Secunderabad cantonment named cleanest in India

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has been recognised as the best Cantonment Board for its sanitation efforts. The SCB was honoured with a Ministerial Award in the Special Category in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The award celebrates SCB's efforts in solid waste management and the implementation of innovative sanitation practices, making it the only cantonment in India to receive this honour. The award was received by SCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) D. Madhukar Naik by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi on Thursday, July 17. It acknowledges the exceptional achievements in sanitation and solid waste management across Cantonment Boards nationwide. 'Some of SCB's key sanitation initiatives include 95% coverage of systematic door-to-door waste collection, 100% cleanliness in residential and market areas, and 75% source segregation of waste. The Board also undertook extensive community engagement through awareness campaigns and school programmes, which significantly contributed to its success,' said Madhukar Naik. SCB secured the top position among 58 cantonments in the country, earning the title of the 'Cleanest Cantonment'. It ranked 11th in the national urban rankings. The cantonment also achieved a three-star rating under the Garbage Free City certification and received the Water+ certification for Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.

Ramannakunta lake beautification gets green signal; ten sites proposed for open gyms

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) gave in-principle approval for the rejuvenation and beautification of Ramannakunta Lake in New Bowenpally, marking a major step toward transforming the long-neglected water body into a vibrant recreational and ecological space. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has proposed a detailed plan for the lake's revival, including desilting, bund strengthening, stone revetment, and the creation of amenities such as open gyms, children's play areas, and a walking track. 'The beautification of Ramannakunta Lake has been approved by the Board. We are now awaiting a No Objection Certificate from the Army since the lake falls under their jurisdiction. The project is intended not just to enhance the area's livability but also to improve groundwater recharge and local biodiversity,' said Madhukar Naik, CEO of SCB. The proposal is part of a wider slate of urban development initiatives discussed during Tuesday's Board meeting, which saw deliberations on infrastructure, public health, and civic administration. Elevated corridor project moves forward The board discussed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HMDA for infrastructure development in lieu of direct cash compensation for the Defence land. Instead of depositing ₹303.62 crore into the Consolidated Fund of India, the State Government has proposed carrying out development works such as underground sewer upgrades, strengthening of the Picket and Hasmathpet nalas, and stormwater drain construction across various Cantonment wards. An escrow account, as mandated by the Ministry of Defence's corrigendum dated July 8, will track expenditures and project milestones. HMDA will also be responsible for funding any cost overruns or shortfalls. Eye care for employees On the healthcare front, the Board is expected to finalise an MoU with Maxvision Eye Hospital to offer cashless eye treatment to SCB employees and their dependents. This step aligns with Central Government directives allowing treatment at CGHS-empanelled hospitals at CGHS rates, thereby eliminating the need for upfront payments by beneficiaries. The SCB has approved the installation of open gym equipment across various residential colonies and parks under its jurisdiction. The initiative aims to improve public health infrastructure and promote fitness among residents. In line with this, the Board is also considering the approval of specific locations for the installation of the open gym equipment. A total of ten sites across different wards have been proposed, ensuring equitable access to fitness amenities in multiple neighbourhoods, added Mr. Madhukar Naik.

Trimulgherry lake rejuvenation gets SCB nod; Rs 5.8 crore project approved

HYDERABAD: The long-pending demand to rejuvenate the decade-old Trimulgherry lake, located within the Secunderabad Cantonment limits, has finally been approved during the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) meeting. The meeting was chaired by Brigadier S Rajeev, who also took oath as the new President of the Cantonment Board on Friday. The Board gave its nod to the lake development works, which had been delayed due to multiple issues, including the non-release of funds. The lake, currently reduced to a cesspool, will soon undergo rejuvenation. The total project is estimated to cost Rs 5.8 crore. Additionally, the Board approved the construction of an RCC retaining wall along the Patny nala in Rasoolpura to prevent further encroachments. Recently, HYDRAA demolished several unauthorised structures built along the nala, which was widened to 20 metres. The RCC wall is intended to prevent further illegal construction, with the estimated project cost set at Rs 1.5 crore. Due to a financial crunch, SCB has sought assistance from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), which is currently undertaking two elevated corridor projects in the Secunderabad Cantonment. SCB has proposed that HMDA assist with funding the retaining wall construction. The proposal is under active consideration, and work will commence once approval is granted, said Madhukar Naik, Chief Executive Officer of SCB.
