ETtech Exclusive: Naveen Tahilyani steps down as Tata Digital CEO after just a year at the helm

Economic Times22-05-2025

In a fresh top-deck churn, Tata Digital CEO and MD Naveen Tahilyani has stepped down just a year after being handpicked by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to steady the group's digital commerce ambitions. His abrupt exit underscores the Tata group's ongoing struggle to stabilise leadership at its much-hyped superapp venture, Tata Neu.
ADVERTISEMENT Tahilyani, a Tata veteran who was previously CEO of Tata AIA Life Insurance, was tasked with bringing executional rigour, financial discipline, and consumer focus to a fragmented digital portfolio spanning BigBasket, 1mg, Tata Cliq, Tata Croma, and the Neu app. His mandate: fix the superapp's faltering strategy and stitch together the group's digital assets into a cohesive platform.
UK-headquartered life insurer Prudential plc on Thursday announced Tahilyani's appointment as regional CEO for India, Africa, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, with additional responsibility for the health vertical.
Over the past few months, however, Tahilyani's role was gradually narrowed as plans emerged to carve out BigBasket and 1mg for separate fundraises and eventual IPOs.
This marked the end of the road for Tata Digital as a unified digital platform seeking external capital—undercutting the very premise of the superapp strategy Tahilyani had brought in to scale. Tata Neu, the group's superapp, launched in April 2022 aimed at consolidating its various consumer-facing digital businesses into one integrated platform. 'There was angst that independent business units like 1mg and BigBasket weren't allowed operational freedom,' said a person familiar with internal discussions. 'Tahilyani began shifting Tata Neu's positioning from a central command to a shared digital platform,' said a person in the know.

' It was clear that Tata Digital as an entity had become less relevant with BigBasket and 1mg in talks to raise independent funding. Plans to go to market to shore up capital as consolidated unit never frutified,' another person close to the matter said on the condition of anonymity. ET reported on April 7 that that the Tata group is preparing to raise $1.3 billion for its digital assets BigBasket and 1mg.
Strategy changes, limited traction
ADVERTISEMENT Under Tahilyani, the group recalibrated focus on core Tata-owned brands such as Croma and Tata Cliq. Backend integration plans across BigBasket, 1mg, and Tata Cliq were put on hold to preserve brand identities and avoid a clunky user experience—an issue that plagued Neu's early rollouts. It accounted for less than 10% of gross sales for BigBasket and 1mg, according to insiders, signalling limited consumer adoption and weak cross-platform synergies.
ADVERTISEMENT 'There's now a clear view that unless Neu delivers a seamless, value-led experience, it cannot subsume the identities of stronger consumer brands,' one source said.
Still, Tahilyani had laid down some groundwork. He was working closely with unit heads to align strategies and had approved 1mg's upcoming offline expansion into standalone pharmacies and diagnostic labs, as reported by ET on May 14.
ADVERTISEMENT Leadership churn continues
Tahilyani's tenure came on the back of continued leadership churn at Tata Digital. Since the exits of Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal in 2022 and multiple senior leaders over the past two years, the company has seen successive overhauls of its top team, including one initiated under Tahilyani himself.
Chandrasekaran, who chairs Tata Digital's board, had reportedly grown impatient with Neu's sluggish progress and had hoped Tahilyani would accelerate execution and prepare the business for possible external investment or eventual IPOs of BigBasket and 1mg.'This was always going to be a tough turnaround,' a senior executive said. 'The digital foundation is in place, but scale and traction remain elusive.'
The Tata group had renewed its Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsorship for another five years to boost Neu's visibility, signalling continued investment in its digital play.

Vizag metro rail: AIIB team review project

The Beijing-headquartered Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has sent a two-member team to Visakhapatnam as part of its expression of interest in providing 60% financial aid for the Vizag Metro Rail (VMR). The remaining 40% will be funded by the State and Central governments, each contributing 20%. The team, led by Senior Investment Officer Mr. Pascal Roussel (from France), over the past two days toured all the 43 proposed metro rail stations of the first phase, which spans 46.23 km. They were accompanied by N.P. Ramakrishna Reddy, Managing Director, Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC), who briefed them on the project's scope and progress. In an interview to The Hindu on Tuesday, APMRC MD Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy said, 'We want to begin civil works by October, 2025 and are expediting all aspects of the project. The AIIB team visited the city as part of the process of sanctioning a loan (60% of the total project cost). We will prioritise Phase-1 first and will follow with Phase-2 after the international airport at Bhogapuram becomes operational.' Mr. Reddy explained that the 46-km-long phase 1 is divided into two segments: a 20-km-long double-decker system and a 26-km-long metro rail system. The double-decker will be divided into two parts – one spanning 15 km from Carshed Junction (PM Palem) to Thatichetlapalem and the other 5 km from Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (entrance gate) up to Gajuwaka. 'No other double-decker system of this length exists in India,' he said. The double-decker system will have two transport networks – on the first level, a flyover for motor vehicles, and on the second level, the metro rail. Both the levels will be on the same pier (pillar). 'This unique double-decker system will be built with an additional cost of ₹2,000 crore on top of the total estimated investment (₹11,498 crore) in the first phase. The extent of land area to be acquired will be around 99.75 acres, and its estimated cost will be around ₹882 crore as per current records. This is also additional to the project investment,' Mr. Reddy added. Currently, the AIIB has sanctioned funds for metro rail projects in e Chennai, Kochi (second phase) and Mumbai (metro line 5).

