ITV Emmerdale and Coronation Street icon reveals retirement
The soap boss oversaw both Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
He will step down at the end of the month, with Iain MacLeod and Matt Cleary taking over.
On his retirement, the ITV soap icon said: 'I've always said I've got the best job in TV. I used to say it privately in case ITV stopped paying me.
'It has been nothing short of an honour, as well as a blast, to work on the soaps this last decade or so.
"We've had joy, we've had fun and we've had seasons in the sun. We've also had misery and mayhem, we've had motorway crashes, tram crashes and floods.
'And we've had stories which have squeezed your heart till tears came out of your eyes. We've covered pretty much anything and everything that people have to face in their own lives. And we've done that with care and humanity.

'With the appointment of Iain MacLeod as Creative Director and Matt Cleary as Chief Operating Officer and with fantastic stories in place for the move to five episodes a week next January, and a never-before-seen mega mash-up between the two shows, the future for our ITV Soaps is set fair.
'So it's the right time to leave and for me just to say thank you… to colleagues, to ITV and to our loyal, appreciative audience.'
During his time at ITV, Whiston has overseen a number of other shows, including A Touch of Frost, Heartbeat, Lewis and Vera.
Whiston's retirement comes just after the announcement of the first-ever crossover between the ITV soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

ITV said: "The producers, scriptwriters and production teams have conceived an ingenious way of linking the two universes, but with characters then returning to the soaps they are renowned for inhabiting in Manchester and Yorkshire.
"The episode will be self-contained, but the consequences of the high-stakes drama will have repercussions for both communities and see them linked forever as familiar faces depart and exciting new characters arrive into both soaps."

Metro revealed last week that killer John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) will claim his next victim – Mackenzie Boyd – in upcoming scenes. 'What his exit does is set the stage for an exciting next stage to John's saga later in the autumn that will leave fans quite literally on edge.' Now actor Lawrence has been put in a difficult position about the upcoming story when questioned by the Loose Women panellists. When appearing on the ITV daytime show today to talk about the ongoing surrogacy storyline – that has seen Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) decide to be a surrogate for granddaughter Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) – the awkward matter of his upcoming exit was addressed. 'I don't want to put you on the spot, but I'm going to,' asked Jane Moore. 'There's lots of rumours that Mack might be getting killed off.' Lawrence, visibly squirming, replied: 'Yeah, there are lots of rumours. And rumours they shall remain.' Quick thinking – though Denise Welch didn't look too convinced. Co-host Coleen Nolan then chimed in, asking: 'If that was the case, I'm not saying it is or it isn't, [but] do they discuss that with you straight away or about a month before it's happening?' 'It's never brutal,' he replied, being extremely cautious about his wording. 'I've always said, being in the show, I never want to be too prescriptive with it. 'I've always enjoyed doing what I'm doing. Ultimately if and when, – if, when – the time for Mack to leave comes, whether that be my choice or the writer-producers, I'll be thankful for the time that I've had.' He concluded: 'Ultimately, nobody is safe in the show. It's most dangerous village in the country.' Anchor Christine Lampard then stepped up to offer a much needed reprieve from the interrogation, introducing a clip from an upcoming episode. Great British Bake Off return confirmed as trailer reveals future of hosts and judges
Hit Channel 4 baking show Great British Bake Off will be back on screens very soon as the first look at the latest series has been revealed along with the hosts and judges Great British Bake Off is set to be back on screens very soon as the end of summer nears. The hit Channel 4 baking show has been a TV staple for years, marking the beginning of autumn as millions tune in to watch the successful and not so successful bakes unfold. Its latest series is just weeks away from airing as viewers prepare to witness the rise, and sometimes fall, of sponge, pastry, and bread. To mark a new series on the horizon, Channel 4 has released a first look as they confirm the hosts and judges, with one of them missing. Comedian Joe Wilkinson takes the helm as narrator for the eccentric trailer that appears to be set in space, before baking ingredients appear. It comes after Channel 4 breaks silence after Gogglebox couple suddenly dumped from show. He takes the viewers on a journey of life, with hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond making an appearance as animated characters. In a nod to the hosts, Joe quipped: "From it grew life, intelligent life, adorned in knitwear and leopard print." Inspired by the Big Bang, the trailer imagines a universe born not from dust and gas, but from a spectacular explosion of flour, sugar, and baked wonders. In the end, it shows it was all formed from the twinkling blue eye of judge Paul Hollywood himself. Judge Prue Leith was nowhere to be seen in the clip for the upcoming series, but Channel 4 confirmed she will be taking part. They said: " As the ovens fire up and a new batch of bakers steps into the iconic tent to face Paul and Prue, audiences can expect all the classic ingredients — warmth, humour, creativity, and just the right amount of competition. "This autumn, let the universe of Bake Off pull you in once again. Because, as the trail says, once there was nothing, and then there was Bake Off." A return date is yet to be shared with fans, but it has been teased it is "soon". Before Prue's absence from the trailer, many fans had questioned her future on the show. She replaced Dame Mary Berry as a judge on the TV favourite when it moved to Channel 4 in 2017, and has been seen alongside Paul ever since. The renowned TV chef has also gone on to host Prue Leith's Cotswolds Kitchen for ITV and last year appeared on The Masked Singer. However, she failed to return to presenting duties for Celebrity Great British Bake Off earlier this year leaving fans concerned. Many wondered if she had quit the series, but Prue insisted it was not the case. During an appearance on ITV's Lorraine, she told viewers that she only stopped appearing the celebrity version because she needed a break, explaining: "I keep being asked if I'm leaving. "This is because I left the celebrity [version]. I stopped doing that last year because I just hadn't had a holiday in the summer for eight years. I've only given up Celebrity [Bake Off]." She said: "I still do The Great American Bake Off, which we are filming at the moment, and I still do The Great British Bake Off, which I love, and is the mother of them all." Prue has no intention of leaving the regular version of the programme, adding: "It's the best job in telly. It's absolutely the best job in telly, I don't have to learn lines, I don't have to have script. I just walk on and eat cake."

