Ramannakunta lake beautification gets green signal; ten sites proposed for open gyms
'The beautification of Ramannakunta Lake has been approved by the Board. We are now awaiting a No Objection Certificate from the Army since the lake falls under their jurisdiction. The project is intended not just to enhance the area's livability but also to improve groundwater recharge and local biodiversity,' said Madhukar Naik, CEO of SCB.
The proposal is part of a wider slate of urban development initiatives discussed during Tuesday's Board meeting, which saw deliberations on infrastructure, public health, and civic administration.
Elevated corridor project moves forward
The board discussed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HMDA for infrastructure development in lieu of direct cash compensation for the Defence land. Instead of depositing ₹303.62 crore into the Consolidated Fund of India, the State Government has proposed carrying out development works such as underground sewer upgrades, strengthening of the Picket and Hasmathpet nalas, and stormwater drain construction across various Cantonment wards. An escrow account, as mandated by the Ministry of Defence's corrigendum dated July 8, will track expenditures and project milestones. HMDA will also be responsible for funding any cost overruns or shortfalls.
Eye care for employees
On the healthcare front, the Board is expected to finalise an MoU with Maxvision Eye Hospital to offer cashless eye treatment to SCB employees and their dependents. This step aligns with Central Government directives allowing treatment at CGHS-empanelled hospitals at CGHS rates, thereby eliminating the need for upfront payments by beneficiaries.
The SCB has approved the installation of open gym equipment across various residential colonies and parks under its jurisdiction. The initiative aims to improve public health infrastructure and promote fitness among residents. In line with this, the Board is also considering the approval of specific locations for the installation of the open gym equipment. A total of ten sites across different wards have been proposed, ensuring equitable access to fitness amenities in multiple neighbourhoods, added Mr. Madhukar Naik.

Tea points across Karnataka to promote Indi lemons
VIJAYAPURA: With an objective of popularising lemons in the district which has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, the Karnataka Lime Development Board is taking major steps to promote its unique flavour and health benefits across the state by setting up of Lemon Tea Points. It also plans to give franchise to others to popularise the lemons of Vijayapura, which is the highest lemon growing district in the State. The initiative, which began with the launch of a lemon tea point in Indi town, has received an encouraging response, prompting the board to expand the concept state-wide. Vijayapura district is the largest producer of lemons in Karnataka, with Indi taluk alone accounting for over 50 percent of the state's lemon production. One of the key promotional strategies involves setting up lemon tea stalls at various public events, including agricultural fairs and flower exhibitions, to raise awareness about the quality of Indi lemons. Pickles made from the lemons have also been introduced, with around 200 kilograms already sold through the Indi stall. The pickles received notable demand during the recent Bengaluru Flower Show. 'The Lemon Tea Point initiative has taken off well in Indi, and we are planning to replicate it across Karnataka, including in Bengaluru, Dakshin Kannada, and Udupi in the next two months,' said Yashwantraigoud Patil, MLA from Indi. 'Our goal is to make Indi lemon a globally recognised brand. By launching tea points and promoting products like lemon pickle, we are showcasing the superior quality of lemons from Indi to a wider audience,' said H S Patil, In-charge Managing Director of the Board.

Diageo CEO Debra Crew steps down, CFO Nik Jhangiani to be interim chief
British liquor giant Diageo on Wednesday named Chief Financial Officer Nik Jhangiani as interim chief executive officer following the immediate departure of Debra Crew from the top role and from the company's board. The move was confirmed in a company statement, which said Crew's exit was by 'mutual agreement'. 'The Board has begun a comprehensive formal search process, which will include consideration of internal and external candidates,' Diageo said. Jhangiani takes over at a time when Diageo is undertaking a major turnaround effort. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to cut $500 million in costs and execute significant asset sales by 2028, according to a Reuters report. The restructuring comes in the wake of declining sales, particularly in Latin America, where excess inventory triggered a profit warning in November 2023 that hit investor sentiment, the report added. Crew had led Diageo as CEO since June 2023, having joined the board as a non-executive director in 2019. She later served as president of Diageo North America and group chief operating officer. 'On behalf of Diageo and the Board, I would like to thank Debra for her contributions to Diageo, including steering the company through the challenging aftermath of the global pandemic and the ensuing geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility. On behalf of all Diageo colleagues, I wish her every success in the future,' said John Manzoni, chairperson of Diageo plc. Since Crew's appointment last year, the liquor sector has experienced a continued slowdown, as rising inflation and interest rates have led consumers to cut back on discretionary spending. Diageo has also struggled to regain growth momentum in key markets such as the United States, the report added.
