ETtech Exclusive: Naveen Tahilyani steps down as Tata Digital CEO after just a year at the helm

Economic Times22-05-2025

In a fresh top-deck churn, Tata Digital CEO and MD Naveen Tahilyani has stepped down just a year after being handpicked by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to steady the group's digital commerce ambitions. His abrupt exit underscores the Tata group's ongoing struggle to stabilise leadership at its much-hyped superapp venture, Tata Neu.
ADVERTISEMENT Tahilyani, a Tata veteran who was previously CEO of Tata AIA Life Insurance, was tasked with bringing executional rigour, financial discipline, and consumer focus to a fragmented digital portfolio spanning BigBasket, 1mg, Tata Cliq, Tata Croma, and the Neu app. His mandate: fix the superapp's faltering strategy and stitch together the group's digital assets into a cohesive platform.
UK-headquartered life insurer Prudential plc on Thursday announced Tahilyani's appointment as regional CEO for India, Africa, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, with additional responsibility for the health vertical.
Over the past few months, however, Tahilyani's role was gradually narrowed as plans emerged to carve out BigBasket and 1mg for separate fundraises and eventual IPOs.
This marked the end of the road for Tata Digital as a unified digital platform seeking external capital—undercutting the very premise of the superapp strategy Tahilyani had brought in to scale. Tata Neu, the group's superapp, launched in April 2022 aimed at consolidating its various consumer-facing digital businesses into one integrated platform. 'There was angst that independent business units like 1mg and BigBasket weren't allowed operational freedom,' said a person familiar with internal discussions. 'Tahilyani began shifting Tata Neu's positioning from a central command to a shared digital platform,' said a person in the know.

' It was clear that Tata Digital as an entity had become less relevant with BigBasket and 1mg in talks to raise independent funding. Plans to go to market to shore up capital as consolidated unit never frutified,' another person close to the matter said on the condition of anonymity. ET reported on April 7 that that the Tata group is preparing to raise $1.3 billion for its digital assets BigBasket and 1mg.
Strategy changes, limited traction
ADVERTISEMENT Under Tahilyani, the group recalibrated focus on core Tata-owned brands such as Croma and Tata Cliq. Backend integration plans across BigBasket, 1mg, and Tata Cliq were put on hold to preserve brand identities and avoid a clunky user experience—an issue that plagued Neu's early rollouts. It accounted for less than 10% of gross sales for BigBasket and 1mg, according to insiders, signalling limited consumer adoption and weak cross-platform synergies.
ADVERTISEMENT 'There's now a clear view that unless Neu delivers a seamless, value-led experience, it cannot subsume the identities of stronger consumer brands,' one source said.
Still, Tahilyani had laid down some groundwork. He was working closely with unit heads to align strategies and had approved 1mg's upcoming offline expansion into standalone pharmacies and diagnostic labs, as reported by ET on May 14.
ADVERTISEMENT Leadership churn continues
Tahilyani's tenure came on the back of continued leadership churn at Tata Digital. Since the exits of Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal in 2022 and multiple senior leaders over the past two years, the company has seen successive overhauls of its top team, including one initiated under Tahilyani himself.
Chandrasekaran, who chairs Tata Digital's board, had reportedly grown impatient with Neu's sluggish progress and had hoped Tahilyani would accelerate execution and prepare the business for possible external investment or eventual IPOs of BigBasket and 1mg.'This was always going to be a tough turnaround,' a senior executive said. 'The digital foundation is in place, but scale and traction remain elusive.'
The Tata group had renewed its Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsorship for another five years to boost Neu's visibility, signalling continued investment in its digital play.

Matrimony fraud: Bengaluru bizman falls for invest & earn bait, bride-to-be flees with Rs 38.8L