Gwyrch Castle announces plan to welcome back opera star Russell Watson
Gwrych Castle is hoping to amend its premises licence as it bids to welcome back a world-renowned opera singer. Bosses at the famous castle in Abergele want to welcome famous tenor Russell Watson for a special classical concert at the Grade I listed venue. The variation of the conditions of the castle's licence is currently under review by Conwy County Borough Council. Russell Watson was one of the stars of ITV's 2020 series of I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! The show was famously based at the castle for two consecutive years during the Covid-19 pandemic. Russell spent 18 days in the camp experiencing everything from being dunked in batter to keeping the other camp members entertained with his vocal talents. The changes, if accepted, would allow the castle to host up to four large-scale daytime events per year, with attendance exceeding 500 guests. Speaking about the possibility of returning to Gwrych Castle, Russell Watson said: 'Gwrych Castle holds a very special place in my heart after filming I'm A Celebrity there. "The thought of returning to perform in such a spectacular setting would be incredible. "I'd love to be part of bringing live music and culture to this iconic place once again.' Russell is a multi-platinum selling classical singer who rose to fame in 2001 with his debut album The Voice. Gwrych Castle says it has a strong track record of hosting inclusive, well-managed events that support heritage, community engagement, and the local economy. 'Whether it's classical concerts or Cliff Richard, being able to host just four large-scale events a year would be a huge cultural and economic boost for the region,' a castle spokesperson said. The bid calls for a premises variation, which would see the "provision of live music indoors/outdoors on Saturdays and Sundays 10pm – 1am and provision of recorded music indoors/outdoors Saturday and Sunday 10am – 1am". It also includes "provision of anything of a similar description to live music, recorded music or performance of dance indoors/outdoors, Saturday and Sunday 10am – 1am". There would also be no more than four daytime musical events per calendar year with a capacity for over 500 people. The closing date for public representations is Friday, August 28.
