Charlotte Meredith obituary

The Guardiana day ago

My daughter, Charlotte Meredith, who has taken her own life aged 36, was a British journalist who had worked for the past few years in Australia, latterly as deputy social media editor for Daily Mail Australia.
She began her career as a news reporter at the Huffington Post in London in 2013-14. Following a first-class degree in English and an MA in journalism, both from Kingston University in Surrey, she had undertaken a series of internships including at our local paper in Buckinghamshire and at the Daily Express in April 2012.
After HuffPost, Charlotte had a stint at the Independent in 2015 and then moved to Vice Media as a digital editor at Vice News, also working on the launch of the company's TV channel, Viceland UK, in 2016.
Later that year the opportunity arose for her to work in a similar role for Vice in Melbourne, Australia. 'It's only for three months, Mum,' she told me.
So I took her pug, Cloudy, and off she went – not knowing anyone – to the other side of the world, demonstrating her characteristic independence and sense of adventure. Charlotte thrived, and loved Australia – the wildlife, the bush, the beaches, the people and the food. She met her partner, Andrew Davis, and they lived together in Sydney with their three rescue cats, enjoying catching the ferry to Camp Cove for fish and chips at Watsons Bay and trips outside the city to the Blue Mountains.
The three months turned into for ever. She remained with Vice for three years, until in 2019 she became digital head of news at the Special Broadcasting Service in Sydney, before joining Daily Mail Australia in 2021. She was conscientious and hard-working, and popular with the small team she worked with.
Charlotte was born in Torquay, Devon, to me (I am now a retired lecturer) and Michael Mason, a GP. When she was five, we moved to Buckinghamshire, and after primary school she attended Sir William Borlase's grammar school in Marlow, before going to study at Kingston University.
After moving to Australia, she came home every year, except during the Covid restrictions, the last time in September, when she enjoyed British pub food and visiting her favourite haunts. More recently it was clear that her mental health was deteriorating but she successfully hid how dreadful she really felt.
Charlotte was a caring, compassionate, thoughtful, vibrant and opinionated person, and I am immensely proud of her successes and achievements. I am also certain that she had the potential to achieve so much more had she lived.
Michael died in 2010. Charlotte is survived by Andrew and me, and by two half-siblings.

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac channels legendary cartoon character with bold new look

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac stunned viewers on Friday morning by channelling a legendary cartoon character with his bold new look. The Channel Seven veteran, 43, turned heads sporting a bold moustache and eye-catching green tee during his morning show appearance, paying homage to Ned Flanders from The Simpsons. Sam fully embraced the comparison, donning prescription glasses and playfully greeting viewers with Ned's iconic catchphrase: 'Hi-Diddly-Ho, neighbour! Okilly Dokilly.' He later shared an image of Ned Flanders waving to the camera alongside an image of him doing the same and captioned it with some amusing words. 'After repeated requests to remove the beard... I said okilly dokilly... and here I am back at work making a fresh start (borrowing the emoji's glasses). Ned Flanders? Or someone on a watch-list?,' Sam quipped. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The weatherman has developed a reputation for his cheeky behaviour both on and offscreen. Earlier this week, Sam left fans divided after retuning to Sunrise after a month off with a new look. On Monday, the beloved weatherman appeared on the Channel Seven morning show for the first time since he went on 'dad leave' in May. The TV regular, who shares Margot, two, and Mabel, ten months, with fiancée Rebecca James, debuted a beard which he had grown in his month away from the show. Prior to his first day back, Sam uploaded a picture to Instagram on Sunday telling fans that if the snap of his new facial hair got enough likes he would keep it. 'If this photo gets 10 thousand likes I'll keep the beard for my return to @sunriseon7 on Monday #DadLeaveBeard,' he captioned the post, which showed him holding onto his new bundle of joy. While the Instagram picture failed to garner enough likes before the show, his Facebook post did, resulting in Sam's return to his weatherman gig with a hairy chin. However, it seems many fans were actually not too pleased with the dad-of-two's new look. 'Very good to see Sam Mac back and showing why he is the best at weather. The beard was an interesting addition,' one person wrote on a Sunrise chat forum. In May, the TV weatherman took to Instagram to reveal he would be going on one month's leave. Posting a picture with baby Mabel, he went on to express how excited he was to spend some quality time with his young children. 'This guy is officially on "Dad Leave",' Sam, who welcomed his second child last August, captioned the post. 'So ridiculously excited to have some uninterrupted time with our darling Mabel. I did the same when Margot was a baby and have vivid memories of being there as she took her first steps. 'Now to have more time with her as a toddler is an added bonus (albeit a slightly terrifying one)' he added.

I've given birth after my unique baby news left men stunned – I have no regrets

A MUM has told how giving birth is a doddle when you do it without the dad. Model Heather McCartney, 36, welcomed her second child last week after opting to use a sperm donor. 3 3 3 The single parent received stick from men who branded her desperate because she wouldn't entertain a new relationship. But Heather, who left Ayrshire for Australia, was ecstatic as she welcomed her daughter exactly a decade after she beat cancer. She said: 'I had a planned C-section and no partner there. "But my mum came all the way from Scotland to be with me, which made all the difference. 'Having a team of supportive women around, including the medical staff, felt really empowering and reassuring. 'I'm glad I did it that way—it felt right for me. "As for offers to be the dad, I've had a few messages. "But I'm just taking things as they come and enjoying this new chapter.' Heather decided to put on make-up and give herself a glam look so she could take some special selfies after giving birth. She received lots of compliments afterwards from folk who thought she looked incredible considering what she'd just endured. The blonde pin-up added: 'My C-section was calm and smooth. 'So I felt pretty relaxed afterward. People mentioned I was glowing, which was really kind. 'But honestly, I was just happy everything went well. 'Feeling sexy wasn't really on my mind yet—more like taking it one day at a time. 'People will always love a MILF, so I'm happy to embrace that with a smile.'