Bengaluru: A 25-year-old businessman's search for love on a matrimonial website turned into a financial nightmare when he was conned out of a whopping Rs 38.8 lakh in an elaborate investment scam that was marked with fake video calls, a family of fraudsters, and promises of high returns. Sagar (name changed), who runs a pre-owned motorcycle business in east Bengaluru, thought he struck gold when a woman named Lakshmi Priya swiped right on his profile within minutes after he posted it on a website this March. Priya claimed to work with her uncle at a UK-based investment firm, and to make him trust her, she orchestrated a voice with a whole entourage of her family members, including a father, aunt, and an uncle named Srinivasa. "She sounded genuine, the whole setup looked like a real family ready for wedding," Sagar told East CEN Crime police. The two moved their conversation to WhatsApp after she shared her number (8897629918) on March 15. After several warm exchanges, she invited him for a video call on Ram Navami (April 6). That's when Sagar met her entire family, who even greenlit their future wedding and shared plans to visit Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, for marriage talks post May 15. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 전체임플란트 간단 뼈이식포함 300만원에 kimplant 더 알아보기 Undo But what seemed like a match made in heaven soon turned into a trap. Soon after, Priya pitched an amazing investment opportunity with her uncle's firm 'TRADE U' via a trading app named Bost Base. Sagar was lured in with the promise of big bucks, he started with a Rs 65,000 investment. As daily profits started showing up on the platform and a test withdrawal of Rs 5,000 worked flawlessly, he began investing more and more. Collectively, his multiple transactions crossed Rs 25 lakh. The returns, as shared by Priya, showed a dazzling Rs 1.4 crore as balance in his account. Then they told him that they were closing their trade signals and would send them for taxation. They told him to pay Rs 17.5 lakh as a tax amount and Rs 3.5 lakh service fee. He questioned the tax as he made an investment in their firm. They told him that as per the UK law, the investors should pay the taxes first and collect their profits and capital. He then spoke to Priya and informed her that he didn't have so much money. She told him she would pay Rs 5.3 lakh on his behalf and reduce the service tax and asked him to arrange the remaining Rs 13 lakh. Sagar borrowed from his friends and relatives and transferred the money to them. However, they stopped messaging him from May 27. When he tried to reach Priya on the phone, in vain. It was only then did he realise that he was scammed. "She brought her whole fake family to the scam party, this is a unique case," said an officer. "The victim was made to believe he was joining their family, but instead, he walked into a trap." Police have filed a case under the Information Technology Act and BNS Section 318 (cheating). According to a complaint filed by Baig with East CEN Crime police, his account was hacked on June 5. He immediately alerted his contacts not to click on any links or respond to the messages asking for financial help. "My friend informed me that he was sending Rs 84,000 as requested by me. I realised it was a fraud and told him to stop. Then I got to know that he received the message from my WhatsApp number. It is not the case of crooks using a random number and putting my photo as a display picture," Baig told TOI. "Within a few minutes, my son got a call from a friend who also received a message asking for financial help. My son alerted me . Before we could take steps to stop the fraud, my grandson, who was coming to India from abroad, called me and said he received a message on WhatsApp in which I asked for Rs 85,000. I surrendered my sim card, and purchased a new one on the same number. Since we ensured all my contacts were aware of the hacking, none of them transferred the money," he said. A case was registered under the Information Technology Act.

Vizag metro rail: AIIB team review project

The Beijing-headquartered Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has sent a two-member team to Visakhapatnam as part of its expression of interest in providing 60% financial aid for the Vizag Metro Rail (VMR). The remaining 40% will be funded by the State and Central governments, each contributing 20%. The team, led by Senior Investment Officer Mr. Pascal Roussel (from France), over the past two days toured all the 43 proposed metro rail stations of the first phase, which spans 46.23 km. They were accompanied by N.P. Ramakrishna Reddy, Managing Director, Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC), who briefed them on the project's scope and progress. In an interview to The Hindu on Tuesday, APMRC MD Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy said, 'We want to begin civil works by October, 2025 and are expediting all aspects of the project. The AIIB team visited the city as part of the process of sanctioning a loan (60% of the total project cost). We will prioritise Phase-1 first and will follow with Phase-2 after the international airport at Bhogapuram becomes operational.' Mr. Reddy explained that the 46-km-long phase 1 is divided into two segments: a 20-km-long double-decker system and a 26-km-long metro rail system. The double-decker will be divided into two parts – one spanning 15 km from Carshed Junction (PM Palem) to Thatichetlapalem and the other 5 km from Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (entrance gate) up to Gajuwaka. 'No other double-decker system of this length exists in India,' he said. The double-decker system will have two transport networks – on the first level, a flyover for motor vehicles, and on the second level, the metro rail. Both the levels will be on the same pier (pillar). 'This unique double-decker system will be built with an additional cost of ₹2,000 crore on top of the total estimated investment (₹11,498 crore) in the first phase. The extent of land area to be acquired will be around 99.75 acres, and its estimated cost will be around ₹882 crore as per current records. This is also additional to the project investment,' Mr. Reddy added. Currently, the AIIB has sanctioned funds for metro rail projects in e Chennai, Kochi (second phase) and Mumbai (metro line 5).
