Richard Madeley blasted for 'disgracefully ignorant and rude' treatment of Good Morning Britain co-star - as livid viewers fume 'he's a national embarrassment!'
Richard fronted the daytime news programme with co-host Kate Garraway on Wednesday, and the pair were joined in the studio by newsreader Marverine Cole.
In a discussion on new police guidance aimed at curbing online misinformation, Marverine was repeatedly interrupted by Richard as she spoke about racial stereotyping.
'People of non-white backgrounds are [seen as] "troublemakers" whether they are asylum seekers or not,' Marverine said.
Being spoken over by Richard, she continued: 'That is a narrative that never was around when I was younger.'
As Marverine tried to expand her point, Richard interrupted, saying: 'But the more you withhold that information, when it is released or when it leaks out it has much more impact because it's a rarity.
'If you actually, completely lift the lid on this and are open every single time somebody is accused, arrested or charged.
'If you're open about who they are, where they're from, you reduce the impact of the rare occasions when it leaks or leaks inaccurately.'
Marverine maintained her composure while Richard spoke, before offering her reply.
'I appreciate that, but it goes hand in hand with a rhetoric which is across the country now which is, "It's got to be a black person, it's got to be an asylum seeker who has done this hideous thing, and if it is we're going to kick off as a nation. If it is a white person then it's okay".'
Viewers of the popular show were left furious after footage of the heated debate was aired, and rushed to social media to express their disdain.
'Richard Madeley is disgracefully ignorant,' wrote one. 'A black woman is talking about her own lived experiences that the effect online misinformation has on her as a black woman and he's loudly and constantly talking over her. He's awful.'
Another agreed, saying: 'Just get rid of Richard Madeley. He's bad for viewing numbers! A national embarrassment.'
'I wish Madeley would stop talking over Marverine, so bloody rude,' a third added.
Many pointed out the irony of Richard's interruptions, given the context of the discussion.
'Richard Madeley proving her point exactly by being very dismissive,' wrote one, while another added: 'And completely talked over by Madeley, and ignored at the end… proving her point.'
Even fans of Richard highlighted what they saw as dismissive behaviour.
One said: 'I like Richard Madeley but he has virtually dismissed everything Marverine Cole has just said, and virtually blanked her, and shown no interest in what she just said.'
'This is deeply disturbing,' said another outraged commenter. 'To watch a black woman who is articulating a lived experience being talked over by her ITV colleague who is dismissing her concerns.
'I am also surprised that Kate is just sitting there in silence. This is what black people have to face in Britain today.'
Others praised Marverine's handling of the situation. 'Bravo Marverine Cole putting Richard Madeley back in his bloody box,' one person wrote. 'What an ignorant buffoon he is.'
A second echoed the sentiment: 'Why is Richard Madeley being allowed to talk over and talk down to the only black woman on the panel?

And Richard is not the only Good Morning Britain presenter to have rubbed viewers up entirely the wrong way.
Days ago, watchers let rip at Adil Ray, 51, and Kate Garraway, 58, slamming the co-hosts as 'useless' and 'boring'.
Watchers have blasted the pair for 'annoying' habits - claiming that Adil is a 'rage baiter' who deliberately provokes guests and Kate frequently interrupts speakers.
Taking to social media to express their outrage, otherwise loyal viewers said their irritation had forced them to change channels.
'I can't watch it when Adil Ray is on,' wrote a disgruntled watcher. 'It's been going downhill for years - not many decent presenters on there now.'
Another agreed, writing: 'It's time Adil Ray was put out to pasture. I turn off when I see him. Everything that comes out of his mouth is so predictable. It's just so boring.'
A third chimed in: 'So, you've got Adil Ray, he's pretty contentious on a good day, and Kate the cackling gob on. The day just gets better and better!