RCB to be sold after historic IPL 2025 win? Owner Diageo breaks silence

Image credit: BCCI/IPL Diageo India, the Indian branch of UK-based Diageo Plc and owner of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL franchise, has firmly rejected rumors of selling the team. In a letter addressed to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and its Surveillance Department on Tuesday, June 10, a Diageo India representative stated that the media reports suggesting a potential sale are purely speculative. "The company would like to clarify that the aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussion," Mital Sanghvi, the company secretary, informed the regulating body of the Indian Stock Market. "This is for your information and records." Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! According to a Cricbuzz report, Diageo's statement was in response to a query from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), where the company is publicly listed. Since speculation about a possible sale of the RCB franchise began circulating, shares of United Spirits — the Diageo-owned company that holds RCB — have seen a notable uptick. On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that Diageo is considering selling the RCB franchise. The report surfaced shortly after RCB's maiden IPL title win on June 3 — a milestone achieved after 17 years — followed tragically by an incident in Bengaluru on June 4, where celebrations turned fatal, leaving 11 dead and many injured. Virat Kohli's love for 'dhaba' food, priority for family & more | RCB bus driver shares stories Though Diageo officially dismissed the sale reports as "speculative," the ambiguity of their statement has sparked deeper speculation. A seasoned voice in India's sports business ecosystem suggested that 'being a public company, there will be a lot of pressure on reputational damage,' hinting that Diageo could be weighing its options more seriously than publicly admitted. There are also murmurs about Diageo valuing the RCB franchise at around USD 2 billion. While some industry insiders view that figure as inflated — especially when compared to Torrent's acquisition of Gujarat Titans at approximately INR 7500 crore (around USD 1 billion) — others disagree. Lalit Modi , the architect of the IPL, told Cricbuzz that a USD 2 billion valuation for RCB is quite realistic. 'A particularly special feeling': Andy Flower hails Virat Kohli, RCB after historic title win "I will not be surprised if it is sold for a higher price," he remarked, adding that comparing the RCB valuation to that of the newer Gujarat franchise isn't an apples-to-apples comparison. "I will not be surprised if it is sold for a higher price," he said , stating that the valuation of GT cannot be compared here since it was a one-year-old deal. The sale report remains speculative, as clarified by the Diageo official in the response to the BSE. "No decision is final and they may decide against selling the team, the people said, asking not to be named as the details are private," the Bloomberg report says.

Boeing books 303 new orders and hits 737 MAX production target in blockbuster May

Boeing is heading into the Paris Air Show after a blockbuster May that included booking 303 new orders and rolling out 38 new 737 MAX jets, a production rate that it has been working to reach for more than a year. The company also delivered 45 aircraft last month, it said Tuesday. It was the sixth-highest monthly order tally in Boeing's history, according to company data. The orders included the largest widebody jet deal in Boeing's history: Qatar Airways' order for 130 787s and 30 777Xs, plus options for another 50 of the long-haul aircraft. However, only 120 787s were added to Boeing's order backlog, according to the company. It did not clarify the discrepancy. The Qatar deal was announced during President Donald Trump's whirlwind Middle East tour, which included a string of high-profile business deals. One day earlier, Saudi Arabian-owned lessor AviLease ordered 20 737-8 MAX jets. Another Gulf region carrier, Etihad, said it planned to order 28 widebody Boeing jets, but it did not place a firm order, so the aircraft were not included in May's total. Canadian airline WestJet also ordered seven 737 MAX jets. The company also canceled two orders for 737s. Live Events In total, three orders were canceled during the month, making for 300 net new orders in May. Its order backlog rose to 5,943 orders as of May 31. Boeing delivered 45 aircraft in the month, its fifth consecutive month of 40 or more deliveries. The total was nearly twice as many deliveries as the 24 aircraft the company handed over to customers during the same month one year earlier. Aircraft deliveries are closely watched by Wall Street because planemakers are able to collect the majority of their payment when they hand over jets to customers. The company handed over 31 737 MAX jets, including seven to United Airlines and four to Alaska Airlines, and seven 787s, including three to Qatar Airways from earlier orders. It also delivered five 777 freighters, one 767 freighter and one 737 NG to be converted into a P-8 Poseidon for the U.S. Navy. None of the deliveries were to Chinese airlines, which stopped taking new Boeing aircraft in April as the two countries clashed over tariffs. China removed the ban after the Washington and Beijing agreed to temporarily cut tariffs. A new 737 MAX landed in China on Monday, according to flight tracking data, the first to arrive since the ban was removed. So far in 2025, Boeing has delivered 220 aircraft: 164 737 MAXes, three 737 NGs for conversion into P-8s, 28 787s, 16 777s and nine 767s. European rival Airbus has delivered 243 aircraft so far this year, including 51 deliveries in May. The company did not announce any new orders last month. However, Airbus is expected to announce several deals during the Paris Air Show, which starts Monday. Boeing said on Tuesday that it rolled out 38 new 737 MAX aircraft in May, hitting a production target that it has been working to reach for more than a year. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration capped output at 38 airplanes a month due to quality concerns exposed by a mid-air panel blowout in a nearly new 737 in January 2024. Monthly production of its best-selling 737 MAX has varied up and down in recent years as the company grappled with internal and external production problems and constraints. A strike last year at its plants in Washington and Oregon shut down production of the popular single-aisle airplane. Since production resumed in December, the company has taken a slow and deliberate approach to increasing the rate. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has said the company has to stabilize production at 38 per month for several months before asking the FAA to increase output. All six production quality and safety metrics created by the company and U.S. regulators are green, according to the company.
