Heavy vehicles above 3 tonnes not allowed on Mountain Road
The Muscat Municipality is imposing height restrictions on Al Jabal Road (Amerat-Bausher Mountain Road) at four different locations.
"To improve safety and traffic flow, Muscat Municipality is installing height restriction barriers on Amerat–Bausher Mountain Road to limit vehicles over three tonnes or three metres high. Heavy vehicle drivers are advised to follow instructions and use alternative routes," a statement said.
The municipality earlier invited bids from contractors who will be responsible for all design and construction work related to the installation of height restriction signages on the road.
As the mountain road has been prone to regular fatal accidents, especially those involving heavy-duty trucks that also disrupt traffic, there have been requests from the public for a permanent solution, such as an alternative tunnel road to connect the two wilayats of Amerat and Bausher, respectively.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), a related tender will be announced this year for the tunnel project.
The Greater Muscat Structure Plan (GMSP) places lots of importance on connectivity via public transportation and less dependence on private vehicles, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MoHUP).
As per the plan, the Wilayat of Al Amerat, separated from the rest of the city by mountains, will be connected through a road tunnel in addition to the existing mountain road.
This tunnel will change the face of Al Amerat as it will help link the suburb with Ruwi through a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), those connected with the masterplan says.

Pact signed to start food delivery using e-bikes in Muscat
Muscat – EVO, Oman's green mobility provider, and talabat, a regional on-demand delivery platform, have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a six-month pilot of swappable battery e-bikes, marking Oman's first large-scale electric last-mile delivery trial. The signing ceremony – held under the patronage of H E Eng Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and IT, on Monday – came during the ministry's participation in the Green Mobility Exhibition, part of Oman Sustainability Week 2025, which began on Monday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) and runs until Wednesday. The event, which aligns with Oman's long-term target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, is billed as the country's largest platform for showcasing smart and sustainable transport technologies. The wilayat of Bausher has been selected as the first phase of implementation. Under the project, EVO will provide 10 e-bikes and three battery swapping and charging stations to talabat's logistics partners. Thuraiya al Wahaibi, logistics operation specialist at the Ministry of Transport Communication and IT (MTCIT) said, 'This long-awaited pilot project for food and ready-meal delivery using electric bikes marks a significant step toward sustainable and efficient last-mile services.' She added that the ministry plays a central role in regulating the sector and facilitating procedures related to electric vehicles and consistently seeks integration and collaboration with the private sector in various initiatives under its mandate. An official from MTCIT said the project aims to cut emissions in the transport sector while supporting last-mile logistics through low-emission delivery services. The ministry said the collaboration with Talabat and EVO aims to create practical, scalable models for environmentally friendly logistics in Oman's urban areas. The MTCIT's pavilion features projects including electric vehicle solutions, charging infrastructure, intelligent transport systems, and digital transformation initiatives in the mobility sector. The ministry further participated in a panel discussion focused on advancing green mobility in Oman. The discussions highlighted national and regional initiatives, with contributions from the Net Zero team presenting key strategies.
