Terrell's 3 RBIs help Auburn beat Stetson 8-5, advance to regional's championship round
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Bub Terrell had two doubles and three RBIs, Eric Snow also had two doubles and drove in two runs and No. 4 national seed Auburn beat Stetson 7-5 at the Auburn Regional on Saturday night.
Auburn (39-18) can clinch a berth in the super regionals with a victory Sunday over the winner of an elimination game between second-seeded N.C. State and the No. 3 seed Hatters (41-20). The Wolfpack or Hatters would have to beat the host Tigers twice to win the regional.
Cooper McMurray led off the second inning with a double off Stetson starter James Hays (4-1) and, after Lucas Steele lined out, Snow and Terrell hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Ike Irish and McMurray added consecutive run-scoring doubles in the third to make it 4-0.
Evan Griffis scored when Isaiah Barkett grounded out to make it a three-run game going into the fourth, when Jordan Taylor and Landon Russel each had an RBI single to trim Stetson's deficit to 4-3.
McMurray led off the fifth with a double and scored when Snow doubled to left center and Terrell hit a two-RBI double in the seventh to give Auburn a 7-3 lead.
Danny Perez drew a two-out walk and scored on a double by Barkett before a single by Jayden Hilton made it 7-5 heading to the eighth.
Irish hit a lead-off home run in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Samuel Dutton (7-3) gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings and Ryan Hetzler allowed five hits over 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his eighth save of the season.

Create Account Prosecutors also privately disclosed audio and video related to the girl as evidence during the trial that began earlier this week. Franco's attorneys have argued that the evidence submitted by prosecutors has been manipulated and distorted. Little else was known about Thursday's proceedings because the press was not allowed in the courtroom for most of them. Franco, 24, faces charges of sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. He was having an All-Star season in 2023 before officials in the Dominican Republic began investigating allegations that he had been in relationship with a minor and had paid her mother some $17,000 for consent. The girl's mother was charged with money laundering and is under house arrest. Franco, who was charged in July 2024 and is on supervised release, could face up to 30 years in prison if found guilty. He is currently on Major League Baseball's restricted list after initially being placed on administrative leave. The trial is expected to continue on Friday. BYU signs men's basketball coach Kevin Young to long-term contract extension
PROVO, Utah (AP) — BYU has signed men's basketball coach Kevin Young to a long-term contract extension following the program's first run to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 in 14 years. Terms of the deal announced Thursday were not released, with the school saying only that the contract would keep Young in Provo for the 'foreseeable future.' 'My family and I have loved our first year at BYU, being surrounded by great people, at a great university with shared values,' Young said in a statement. 'I'm excited to continue to build a program based on trying to help young men prepare for the NBA, win at the highest level and do it at BYU.' Young was hired last year after coach Mark Pope left to become Kentucky's head coach. The Cougars had a superb first season under Young, finishing 26-10 and 14-6 in Big 12 play. BYU beat VCU and Wisconsin in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, earning its first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2011 and third overall. Young also had huge success on the recruiting trail, adding highly touted recruit A.J. Dybantsa, projected as the possible No. 1 pick in the NBA draft once he's eligible. `Mr. 57′ Cristobal Del Solar flirts with 59, settles for 61 and share of Canadian Open lead
CALEDON, Ontario (AP) — Cristobal Del Solar came off the Korn Ferry Tour with the nickname 'Mr. 57.' He flirted with a 59 late Thursday afternoon in the RBC Canadian Open. Ten under with two holes left on the par-70 layout, Del Solar bogeyed the par-4 17th and parred the par-5 18th for a 9-under 61 and a share of the first-round lead with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark. 'I was just trying to hit good shots.' Del Solar said. 'I was just trying to stay in the present and have fun. That's what I was trying to do.' Del Solar, the 31-year-old PGA Tour rookie from Chile, and Olsen took advantage of soft greens on the North Course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley after rain Wednesday night that continued into the morning. Del Solar earned the 'Mr. 57' moniker in February 2024 when he shot a 13-under 57 in the first round of the Astara Golf Championship in Colombia for the lowest score in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. On Thursday, Del Solar had seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch in the middle of the round. The former Florida State player made a 6 1/2-foot birdie putt on the par-3 14th, and ran in a 15 1/2-footer on the par-4 16th to get to 10 under. On the 17th, he hit into a right greenside bunker, blasted 10 feet past and missed the par putt to the right. Needing an eagle on 18 for a 59, he drove into the left rough, then hit his second about 80 yards short of the green. 'I just want to go and execute each shot,' Del Solar said. 'I think everyone kind of sometimes gets ahead themselves and thinking of the result or whatever. You just want to go out and just hit the golf shots.' Olesen eagled the 18th — his ninth hole of the day — and had eight birdies and a bogey on the course hosting the national championship for the first time. 'Obviously, I played great, but my putting was exceptional today,' Olesen said. 'Don't think I missed any putts really out there. I definitely holed some long ones as well. It was nice to see everything go in.' Olesen qualified for the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont on Monday, holing a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Lambton in Toronto. 'I took a lot from that last putt,' Olesen said. Afternoon starters held the top eight spots and 15 of the first 18, with Masters champion Rory McIlroy bogeying the final two holes in the morning in a 71. 'Missed a couple of greens and didn't get them up-and-down, especially those last couple holes,' said McIlroy, the tournament winner in 2019 at Hamilton and 2022 at St. George's. Del Solar and Olesen were a stroke off the tournament record of 60 set by Carl Pettersson in 2010 in the third round at St. George's, and matched by Justin Rose in the fourth round in 2022, also at St. George's. Cameron Champ shot a 62, Jake Knapp had a 63, and Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Trey Mullinax and Ricky Castillo were at 64. Knapp shot 59 in March in the first round of the Cognizant Classic. Canadian Taylor Pendrith was at 65 with defending champion Robert MacIntyre. Alex Smalley, Paul Peterson, Danny Willett, Rafael Campos, Kevin Yu, Alejandro Tosti and Paul Waring.