Protesters in Serbia's north demolish ruling party offices
BELGRADE, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Anti-government protesters demolished the offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in the northern city of Novi Sad and clashed with police and SNS supporters in the capital Belgrade on Thursday, a day after violent unrest left dozens injured. In Novi Sad, Serbia's second-largest city, police and SNS supporters loyal to populist President Aleksandar Vucic were absent as dozens of anti-government protesters smashed the windows of the party's offices, threw out furniture and SNS paraphernalia, and splashed paint across the entrance. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday named the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Terry Cole, as Washington's 'emergency police commissioner' as she carries out President Donald Trump 's unprecedented decision to take over the Washington police department. Bondi said she's giving Cole the powers of police chief and the Metropolitan Police Department must receive Cole's approval before issuing any orders. The move comes less than a month after the U.S. Senate conformed Cole to be the DEA's leader and he was sworn in as head of the agency. Here's what to know about Cole: Three decades in law enforcement Cole was most recently Virginia's secretary of public safety and homeland security under Gov. Glenn Youngkin, according to his biography on the DEA's website. He's spent more than 31 years as a law enforcement officer, including 22 at the DEA. At the agency, he worked in Oklahoma, New York and Washington. He spent time overseas in Colombia, Afghanistan and the Middle East. The agency said he fought drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations. He was the DEA's acting regional director of Mexico, Canada and Central America when he retired from the federal government in 2020. Prior to joining the DEA, he was a police officer in New York State. Bachelor's in criminal justice Cole graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He has certificates in leadership from the University of Virginia and the University of Notre Dame Mendoza School of Business. Late-night announcement of a new job Bondi announced Cole's new role in a directive Thursday evening. It said Cole would assume 'powers and duties vested in the District of Columbia Chief of Police.' Dramatic moment knife-wielding car thief taken down by police is caught on camera
Harrowing footage has captured the moment a car thief slashed a police officer with a box knife before setting his car alight following a high-speed chase. Diesel Jackson, 25, punched two police officers, wielding a box knife, at a home in Frankston, in Melbourne 's south-east, on the evening of March 22, 2024. The officers, a man and woman, were responding to reports of a man at the property with a stolen white Jeep Grand Cherokee. When they arrived, Jackson waved a box knife and slashed one of the officers before fleeing in the stolen vehicle. Bodycam footage released by a judge to Seven News on Friday showed the male officer breaking away from the tussle and pointing a gun at the knife-wielding man. 'Put it down... Put the f***ing knife down!' he said. During the altercation, the female officer pleaded with the male officer to let Jackson go, having found herself 'trapped' alone in the room with the armed man. 'No, no, let him go, let him get out.... I'm trapped!' she said. During the altercation, neither of the officers were equipped with tasers but one of them used capsicum spray against the enraged Jackson, although it had little effect. 'Let him go, not worth it,' the female officer said as her police partner stepped out of the way to allow Jackson to go downstairs, before taking off in the stolen Jeep. Outside, the pair watched as Jackson drove off, only for him to come back and speed up as he approached them on the pavement. 'Watch out, he's going to ram us!' the female officer yelled, before ordering her partner to 'Get out of the way!' Aerial footage captured the high-speed chase through south-east Melbourne during which Jackson reportedly reached speeds approaching 170km/h. Manoeuvring through dense, oncoming traffic, the Jeep could be seen mounting kerbs and median strips before he sped over police-deployed stop sticks. The pursuit ended when Jackson lost control of the vehicle, spinning out on Cranbourne Road. He then set fire to the stolen vehicle before fleeing on foot but was apprehended nearby. The incident, which left both officers hospitalised, has renewed calls for the Victorian Government to fast-track its plan to equip all front-line officers with tasers. First proposed by the former Andrews Labor Government, the state has earmarked $214million towards funding the rollout of upgraded Axon tasers by September 2026. Chief executive of the Police Association Victoria Wayne Gatt said tasers would 'definitely have helped in the situation'. The 25-year-old Jackson was charged with 28 offences including assaulting emergency worker whilst on duty, intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and theft of motor vehicle. He was convicted of eight offences and three summary offences and sentenced to six years imprisonment with four years non-parole.
