College coach goes viral for blistering rant about money ruining young football players

Daily Mail7 hours ago
With the landscape of college athletics ever changing, one coach is reminding his players the real reason why they're in school and is pushing against the idea of playing college football to earn money.
Earlier this year, the so-called 'House settlement' paved the way for colleges and universities to pay student-athletes part of their revenue earned from athletics each year.
This, on top of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, means that athletes have greater earning potential in college than ever before.
Couple that with the increasing popularity and use of a transfer portal and student-athletes have become akin to free agents in professional sports.
One school suffering from that is Northern Illinois University (NIU) - which competes in the Mid-America Conference (MAC) and lost 19 football players to the transfer portal after last season.
In a blistering rant, NIU head coach Thomas Hammock railed against the changing culture in the sport and reminded his players that college is about more than jumping from school to school to earn money.
As promised, here's the full video of Thomas Hammock's impassioned remarks on the state of the transfer portal.
Hammock briefly highlighted his own experience as college athlete, saying he considers the lessons he learned in college more valuable than any financial incentive.… https://t.co/hVdRaRMPCI pic.twitter.com/bkoAweblbs

'Yeah, to me, to be honest with you, I love the challenge,' Hammock told reporters in a press conference. 'It don't bother me one bit because you know what? In life, you're going to make decisions. Sometimes it's going to work in your favor, and sometimes it's not.
'I told our team the other day, "We lost all these guys. Let's see who plays." So it's all good when people put it on Twitter, Hey, all glory to God, I'm going on the transfer portal. Let's see if they play. How many of them guys going to play or travel or get snaps?
'I was going to tweet something the other day, a picture of me, and say, You know what? I enjoyed my college experience. I didn't get one dime, but the lessons I learned was more valuable than any money you can ever pay me. And I appreciate that because that is long term. People are losing the fact that this is short term.
'I coached in the National Football League for five years. Five years, right? Don't lose focus of work the long term. Get your degree, learn valuable lessons that's going to help you in the long term of your life. That's the whole purpose.
'This is a transition from being a kid to a grown up. And I hope people don't lose focus of that. Everybody's talking about everything else besides what is the most important thing for going to college. Because if you're going to college to go get a couple of dollars, you might as well go get a job. This is too hard to go get a couple of dollars.
'Learn the lesson that you need to learn to be successful in life for the next 40 to 50 years of your life. I would do it again for free, for free, because of the things I learned. That's why I'm standing here today because of what I learned in college, not because of how much somebody gave me. That's what I would tell people.
'Parents, they need to learn that lesson, too. Stop trying to live through your kids. Go teach your kids what are the things they need to learn to be successful. That's what I'm telling my kids.
'I don't care about no NIL, no revenue share. I can care less. You need to learn things in college to get you prepared for life, to be a father, a husband, to work, everything else. Those are the most important things. That's what people are missing, in my opinion. Just my opinion.'
NIU opted-into the House settlement, paving the way for the school's athletes to receive a revenue share from the university.
The Huskies went 8-5 last season - including a program-defining victory over eventual national runners-up Notre Dame in South Bend.
But the loss of those players could set the team back as they prepare for the upcoming season in just two weeks.
NIU opens their season at home on August 30, when they host Holy Cross.

Scottie Scheffler snaps at reporter over 'ridiculous' Ryder Cup questions in awkward press conference moment

Scottie Scheffler has had enough of being quizzed on the Ryder Cup more than a month before Europe and the USA do battle in New York. The world No 1 will spearhead the American team - under captain Keegan Bradley - when they take on Rory McIlroy and Co at Bethpage Black in late September. Scheffler is currently playing in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley in Maryland and ahead of the tournament he put a stop to talk about the Ryder Cup. The tipping point came when the world No 1 was asked about what he expects from the crowd at Bethpage - and how it might compare to the atmosphere at the last Ryder Cup in Rome in 2023. 'I love answering all these questions about the Ryder Cup, but this is ridiculous. We're at the BMW Championship. The Ryder Cup is over a month away,; Scheffler said. 'If you want to talk about this week, let's talk about this week. If not, I've got practice to do. I'm getting ready for a golf tournament.' 🚨🏆🙅🏼‍♂️ Scottie Scheffler is locked in on the BMW Championship and isn't interested in talking about The Ryder Cup. @SchefflerFans — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) August 13, 2025 Scheffler made a strong start to the BMW Championship on Thursday, shooting a four-under-par 66 in his opening round. At the time of writing, he was tied for second - two shot behind the leader, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre. They are slated to do battle at Bethpage next month, when the United States will attempt to regain the Ryder Cup after a heavy defeat in Rome. Tensions boiled over at Marco Simone after America's Patrick Cantlay was heckled by European fans. His caddie, Joe LaCava, clashed with McIlroy, who later had to be restrained by his teammates as tempers flared in the car park. Earlier this week, McIlroy ruled out the possibility of taking on a dual role as both player and captain for Team Europe at a future Ryder Cup, insisting the demands of the job have grown too great.

