Odisha Police rescues 28-day-old infant allegedly sold by parents
Police rescued the infant from the house of a couple at Paikamal in neighbouring Bargarh district and handed it over to the child welfare committee (CWC), Titlagarh sub-divisional police officer Kalyan Behera told PTI over the phone.
Bhubaneswar, Jul 28 (PTI) Police in Odisha's Bolangir district on Monday rescued a 28-day-old baby girl who was allegedly sold by her parents for Rs 20,000 due to extreme poverty, officials said.
Bolangir district CWC in-charge chairperson Lina Babu confirmed that the infant was rescued from the house of a couple at Paikmal.
'We have not started an inquiry into the matter as the infant's rescue was our priority. During the day, we will launch a probe and lodge a police,' she said.
According to sources, the alleged incident of child sale came to light on Sunday from Bagdera village under Bhaleigaon Panchayat in Titilagarh sub-division.
A poverty-stricken couple, identified as Nila and Kanak Rana, has been accused of selling their newborn daughter for Rs 20,000, police said.
However, the Paikmal couple denied allegations of purchasing the child, but claimed that they brought the baby keeping in view her biological parents' poverty.
Officials said Nila and Kanak are both remarried. Nila has three daughters from his first wife, while Kanak has one daughter from her previous marriage.
Citing financial distress, the Rana couple allegedly handed over the newborn to the other family.
'We have not sold her. We gave the baby for her better upbringing, not for money,' Nila Rana told the CWC.

ED moves for restitution of attached properties of bank officials accused in Rs 560 crore fraud
Over 5 lakh depositors of Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank, who lost their money due to the bank management's alleged Rs 560 crore fraud, are likely to soon get back their money as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has restituted immovable properties worth Rs 386 crore to the competent authority for distribution of money among the depositors. The ED on Wednesday shared information on the restitution of the immoval properties to the competent authority. The central agency had provisionally attached assets under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as the erstwhile chairman (of the bank) Vivekanand Shankar Patil, a three-term MLA from Panvel constituency from the Peasants and Workers Party of India, in connivance with other officials of the bank, siphoned off bank funds for private investments. The ED's money laundering case is based on the predicate offence registered by Panvel police in February, 2020, against Patil and 75 others. The accused persons involved the bank's vice chairman, CEO and 12 directors. In June 2021, the central agency arrested Patil in the case. It was alleged by the investigators that the chairman and other officials of the bank entered into criminal conspiracy and prepared 63 bogus loan accounts using forged documents without following the guidelines of RBI and standard banking norms and siphoned off Rs 560 crore for personal gains. When the ED carried out an investigation for money laundering, they found that the proceeds generated from the crime of forgery and cheating were diverted to various entities controlled by Patil and his relatives. 'He purchased various properties and assets using the funds siphoned off from Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank Ltd. Such proceeds of crime (POC) were utilized for purchase of immovable properties at different locations in Raigad district,' the ED said in a statement. During their investigation, the ED identified and attached these properties worth Rs 386 crore in August 2021 and October 2023. The central agency has also filed a prosecution complaint (equivalent to chargesheet) on August 12, 2021, and the trial is underway. In the meantime, the liquidator appointed by RBI approached PMLA court for permission for restitution of properties. On July 22, the court passed an order to release the property at Karnala Sports Academy, Panvel, to the liquidator and put it for auction. The court also ordered the competent authority, MPID, to realise the land at Posari, Raigad by auction for distribution amongst the depositors, said the ED.

No helmet, no petrol in Indore district from Aug 1
Beginning August 1, two-wheeler riders without helmets will not be allowed to refuel at petrol pumps in Indore district, a move aimed at curbing violation of traffic rules, officials said. An order to this effect was issued on Wednesday. The order followed directions issued by the chairman of the Road Safety Committee of the Supreme Court and former judge Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre at a meeting held on Tuesday. Justice Sapre (retired) instructed that a campaign should be launched in Indore to ensure two-wheeler riders wear helmets and passengers fasten seat belts in cars. "In view of these instructions, we have issued a restrictive order stating that from August 1, two-wheeler drivers without helmets will not be given petrol at fuel pumps in the district," Indore district magistrate Ashish Singh told reporters. The violation of the order, issued under section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023, will attract legal action against the concerned petrol pump, which includes imprisonment up to one year or a fine up to Rs 5,000 or both. The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently expressed its displeasure over the blatant violation of traffic rules on the streets of Indore, stressing the need to take strict steps. Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Pradeep Sharma stated that 32 lakh vehicles, including about 16 lakh two-wheelers, were registered under various categories in Indore district since 1950. He said that approximately 21 lakh vehicles are currently running on roads in Indore district.>
