Biggest storylines for the Panthers' 2025 mandatory minicamp
The Carolina Panthers are now set to begin mandatory minicamp, the final stage in Phase Three of the NFL's offseason workout program.
So, what should we expect?
Well, just like the voluntary organized team activities that took place the last few weeks, mandatory minicamp will include relatively light installments of practice. There will be no pads, except for the pedestrian elbow and knee gear, and no live contact.
But that doesn't mean there won't be anything interesting to keep an eye on.
Here are the four biggest storylines for the Panthers' three-day mandatory minicamp:
Cali Connection
Once again, rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan will be a key focus for another string of offseason practices. (Hey, it comes with the territory of being a top-10 pick.)
The eighth overall selection left an impression in both rookie minicamp and in OTAs, impressing coaches with his natural hands and smooth movement. Can McMillan keep that "Cali Connection" with quarterback Bryce Young going and continue to establish himself as a primary target in this growing offense?
The Jimmy
McMillan hasn't been the only Panthers rookie receiver to turn heads thus far. Speedy sixth-round pick Jimmy Horn Jr. has already garnered quite the amount of fanfare, perhaps even more than his first-round compadre has.
He did, however, miss the end of OTAs due to a hamstring injury—which head coach Dave Canales didn't seem too worried about. Will Horn be able to return to the practice field and keep his hype train moving?
Next tight end up
Starting tight end Tommy Tremble certainly won't be returning to the field yet, as the fifth-year veteran is still on the mend from back surgery. In fact, we many not even see Tremble until the preseason kicks in.
His absence could open the door for a couple of youngsters at the position—2024 fourth-rounder Ja'Tavion Sanders and 2025 fifth-rounder Mitchell Evans. Can Sanders and/or Evans take advantage of their expanded opportunities in Tremble's absence?
Kickin' it
The kicking competition between veteran journeyman Matthew Wright and undrafted rookie Ryan Fitzgerald isn't too hot yet, at least according to special teams coordinator Tracy Smith. Expect that battle to heat up more towards the summer.
But can Wright or Fitzgerald make a statement in the coming days and give Carolina a favorite ahead of training camp?

Panthers CB Jaycee Horn says this WR has been 'impossible to guard' in training camp
"He's been impossible to guard..." 🤯Pro Bowl CB Jaycee Horn says Hunter Renfrow is making plays out of the slot — and that Jimmy Horn Jr.'s "game-changing speed" has stood out ⚡️@heykayadams | @jayceehorn_10 | @Panthers #KeepPounding The comeback story of Carolina Panthers wideout Hunter Renfrow just keeps getting better and better. Following this morning's outing at training camp, cornerback Jaycee Horn joined the set for Friday's episode of Up & Adams. When asked by host Kay Adams about the team's receivers, the Pro Bowl defender had quite the praise for a few guys—including Renfrow . . . Renfrow, who missed the entire 2024 campaign due to ulcerative colitis, signed a one-year deal with the Panthers this past spring. Since then, the 29-year-old veteran has impressed many members of the organization, including head coach Dave Canales and quarterback Bryce Young. Canales highlighted Renfrow's performance following last Saturday's practice. "It's just the Hunter Renfrow I remember," Canales told reporters. "He looks healthy. I think everyone who's watched football over the last four or five years remembers what he looks like, and he's really playing in top form right now. I'm really excited to have him here and to have his family, which is right down the road here after this practice, just to be able to connect with him. And it's a great story that's unfolding right before our eyes." Despite being in a pretty crowded wide receiver room, Renfrow has defied the odds and made himself an early favorite for Carolina's initial 53-man roster. And if that's the case, then Horn won't have to worry about guarding him in the reps that actually count. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Panthers QB Bryce Young struggles on Friday, as 'dominant' defense racks up sacks and INTs
Quarterback Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers offense have looked pretty smooth throughout the first week of training camp. But they won't be able to win every session. That was true this morning, when the defense pushed back following a particularly fine performance by Young and company from their previous outing on Wednesday. In fact, head coach Dave Canales began his post-practice by commending the unit for their strong effort. "Defense—great response today. A dominant practice for the defense," Canales stated. "Some turnovers, some beautiful hits. Guys squaring the offensive guys up, showing each other the type of physical play that they're expecting each other—which I love. I love that it's coming from them. "It's [Tre'von] Moehrig, it's Lathan Ransom showing up. Thomas Incoom had a great day today. Pat Jones had some nice rushes. I can go on and on, but it was just a lot of physical play. Trevin [Wallace] had a nice hit out there. "And that's what we need. The offense needs to be able to be prepared for that kind of physical nature of the game. So, I love the finish of the practice." The finish of practice saw second-year cornerback Chau Smith-Wade pick off Young on a pass intended for 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan. Young experienced the same fate earlier in 11-on-11 drills, courtesy of interceptions by Pro Bowl corner Jaycee Horn and veteran safety Nick Scott. He was also "sacked" a number of times, with defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton controlling the trenches and leading the charge. Incoom, a third-year outside linebacker, notched a couple of takedowns as well. So, yeah, Friday was undoubtedly a much-needed step in right direction for the Carolina defense—which allowed the most points in NFL history (534) this past season. Panthers HC Dave Canales reveals preseason plan for QB Bryce Young, starters
The Carolina Panthers will seemingly give us a better preview of their first-string squads this preseason. Head coach Dave Canales chatted with Kay Adams, host of Up & Adams, from the site of the team's training camp on Friday. Adams, when talking about the growing connection between quarterback Bryce Young and 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan, asked Canales if we'll get to see the starters during upcoming exhibition play. "Absolutely," he replied. "My plan is to play a series or two with the starters for the first two preseason games. So, I'm excited to get them out there. It goes beyond just the reps in the game. It's the night before, it's the morning of, it's what you eat, it's how you mentally prepare, it's going through your process of body readiness going into the game. Those are valuable reps—as much as going out there actually playing the game. "So, I'm excited to kinda throw that at the guys—especially some of the younger players, the rookies and all that. But certainly our starters, just playing together and feeling what that feels like to prep from the night before all the way going up to it." That was not the case last summer, when Canales opted to hold much of his starters out from the first two preseason outings. The first-year head coach was questioned for that decision, especially after the Panthers were thoroughly thrashed in their regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Canales did roll out the first-team offense in their 2024 preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. The brief outing saw Young complete six of his eight passes for 70 yards and a touchdown during an efficient 12-play scoring drive. The Panthers will open up preseason play next Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET, when they host the Cleveland Browns from Bank of America Stadium. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
