of 600 points across 74 indicators, which are grouped under six categories -- Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure Facilities and Student Entitlements, School Safety and Child Protection , Digital Learning and Governance Process. These categories are further divided into 11 domains -- Learning Outcomes and Quality, Access Outcomes, Teacher Availability and Professional Development Outcomes, Learning Management, Learning Enrichment Activities, Infrastructure Facilities, Student Entitlements, School Safety and Child Protection, Digital Learning, Funds Convergence and Utilisation, Attendance Monitoring Systems and School Leadership Development. Following the same approach of state PGI, districts are graded. In PGI-D, the nomenclature for PGI scores is classified into various grades. Highest achievable grade in PGI-D is 'Utkarsh', which is for districts scoring more than 90 per cent of the total points in that category or overall. The category and overall scores are then reduced by an equal width of 10 per cent of total points in that category or overall points for arriving to the next grade.
