Preity Zinta's rallying cry for PBKS ahead of IPL 2025 final against RCB: 'Bas Jeetna Hai'
As Punjab Kings (PBKS) prepare for their most crucial match of IPL 2025 — the final showdown against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium tonight — team co-owner and Bollywood actor Preity Zinta took a moment to pen a warm message filled with pride and motivation. The 50-year-old actor, who has been a constant at PBKS games this season, shared an emotional video montage on her social media, accompanied by a heartfelt caption dedicated to the squad. "All smiles as @PunjabKingsIPL make it to the final after a SUPER TEAM EFFORT led by our dynamic sarpanch @ShreyasIyer15, our passionate coach @RickyPonting & the entire coaching staff & everyone at PBKS. Today will be incomplete without mentioning Lockie Ferguson, Glenn Maxwell & Marco Jansen for making this final possible. One more game to go ... Bas Jeetna Hai | IPL 2025 | Sadda Punjab | Ting!" she wrote. Her visible enthusiasm — whether seen cheering from the stands or engaging with the players and supporters — has cemented her place as a fan favorite within the PBKS community. The team's path to the final was carved through a thrilling Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad, where captain Shreyas Iyer powered the chase with an unbeaten 87 off just 41 deliveries. Featuring eight massive sixes, his knock guided Punjab to a five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, chasing down a stiff 204-run target and securing their first final appearance in years. Following the tense finish, Shreyas maintained his composure until a heartfelt on-field moment saw him sharing an embrace with Preity — a scene that quickly resonated with fans and symbolized the deep-rooted connection between the co-owner and her team.

Half of employed women in Germany work part-time, only 12% among men
Around half of employed women in Germany work part-time, official figures showed on Monday. The Federal Statistical Office said new data reveals 49% of women and 12% of men in employment do not work full-time. According to the Wiesbaden-based agency, 29% of German employees work part-time, more than ever before. Overall, 77% of people between the ages of 15 and 66 are in some form of employment. The figure includes 74% of women, a major increase from the 59% recorded in 2005. The proportion of men in employment has also risen from 71% to 81% over the same period. The data also reveals major insights on gender inequality in parenthood and childcare in Germany. The part-time rate for mothers of underage children is 68%, rising to 73% for those with children under the age of 3 years old. Fathers, on the other hand, are much less likely to work part-time, with the figure falling to 8% among employed men. Top trade union official wants incentives for fair care work Labour Minister Bärbel Bas told the Sunday edition of the Bild newspaper that better working conditions must be created for women to increase employment levels. "Employers must organize the world of work in such a way that more mothers can work full-time," Bas said. In response, a leading trade union official said that the German government must offer incentives for parents to ensure care work is more fairly distributed between women and men. Yasmin Fahimi, head of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), praised Bas' suggestion but warned that women still carry out a far higher proportion of unpaid care work. "Ultimately, it remains the case that the organization of working hours is a highly individual decision, and that more incentives are needed for a better division between the sexes," said Fahimi. She told the Tagesspiegel newspaper in comments released on Monday that fathers in Germany should receive more paid parental leave, including 10 days off following the birth of a child. In Germany, two partners can in total receive up to 14 months of parental allowance while taking parental leave. One partner can receive the parental allowance for up to 12 months. If the other partner also takes time off work for childcare, this only extends the total amount of time that parents can receive the allowance by two months - often referred to in Germany as the "father months."

German Social Democrats choosing new co-leader after poll drubbing
German Labour Minister Bärbel Bas has been nominated to become co-leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), dpa learnt on Monday, as the party reels from one of the worst election results in its history. The SPD, traditionally one of Germany's two mainstream political forces, was relegated to third place in February's general election behind the conservatives and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). Following more than three years at the helm of a squabbling, deeply unpopular centre-left alliance, the SPD agreed to enter a coalition government led by the conservatives which took office last week. But the damning result of 16.4% has left the party scrambling to reorganize its leadership, with co-leader Saskia Esken on Sunday announcing she would not run again after many within the party appeared to scapegoat her over the SPD's poor showing. Esken and fellow co-leader Lars Klingbeil, who has ascended the ranks to become finance minister and vice chancellor to conservative Friedrich Merz in the new Cabinet, have nominated Bäs to succeed Esken at a committee meeting, party sources told dpa. They also suggested Tim Klüssendorf, 33, for the post of party secretary general. If confirmed, he is set to succeed Matthias Miersch, who was elected SPD parliamentary group leader last week. Both Bas and Klüssendorf are part of the left party wing of the SPD, the Parliamentary Left. Klingbeil is expected to run again for the post of co-leader at a party conference at the end of June. A trained welder, Bas, 57, has been serving as a lawmaker for the SPD since 2009. She became better known during the last legislature when she served as president of the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, the second highest office behind the president. Speaking at party headquarters in Berlin, Bas described assuming the post of co-leader as a historic task, saying she would place social security, educational equality and a modern, diverse society at the centre of her work.

