Autopay's HandGo technology does not require a shopper to carry an external device. At the checkout, they scan their palm and a linked card in the firm's app makes the payment.
Andrzej Antoń, CEO, Autopay, says: "The solution will revolutionise shopping, especially in the wellness and sports sectors. To make a purchase, no longer will a smartphone or smartwatch be necessary - the user is only going to need the palm of their hand, as it is unique and cannot be forged or left behind."
Meanwhile, Tencent's cloud unit has set its sights on biometric payments in Thailand, according to local press reports.
The firm is exploring deals with players in the Thai financial services, telecom, retail, education, entertainment and public sectors for its palm technology, Jimmy Chen, VP, Tencent Cloud International tells the Bangkok Post.
Thailand, which has embarked on a digital transformation effort and 'Cloud First' policy, is seen as a gateway to other Asean markets such as Indonesia and Malaysia.

Polish gridlock puts belt tightening efforts at risk, ratings agencies warn

WARSAW/LONDON, June 4 (Reuters) - Poland's sovereign credit rating could come under pressure if nationalist Karol Nawrocki's presidential election win, opens new tab leads to a prolonged political deadlock that hampers efforts to tackle the large fiscal deficit, ratings agencies said. Poland faces big spending demands, including a rise in defence outlays after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and is grappling with the EU's second-highest fiscal deficit. Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who has led a surge in government borrowing since taking power in late 2023, has called a confidence vote in his government for next Wednesday to shore up the centre-left coalition following Nawrocki's triumph. Fitch Ratings said on Wednesday that the election result was likely to "continue posing challenges for economic reforms and sustained fiscal consolidation and may exacerbate institutional clashes." It is scheduled to review Poland's rating on September 5. "Weakened confidence in the government's capacity to deliver fiscal consolidation consistent with stabilising debt at a level closer to peers over the medium term is a negative sensitivity for Poland's 'A-'/Stable sovereign rating," Fitch said. The credit default swap market has leaned towards a downgrade to Poland's rating since Sunday's election, and had already been pricing in a one-notch downgrade on and off over the last year and a half. S&P Global said that the political gridlock could curb the government's appetite for fiscal restraint in the run-up to a national election in 2027 and hamper fiscal and judicial reforms, even though the economy had proved resilient to shocks previously. Both the S&P and Fitch ratings carry a "stable" outlook. And Moody's told Polish news agency PAP that after Nawrocki's victory, the ruling coalition may increasingly rely on fiscal measures to uphold support, potentially delaying fiscal consolidation. "We believe that all three agencies could express their Poland-specific concerns through the lowering of their stable outlooks to negative," Raiffeisen economist Stephan Imre said. "However, we do not believe that this would mark the beginning of a negative downgrade spiral."

Top Philippine senator to seek dismissal of Duterte impeachment case

MANILA, June 4 (Reuters) - A top Philippine senator has drafted a resolution seeking to dismiss an impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, his office said on Wednesday, which could boost her chances of political survival after an acrimonious fallout with the president. The lower house in February impeached Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, on accusations that included budget anomalies, amassing unusual wealth and an alleged threat to the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the first lady, and the house speaker. Sara Duterte faces a lifetime ban from office if convicted in a Senate trial. She has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. The resolution was drafted, according to his office, by Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a staunch ally of Duterte and a former police chief under her father's 2016-2022 presidency. A Senate source, who declined to be identified, confirmed the draft was circulating among senators. The draft seen by Reuters says the Senate did not act promptly to begin proceedings upon receipt of the impeachment article, so the case was "de facto dismissed" as 100 days had already passed. It was not immediately clear when the resolution would be filed or how much support it would have. If it succeeds, it could intensify an escalating battle for power between Marcos and former ally Duterte ahead of a 2028 presidential election that she is widely expected to contest, with Marcos limited to a single term and unable to run again. At stake is the legacy and future influence of Marcos, who has waged a decades-long campaign to defend his family's name from what he says are false historical narratives of plunder and brutality during the 1970s and 1980s rule of his strongman father and namesake. The effort to dismiss the case comes after a stronger-than-expected showing for allies of Duterte in last month's midterm elections, demonstrating her popularity and unswerving influence, despite the row with Marcos, humiliating legislative enquiries and the arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court of her father in March. The Senate's current session ends next week, which the draft resolution said was insufficient time to act on the impeachment case. A new Senate will convene in late July. "The matter cannot cross over to the incoming 20th Congress," the draft said. Marcos has called for unity among all political camps and has distanced himself from the impeachment of Duterte, which was backed overwhelmingly by a lower house controlled by his allies. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Dela Rosa's proposed resolution.
