KILSHANNIG
Heritage Society visit to Kilcuillin
On 19th May, at 7pm, the Kilshannig Heritage Society will conduct a field trip to Kilcuillin Ecclesiastical Site in Lackendarra townland and all are welcome. This site is located about 3-4 km from Gortroe village on the road to Bweeng and is near Sean Og's Cross The Post Code is P51TF67.
The visit will entail a short walk across one level field. We advise people to wear suitable outdoor clothing and to car pool as parking spaces are limited.
There are a few remains of a monastic settlement at the site while most evidence of such has been lost over time. The site dates back to over 1,000 years and could even go back to the 600's and was in use in more recent times as a mass rock site during penal times.
Kilcuillin is one of the most significant religious sites in Kilshannig Parish and its presence is one of the hidden gems that has remained almost forgotten since the time of the famine. Luckily, a renowned antiquarian named John Windele, visited the site in the 1830's and again in the 1850's and wrote descriptions of what he found. His work is the basis for most of the information we have to-day on the site.

Munster Rugby exodus continues as province bid farewell to Ireland star & ‘through & through Red'
MUNSTER have announced that Rory Scannell is to depart the club after 200 appearances in 12 seasons with the Reds. The 31-year-old's looming exit is the latest in a long line of veterans leaving for one reason or another. 3 His final outing came in Saturday's URC play-off exit at the hands of Hollywoodbets Sharks in Durban 3 Being consoled by his brother Niall after the Reds came up just short after an epic 100-minute battle 3 The centre earned the first of his three senior Ireland caps in 2017 Former captain Peter O'Mahony as well as Stephen Archer This afternoon Munster issued a statement hailing the 31-year-old for his contributions over the years. It read: "A Munster man through and through. Rory Scannell will depart the province this summer after 12 years, 200 appearances & 3 Ireland caps. "Very few players have contributed as much as he has over the past 12 years both on and off the field. Thank you Rory." Read More On Irish Sport The man himself highlighted the particular pride he felt at having soldiered alongside his brother Niall. He emphasized: 'It's a huge honour to have played for my home club 200 times, particularly alongside my brother. 'It's been a rollercoaster of ups and downs over the last 12 years, but I have made so many great memories that will live with me forever. 'I've met some great people here and made friends for life. Most read in Rugby Union 'The squad is in a great place and I just want to wish the club very best of luck going forward and I will be supporting them wherever I am.' Head of Rugby Operations and Interim Head Coach Ian Costello heaped on praise as he described Scannell's impact on and off the pitch. 'Jack Crowley he's coming for you' jokes Peter O'Mahony's wife Jess as son practices his rugby skills He added: 'Everyone in the province couldn't speak highly enough of Rory as a player and a person. 'Very few players have contributed as much as he has to Munster Rugby over the past 12 years both on and off the field. 'He is the youngest ever player to reach 100 caps for Munster and was a key member of our leadership group. 'He is the ultimate team player and an excellent team-mate, always putting the club before himself. 'An extremely popular member of the squad, he will be sorely missed and we wish him and his wife Aisling the very best for the future.' The centre's last outing was in Saturday's contentious Unfortunately Rory was the only player across both sides to miss in the shoot-out. But he did show real nerve when stepping up to convert his tougher second kick from the 10 metre line.

Former Munster and Irish Rugby Sevens player looking for ‘dominant woman' with ‘dark eyes' set to enter Love Island Villa
Conor Phillips (25), a former Munster Rugby and Irish Rugby Sevens player will enter the villa for the 12th season of the show, starting next week. He follows in the footsteps of Limerick man and former Rugby Sevens player Greg O'Shea, who won the fifth season of Love Island in 2019. When asked what type of person he is looking for, Phillips said: 'Someone who is really sure of themselves, ambitious, a bit of a go-getter and good craic." 'I like dark eyes and I don't mind a dominant woman,' he said. He continued: 'I don't like to answer to anyone else. I like to do my own thing. It's something I'm working on for a relationship. Hopefully I've improved.' Phillips joins another Irish contestant, Dublin actor and panto actress Megan Forte Clarke, who will also take part in the summer series. Having debuted for Munster in 2022, he received the news shortly after that the province would not be offering him a contract, having come up through Young Munster. 'You're in Munster and you think you are going to play rugby until you're 35 and then go on TV and all this stuff,' Phillips told the Irish Independent. 'I never thought about a job but my mom always made sure that I got my degree in health and exercise fitness in UL, I just finished that last year,' he said in 2024. Following this, he moved to Dublin to play with Terenure, playing a key role in his team making it to the Energia All-Ireland League final against Cork Con. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more At the time, while working in tech sales, he lived with Conán O'Donnell (former Connacht prop), who was in the same position as he had just come back from the Toronto Arrows. He said: 'We were on the dole together. It was very tough. I don't think we appreciated how tough it was. We just got on with it. 'Looking back on it now, it's humbling because if you had any bit of an ego, thinking you were above anyone because you played rugby, you definitely aren't when you're going into the post office every week trying to get money. 'That was quite tough. There were thoughts going through my head, 'will I go back to Limerick just to be with my mom? I'm comfortable there. Will I just pack it in and go play abroad?' The Limerick native said his biggest 'ick' in someone is being needy, or needing to do everything together. "I like someone to be independent and do their own thing and then we come together and do our thing,' he said. When asked about his claim to fame, he replied: 'I play professional rugby. I'm a winger.' When asked if he were the CEO of anything, what would it be, he replied: 'Mischief. I'm the class clown type vibe. Being in big teams and groups all the time, I'm always mixing things up, stirring the pot.' On how he likes to fIirt, he said: 'I ask girls if they want to go halves on a baby. It doesn't work, but it gets them laughing. It's an ice-breaker, not a serious question of course.' 'I'd be keeping my head above water… I'm doing nicely as a single person, but I need a relationship, I need to settle down and invest in some stocks,' he added. He listed singing as one of his hidden talents. 'My go to is Mario's 'Let Me Love You'. I've sang in front of a lot of people before,' he said. 'If it's your first rugby match you have to get on the bus and sing -they loved it.'
