Blockchain and Cryptocurrency: Bilal made special assistant to PM
The Prime Minister's Office issued a notification confirming that Saqib, a UK-based entrepreneur with experience in technology and philanthropy, has been appointed with the status of minister of state. Saqib will lead efforts to formulate a national strategy for digital assets, including drafting cryptocurrency regulations, establishing Bitcoin mining operations, and integrating Blockchain technology into sectors such as land records and public finance.
He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan Crypto Council and was recently appointed Chief Advisor to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. His new role is expected to accelerate Pakistan's entry into the digital asset space.

The appointment follows a major policy announcement on Sunday, in which the government allocated 2,000 megawatts of electricity for Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence data centres.
In parallel, the Finance Ministry launched the Pakistan Digital Assets Authority (PDAA), a new regulatory body tasked with creating a legal framework for cryptocurrencies, supervising asset tokenization, and formalizing Pakistan's estimated $300 billion informal crypto market. Officials said the PDAA would play a central role in developing Pakistan's Fintech sector by attracting investment, utilizing surplus energy, and promoting innovation among the country's youth, who make up nearly 70% of the population.
Pakistan already has one of the highest cryptocurrency adoption rates in the world, with over 50 million users, and Saqib's appointment could bring structure and legitimacy to the rapidly growing sector.
An alumnus of the London School of Economics, Saqib gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic through his 'One Million Meals' campaign in the UK, which delivered over 100,000 meals to National Health Service workers and vulnerable groups. The initiative earned him an MBE from King Charles III and commendation from Queen Elizabeth II and the Mayor of London. In Pakistan, he co-founded Tayaba, a social enterprise that introduced the H2O Wheel, a tool designed to ease water collection in rural communities.
Saqib is expected to play a key role in advancing Pakistan's digital asset agenda, as the government moves to position itself as a player in the global crypto economy.

LAHORE: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar said on Wednesday that Pakistan is making rapid progress and will achieve greater strength, prosperity and dignity in the international community. Under the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership and guidance, his team is working diligently to advance quickly on economic, diplomatic and developmental fronts, Ishaq Dar said while talking to the media after inaugurating the 982nd Urs of Hazrat Ali Hajveri, known as Data Ganj Bakhsh. He added that Pakistan's focus must remain on effectively managing its affairs and journey of moving forward. He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is fully focused on economic development. Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and Provincial Minister Bilal Yasin were also present on the occasion. Dar maintained that, by the grace of Allah Almighty, the journey of progress will continue until the country emerges as a strong fortress of Islam on the world map. He stated that development is a long process but stressed that Pakistan's progress has already begun. He expressed gratitude to Allah Almighty for bestowing honour upon Pakistan and guiding it toward economic stability and diplomatic success. Regarding counter-terrorism, he revealed that on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted an extensive dialogue with a high-level US delegation comprising two dozen officials from both countries. He said Islamabad had been providing Washington with irrefutable evidence for the last year that the Majeed Brigade is part of the BLA and was involved in the Jaffar Express attack. First AI-powered port operations system to be launched today
ISLAMABAD: In a significant leap towards digital governance, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid announced on Tuesday that Pakistan will launch its first AI-powered port operations system on 14 August – marking the country's entry into artificial intelligence at an operational government level. Addressing the National Assembly, the minister described the initiative as a cornerstone of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's broader AI policy, aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency across state institutions. 'This marks a turning point,' he declared. 'The maritime ministry is leading the way in AI adoption – no more delays, no more backdoors.' He dismissed concerns over port inefficiencies, revealing that Pakistan's ports posted a record-breaking profit of Rs109.7 billion last year. He said that efforts to tighten customs procedures and combat revenue leakages are also underway, with the implementation of systems like the Pakistan Single Window and the Port Community System. He also announced a forthcoming 'bunkering policy' designed to position Pakistan as a regional hub for maritime fuel investment. But while the government touted digital progress, tempers flared on the opposition benches. On a point of order, PPP MNA Aseefa Bhutto Zardari launched a scathing attack on the federal government over the sudden shutdown of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC), labelling it a 'grave injustice' that has sparked job losses and economic distress. 'The House was assured these stores would remain open,' she said. 'Yet here we are – thousands unemployed, families in hardship, and the very promise of subsidised essentials gutted.' The USC, once a crucial lifeline for low-income households, ceased nationwide operations on 1 August. Inventory was shifted to warehouses and digital systems shut down – a move that appeared to contradict earlier ministerial assurances that no closure was on the cards. Aseefa, the daughter of President Asif Ali Zardari, demanded an immediate reversal of the decision and an official explanation from the government. 'We must be building institutions – not bulldozing them,' she insisted.
