St John's, St Stithians and KES festivals return this Easter as flagship events in Gauteng's sporting calendar.
Johannesburg is set to host its most-anticipated school sports weekend of the year, with the 2025 editions of the St John's Easter Sports Festival, St Stithians Sports Festival and King Edward VII School (KES) Easter Festival.
These events have become cornerstones in Gauteng's school sporting calendar, drawing large crowds and showcasing top-tier schools' talent.
St John's College Easter Rugby Festival
This festival attracts leading schools from across the nation, celebrating the best in schoolboy rugby.
A new addition to the Easter Rugby Festival this year is the U16 fixtures on Easter Monday.
Saints SportsFest
Celebrating over four decades, the Saints Sports Festival has evolved into a comprehensive showcase, including rugby, hockey, netball, squash, and tennis.
The 2024 festival welcomed over 1 100 participants from more than 85 schools.
The 2025 edition promises to continue this tradition, offering thrilling matchups across multiple disciplines.
KES Easter Festival

Roodepoort parkrun sees strong turnout

The Roodepoort parkrun was once again buzzing with enthusiasm on Saturday, May 18, as 444 runners and walkers gathered, awaiting the run director's signal to start the 5km run. This was event number 607 and saw 29 volunteers facilitating the event by directing participants, scanning barcodes and providing support and encouragement. The event drew an amazing 31 first-time runners, and as always, a whole host of participants celebrated the coveted parkrun milestones, including Tatum King, who completed her 10th; Vincent Joel and Helen Mittwoch with their 100th; and Sadiq Gordon with his 150th run. Desmond Campbell was also honoured on the honours board for his 200th parkrun alongside Gielie Nel with 300, and John Carstens closed off the board with 350. Also read: Easter fun at parkrun According to Pascal Simba, the ambassador for Roodepoort parkrun, a new initiative has been introduced by Discovery Vitality and the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture called Give2move, which kicked off on May 10 in celebration of World Move for Health Day. Watch video here: 'The aim is to collect 100 000 pairs of shoes in all sizes, which will be donated to those who need them the most. 'Parkrunners are encouraged to donate old or new shoes of any size every Saturday, and that will be appreciated,' he said. Pascal would also like to remind the community that the parkrun takes place every Saturday at 08:00 at Len Rutter Park in Florida Park. The event is free and is a two-lap course. Paarl Boys' High hosting Paul Roos Gimnasium is one of three games featuring in the King Price Schools Derby Series on Saturday, with Nico Malan taking on Marlow Landbou, and Wynberg Boys' High competing against Diocesan College are two of the other big fixtures. Paul Roos come from a scintillating 40–36 win over another top school, Boland Landbou, thanks to a last-minute penalty try from a rolling maul last weekend. Paarl Boys also come from a close win, clinching a 32–26 victory away at Wynberg. They sit second in the latest schoolboy rugby rankings while Paul Roos will look to climb up from fifth. Other big fixtures this weekend include Affies against KES, Rondebosch host Boland Landbou, Stellenberg entertain Oakdale and Paarl Gim welcome Drostdy. A new crèche and fishing stars in the flesh – school news to catch up on Little Squirrels have space to grow A brand-new crèche at Mandini Academy has expanded the educational offering in the town. Officially unveiled on Monday, Little Squirrels crèche will enrol children from the age of three months and up, allowing pupils to remain at Mandini Academy – previously Grade 0 to 12 – for their entire school career. 'Little Squirrels has been established in response to the growing demand for high-quality early childhood care in the Mandeni area,' said Mandini Academy principal Desigan Pillay. 'The crèche offers a safe, stimulating and inclusive environment tailored to the developmental needs of infants and young children.' 'This is where our usual 95 to 100 percent pass rate in Grade 12 begins,' said Pillay. Easter fun at Ashton Ashton International College Ballito's young Ashlings delighted parents and staff during their Easter assembly. The youngsters paraded colourful bonnets which they had decorated, showing off their creativity with pride. Principal lands angling honour Crawford International North Coast preparatory principal Justin Paynter will select the country's next great deep sea anglers. Paynter, an accomplished angler in his own right, has been appointed as a selector for the SA Deep Sea Angling Association. He will draw on his personal experience, which includes national colours for angling and multiple leadership roles at the Durban Ski Boat and Point Water Sports Clubs, to ensure the best up-and-coming anglers are given their opportunities to shine. When not actively fishing, Paynter writes a regular column in Ski-Boat magazine and champions junior development and education. Trent hooks national title Promising angler Trent de Bruyn recently won rookie of the year at the SABAA Junior Bass Fishing Nationals. The Ashton International College Ballito Grade 9 pupil also helped his province to the overall team title while fishing at his first nationals in Witbank. His excellent performance in tough, wet conditions saw him place second nationally and a nomination to represent South Africa in an international tournament later this year. Olivia dances her way to world finals Ashton International College Ballito ballerina Olivia Wynne has qualified to represent South Africa at the Dance World Cup in Spain later this year. The Grade 8 pupil earned her place by way of some fantastic performances at the Dance World Cup qualifiers in Pretoria, where she represented the Break-Thru Dance Academy. She qualified in the ballet, contemporary and showstopper categories as a soloist and as a member of Break-Thru's senior elite team.
