MUSCAT: Trade between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Canada amounted to $8.5 billion in 2023, according to recent data published by the GCC Statistical Center.
This figure represents 14.1 per cent decline in trade in 2023 in comparison with 2022's total of $9.9 billion.
Most notably, GCC exports to Canada decreased by 32.2 per cent ($1.5 billion) to $3.2 billion in 2023, versus $4.7 billion in the previous year.

Despite the decline in the trade volume, Canada moves up a rank to become the 32nd trade partner of the GCC in 2023.
Earlier in January, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed al Budaiwi, received the Canadian Minister of International Development at the General Secretariat's headquarters in Riyadh to discuss bilateral relations between the GCC and Canada, in addition to ways to enhance cooperation in various aspects.

Oman's labour law: Strengthening worker protections and ensuring workplace justice

In an era where employee rights are often under strain, Oman has emerged as a regional leader by enacting a robust and progressive labour law framework introduced under Royal Decree 53/2023. Designed to ensure dignity, fairness, and accountability in the workplace, the law reflects a national commitment to protecting the interests of both employees and employers. Speaking exclusively to the Times of Oman, a representative of Mohammed Ibrahim Law Firm, a leading law office in Oman, explained that 'workplaces where employees are protected from unfair treatment, discrimination and unsafe conditions are not merely an ideal but a legal mandate.' Oman's Labour law embodies this vision, establishing clear safeguards to ensure that workers' rights are prioritized. Far from being punitive, the law reflects Oman's Labour Law commitment to nurturing equitable and respectful workplaces. It provides clear legal protection against discrimination and unjust dismissal including termination on the grounds of gender, religion, pregnancy or union activity. The law also underscores the importance of work-life balance. It limits standard working hours to eight per day and reduces them to six hours during Ramadan for Muslim employees, in recognition of their religious observance. Additionally, it guarantees rest breaks and mandates fair compensation for overtime work. Furthermore, the law empowers employees to file complaints without fear of retaliation and prohibits employers from withholding workers' documents,' said Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Zadjali, Founding Partner of Mohammed Ibrahim Law Firm. He added, 'The law further reinforces employee protections by mandating effective grievance mechanisms, prohibiting forced or compulsory labour, and regulating disciplinary procedures to prevent arbitrary dismissal. These legal provisions embody a balanced approach that safeguards both employer accountability and workers' rights.' 'By balancing employer responsibilities with employee rights, Oman's Labour Law doesn't just regulate it elevates workplace standards. In a world where fairness often falters, Oman's approach sets a benchmark worth celebrating,' the expert said.

Oman plans unified EV charging app, invites public to name it

Muscat – To accelerate green mobility ambitions, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched a nationwide community survey to choose a name for Oman's first unified national electric vehicle (EV) charging application. Currently under development, the platform will serve as the central access point for all EV charging stations in the sultanate, integrating services offered by various operators under one digital umbrella. Supervised by MTCIT, the application aims to streamline access for EV users, offering a seamless charging experience across Oman and, in the future, expanding to cover Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The ministry has invited the public to participate in an online survey to select the app's name from a shortlist or suggest alternatives. The shortlisted names include EVNet OM – a technical name highlighting a unified national EV network, NEVO – short for National Electric Vehicles Oman, EV-Go OM – a marketing-friendly option suggesting readiness and movement, ECO – representing both environmental focus and electric charging, and EV Connect OM – emphasising the user-station connectivity within a single network. Participants are also asked to indicate whether they currently own an EV, plan to purchase one or are simply contributing to the national conversation. The survey reflects Oman's inclusive approach to sustainable transformation, inviting citizens to shape what the ministry called a 'pioneering national identity' in the green transport sector. The survey period ends on August 9. This initiative is in line with MTCIT's broader strategy to achieve zero carbon neutrality in the transport sector. In January, the ministry announced that by the end of 2024 Oman had introduced 25 initiatives and pilot programmes focused on legislation, governance and infrastructure development for sustainable mobility. These include the use of biofuel in public transport, installation of over 150 EV chargers nationwide and registration of more than 1,500 EVs. Trials for hydrogen-powered vehicles are also underway. Looking ahead, the ministry aims to operationalise the unified EV charging platform this year. Future goals include replacing government vehicles with electric models and establishing dedicated green lanes for hydrogen trucks. MTCIT has called on the public to share the survey widely and support Oman's transition to a greener transport ecosystem. 'Your feedback matters to us,' the ministry noted in its statement. 'Be a partner in the green transformation journey towards a shared Gulf future.'