Nationals DFA 1B Nathaniel Lowe, activate OF Dylan Crews from IL

August 14 - The Washington Nationals designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment on Thursday in the midst of his disappointing season. The move was made as Washington activated outfielder Dylan Crews (left oblique strain) from the 60-day injured list. Crews is batting second and playing right field in Thursday night's home game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Lowe was batting just .216 but was second on the Nationals with 68 RBIs and tied for second with 16 homers. He has struck out 130 times. Lowe was acquired from the Texas Rangers in the offseason for left-hander Robert Garcia. The 30-year-old Lowe spent four seasons (2021-24) with the Rangers and was a key player on their 2023 World Series championship team. He was a Silver Slugger winner in 2022 when he established career bests of 27 homers and a .302 batting average. Lowe also played two seasons (2019-20) for the Tampa Bay Rays. He has a .263 average with 105 homers and 397 RBIs in 805 career games. Crews is batting .196 with seven homers, 15 RBIs and 11 steals in 45 games. He last played for the Nationals on May 20. Crews, 23, was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft. He is batting .206 with 10 homers, 23 RBIs and 23 steals in 76 major league games. --Field Level Media

NFL makes decision on anti-racism messaging for 2025 after controversially scrapping it for the Super Bowl

The NFL is continuing its on-field social justice messaging for a sixth straight season, despite opting to scrap its anti-racism campaign at the Super Bowl earlier this year. All 32 teams will feature an end zone message of their choice at each home game throughout the season, selecting from four options: 'End Racism,' 'Stop Hate,' 'Choose Love,' or 'Inspire Change.' Once again, 'It Takes All of Us' will be stenciled in the opposite end zone for all games. The only change from 2024 is that 'Inspire Change' replaces 'Vote.' The decision comes after the league faced a backlash last season when it opted to scrap its 'End Racism' messaging for the first time since 2020 at the most recent Super Bowl, between the Chiefs and Eagles in New Orleans. NFL officials were forced to deny that the decision had anything to do with the presence of president Donald Trump in the stands for the game. Commissioner Roger Goodell also previously said that he doesn't believe the league's policies to promote diversity are in conflict with the Trump administration's efforts to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government. This season, the social justice messages will complement the league's other cause campaigns such as Salute to Service and Crucial Catch, which will also appear in end zones during select weeks. 'We're working hand-in-hand with players, and alongside our clubs, to amplify player voices and underscore what is most important to them,' Anna Isaacson, the NFL's senior vice president of social responsibility, told The Associated Press. 'For decades, the NFL and its players have been a unifying force in American culture and society that brings people of all cultures and backgrounds together to enjoy America's most popular sport. 'This is an honor and responsibility that the league takes seriously, which is why we actively invest in off-field programs and on-field initiatives that promote unity.' The league will use 'End Racism' along with 'It Takes All of Us' in the back of end zones for all international games for the second straight season. The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will feature 'Choose Love' for their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys that kicks off the NFL schedule on September 4. They will rotate all four league-approved end zone messages throughout the season. 'Choose Love' was first introduced in 2022 and has been embraced by the Bills following a shooting that killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket. 'Choose Love continues to resonate across the league,' Isaacson said. 'It has become a unifying message of healing and hope, one that many players continue to wear voluntarily on helmet decals.' Players will again have the option to display one of the five messages on their helmets this season. Since 2017, the NFL has provided more than $460 million to dozens of grant partners and hundreds of grassroots organizations through its Inspire Change initiative, helping benefit communities in need. Inspire Change has supported more than 650 nonprofits and 2,100 players and alumni, matching grants focused on mentorship, workforce development, and food insecurity.