Why freelancers may have to pay into the German pension fund in future
The question of how to fix Germany's struggling pensions fund is an age-old debate. Recently, however, it has become one of the key items on the desk of new Labour Minister Barbel Bäs (SPD), who must find a way to stabilise the system. Speaking to the Funke Media Group over the weekend, Bas proposed a major change to the current model: in future, she wants civil servants, politicians and the self-employed to all make mandatory pensions contributions, ending their current carve-out. Currently, government employees and MPs are exempt from having to pay into the system, while freelancers and small business owners mostly do so on a voluntary basis. Certain freelance creatives, including journalists, musicians and artists, are technically obliged to make pensions contributions under the Artists' Social Fund ( Künstlersozialkasse ) . However, since an application is required to enter the KSK, these contributions are far from universal. According to Bas, far too few people are currently paying into the pensions pot while an increasing number are taking from it. READ ALSO: How Germany needs to improve its pensions system "We need to improve the income of the pension insurance funds," she said. While in the 1960s, around six working-age people were paying into the pension fund for every pensioner taking out, this has slipped dramatically to a ratio of 2:1 in recent years. With a wave of Baby Boomers entering retirement and not enough people entering the workforce, this ratio is set to get even smaller over the coming years. Advertisement Despite the problems facing the pensions system, however, the proposal was immediately slammed by the German Federation of Civil Servants. Ulrich Silberbach, the head of the association, told ARD that the plan amounted to a "forced unification" of the pensions fund and argued that move would become expensive for local and federal governments. If civil servants are forced to pay pension contributions, he argued, their employers would be too - meaning extra expenses for communes, states and the nation as a whole. The SPD's coalition partners, the centre-right CDU/CSU alliance, also voiced criticism. "I can't find any grounds for this in the coalition agreement," Head of the Chancellery Thorsten Frei (CDU) told ARD on Sunday evening. 'No small task' Amid the backlash, however, Bas' proposal received positive reviews from social advocacy group VdK, as well as from the Left Party, who said it could ensure an even higher pension rate for retirees. SPD social policy expert Bernd Rützel also backed Bas's plan over the weekend, pointing out that it aligns with the long-standing policies of the party. Rützel, formerly chair of the Bundestag's Labour and Social Affairs Committee, told the Augsburger Allgemeine that the reform would promote fairness by ensuring everyone contributes to the system. READ ALSO: Why a row has broken out in Germany over pension reforms 'What's fair is that all make a solidarity-based contribution,' he said. Nevertheless, Rützel cautioned that incorporating new groups like civil servants and the self-employed would be complex and require a lengthy transition period. 'It's no small task,' he added.

KILSHANNIG Heritage Society visit to Kilcuillin On 19th May, at 7pm, the Kilshannig Heritage Society will conduct a field trip to Kilcuillin Ecclesiastical Site in Lackendarra townland and all are welcome. This site is located about 3-4 km from Gortroe village on the road to Bweeng and is near Sean Og's Cross The Post Code is P51TF67. The visit will entail a short walk across one level field. We advise people to wear suitable outdoor clothing and to car pool as parking spaces are limited. There are a few remains of a monastic settlement at the site while most evidence of such has been lost over time. The site dates back to over 1,000 years and could even go back to the 600's and was in use in more recent times as a mass rock site during penal times. Kilcuillin is one of the most significant religious sites in Kilshannig Parish and its presence is one of the hidden gems that has remained almost forgotten since the time of the famine. Luckily, a renowned antiquarian named John Windele, visited the site in the 1830's and again in the 1850's and wrote descriptions of what he found. His work is the basis for most of the information we have to-day on the site.
